Beyond the power of the Spirit in new birth Luke 10:20 (ESV) “Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Beyond the power of the Spirit in sanctification Spirit baptism is not a gradual work or Jesus would not have described the experience as He did, using phrases like ‘clothed with power’ and ‘Holy Spirit has come upon you’
For the completion of the Great Commission Jesus said they would receive power to BE his witnesses “to the end of the earth” The word for power means “ability, efficiency, and might”
Is for today since reaching the nations is not yet finished 7,400 people groups are still considered unreached
Many were amazed Acts 2:12 (ESV) “And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’”
Others mocked Acts 2:13 (ESV) “But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Receiving Power
“I cannot describe it; I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to name. I can only say that…I had such an experience that I had to ask him [God] to stay his hand. I went to preaching again. The sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back where I was D.L. Moody before that blessed experience if you American Evangelist should give me all the world.”
Give your life to Christ Acts 2:38 (ESV) “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Believe that it’s for you Acts 2:39 (ESV) “For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Ask God to baptize you Luke 11:13 (ESV) “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Be open to God’s timing & place In Acts 2 it happened in a prayer group In Acts 10 it happened in the midst of a sermon In Acts 19 it took place through the laying on of hands
