3

What is the biggest problem you face in getting people involved in parish life?

slide-4
SLIDE 4

4

What’s the problem?

  • List of reliable helpers is getting low
  • Hard to get young people involved
  • Difficulty with people making a commitment
  • People don’t follow through on commitment
  • No one wants to do what you want them to do
slide-5
SLIDE 5

5

Why people don’t get involved

  • They don’t like the way they were asked.
  • They don’t think they can do it.
  • They don’t see themselves fitting in.
  • They don’t have enough time.
  • They don’t like what they see.
slide-6
SLIDE 6

6

Other things that stifle involvement in a parish

  • Negative attitudes & gossip
  • Cliques
  • Control
  • Refusal to change
  • Lack of training & support
  • A long history of non-involvement
slide-7
SLIDE 7

7

Do you really want people to get involved?

slide-8
SLIDE 8

8

Everyone is born with a bundle!

Inside the bundle are God-given gifts. How we use those gifts gives meaning and purpose to our lives.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

9

We can use what’s in our bundle…

  • To make the world a better place.
  • To exploit others and make the world a crueler

place.

  • Or we can take our gifts for granted and drift
  • along without any awareness of the spiritual

meaning or purpose in our lives.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

10

We will be held accountable for how we use our own gifts and how we help others recognize and use their gifts.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

11

Think about your parish…

  • What is the vision of your parish?
  • Who makes the decisions?
  • Is the parish spiritually vertical, horizontal or

both?

  • Are you sure you have agreement about

getting more people involved?

slide-12
SLIDE 12

12

Why We Do What We Do…

  • Internal versus External motivation
  • Compliance leads to defiance
  • Creating conditions where people will

motivate themselves

  • Encouraging experimentation, new ideas, and

self-initiation.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

13

One size does not fit all…

When you’re trying to get people involved you have to remember that people have different gifts, different skills, and different styles of doing things.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

14

  • Gifts are in-born traits and talents that are unique

to you.

  • Gifts cannot be acquired. They are things that you

do instinctively.

  • When you use your God-given gifts you feel a sense
  • f purpose and meaning in life.
slide-15
SLIDE 15

15

 Skills are abilities that can be acquired through study, practice & hard work.  You can learn a skill but you won’t excel at it unless it enhances a God-given talent.  When you develop skills based on your God-given talents, you feel a sense of accomplishment.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

16

  • Styles are how you prefer to use your gifts and

talents.

  • When you operate within your style you are in your

comfort zone.

  • When you’re outside your style, you may feel

tension or frustration.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

17

Four Distinct Styles

  • 1. How does this relate to me?
  • 2. What are the facts?
  • 3. How can I do this?
  • 4. What if we took this to the next level?

Define what needs to be done

Make sure people understand exactly what they are expected to do. Be clear about how much time it will take. Be clear about how long the person will be involved. Provide the help they need to be successful.

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.”
