What makes a great Parish? “A great parish has inclusiveness and different kinds of people, and lives out what Jesus prayed, ‘That they may be one.’ Parishioners have a sense of being together, not like being at separate tables in a restaurant, or being anonymous people at a theatre, but people who smile and are

  • together. Parish histories can never tell the greatness of the people who cared, who believed in

God, who welcomed, who included people, who went out to people in need – in need of some-

  • ne to talk to or in need of money or in need of food – and helped them.” Excerpt from

www.pepparish.org Heartfelt Thanks! At Holy Spirit Parish, we are blessed to have an amazing group of dedicated volunteers who serve the parish community tirelessly. It is because of this group of people that we all get to enjoy a clean church, safe grounds and a wonderful worship experience. With most people back from holidays now, we would like to take this op- portunity to thank everyone who so generously contributed their time and talent to preparing the church/liturgy and helping us all in

  • ur worship of God during our Advent and Christmas period. We

thank our musicians, singers, cleaners, the grounds maintenance group, the counters and everyone who helped set up the Church for our large Masses that touch so many lives in ways that we will never know. Thank you to all who responded to the invitation to share their gifts in the many and varied Ministries and a thank you to everyone who came along and helped to ‘pack up’ everything and put the church back to ‘normal’. We would like to extend a special thank you to Fiona Wilkinson, Mike Whyte, Dennis Algie, Nell Davis, George Burke, Alison Weeks who led groups of people and put extra effort to en- sure everything would run smoothly! We are blessed to have each and every one of you as part of our parish. Your help is invaluable very much appreciated. Participate in Church life and join a ministry As we settle into the new year, this is the opportunity to think and pray about ways you might be able to use your gifts and talents in the parish. Prayerful and personal reflection is the first step towards choosing a ministry. It is only through a relationship with Jesus, a relationship that

  • ne seeks to deepen over time, that our acts of love and service will flow from the love of God

through the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in an area of Parish Ministry. All who be- long to the Church carry on the ministry of Christ by their service to others, their witness to their faith and their active participation in worship and ministry. The Call to Ministry form can be found in the pamphlet rack in the Church foyer. Please have a read and once completed, place in the red box in the foyer. Alternatively, please contact the parish office—

Today’s readings

Readings: Malachi 3:1-4, Hebrews 2:14-18, Luke 2:22-40 Entrance Antiphon: Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your

  • temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right

hand is filled with saving justice. Responsorial Psalm: Who is this King of glory? It is the Lord! Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! This is the light of revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. Alleluia! Communion Antiphon: My eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples. Liturgy Help DOORKNOCK – UPDATE The St Vincent de Paul have announced that their February Doorknock Appeal has had to be severely curtailed because smoke in the air is not safe for volunteers. This decision was made on the advice of the ACT government and the Bureau

  • f Meteorology.

Instead of a doorknock, Vinnies will be conducting collections within shopping centres over the five weekends

  • f February. We are aiming to have collection tables in both major supermarket

buildings in Gungahlin so we will still need our volunteers to put in two hours at the desk. Now that we can’t go knocking on doors it is even more important that we have as much help as possible in the shopping centres. Please email Anne Cantlie

  • n: vinniesannecantlie@gmail.com or phone 0404 319 138.

A Sword Simeon’s second pronouncement about Jesus is addressed to the child’s mother,

  • Mary. Having predicted the rejection that Jesus will endure, Simeon tells Mary, ‘and

a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ He appears to be referring to the sacrifice that Mary will have to make in the future. On this day, Mary and Joseph have ‘redeemed’ their son from service to the Lord in the Temple. Despite this, Jesus is still destined for service to God and Mary will have to surrender him back to the

  • Lord. Simeon suggests that Mary herself will be a sacrifice offered to God at this

time.

Saints Of The Week -5 February

  • St. Agatha has been honoured since ancient times, although very little

is known about her other than legend. Early tradition describes her as a young, wealthy virgin who was devoted to Christ. During times when Christians were persecuted, she refused the advances of the consul Quintinian, who threatened to have her charged. Agatha held firm to her beliefs and was subsequently tortured and martyred. In the early church, St Agatha was invoked against fire, particularly the volcanic eruptions of Mt Etna. She is also a patron against breast cancer.

Ways to Pray … For Those Days When You Need A Place to Start!  Listen to Christian music. Let the lyrics lead you in prayer  Set an alarm to remind you to pray every day at 3pm. This is the Hour of

  • Mercy. “Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of

Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.”  Choose to fast from something (music, food, technology) for the day  Sit outside and adore the beauty of God’s Creation

A Pause for thought

Reflecting on God’s Promises As Christians, we are a Resurrection people. We live each day in the joy of Christ’s victory over death. We know that life and love always win, but sometimes it is easy for this to move from the forefront of our minds. Our world is filled with systems of oppression and injustice. Poverty is prevalent and violence seems unending. Kindness often falls to selfishness, and trust fades to disbelief. But this is not the end. Today’s Gospel reminds us that we wait for something more. Like Simeon and Anna, we long to see the fullness of the reign of God here on earth. We ache for the peace that God alone can bring. We yearn for the Light that will vanish all

  • darkness. We wait, trusting God’s promise to be with us
  • always. Will we try to live as Christ now, we wait for the day

when we will live in the joy of the Resurrection, because the Kingdom is both here and not yet. We wait for the day when we, like Simeon and Anna, will know the salvation of God that has been promised to us.
