  4. 02 Hinkley Connection Project We are connecting people to low carbon energy. We're building an electricity connection: pylons, cables and substations between Hinkley Point and Seabank power stations. It will also mean we have more capacity on our network for renewable energy from the South West peninsular. National Grid 4

  5. Project overview • 57 kilometres length - 48.5 km of overhead line - 8.5 km of underground cable through the Mendip Hills AONB - Mostly T-pylon - Two substations • Removing 67 kilometres of WPD pylons National Grid 5

  6. Timeline National Grid 6

  7. Building T- Pylons Balfour Beatty has been appointed to build the overhead line between Bridgwater and Loxton • We’ve carried out surveys and preparations over the past 12 months • Main construction of T-pylons starts in May 2020 and expected to be complete in 2022 • First activities will be building road access and temporary haul road National Grid 7

  8. Removing overhead lines When the substation we’re building at Sandford is operational and supplying power to WPD’s network, we’ll remove WPD’s pylons from Bridgwater to Sandford • Pylons will be dismantled and removed • Expected completion by 2025 • Balfour Beatty will carry out this work Pic of WPD pylon National Grid 8

  9. Working safely during the lockdown We take our responsibilities to our employees and local communities very seriously. We’ve introduced stringent site operating procedures to safeguard everyone, including : • Significantly reduced workforce • Detailed risk assessments and daily staff briefings • Social distancing on all sites • Increased handwashing facilities and welfare cabins • Restricted travel between sites National Grid 9

  10. 03 In your area - East Huntspill Our work in the parish includes: • Building two road accesses – one at Factory Lane and one at Causeway • Changing the parking arrangements on Church Road • Building a haul road crossing on Burtle Road • Building temporary haul road • Building T-pylons • Removing WPD pylons We recognise these works will cause delays and disruption and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused National Grid 10

  11. Reducing construction traffic We’re exploring opportunities to reduce the amount of construction traffic on local roads • Building the haul road allows us to move traffic directly off main roads – limiting use of local roads • Traffic will be routed to and from M5 (junction 22) via A38, B3139 Mark Road and B3141 Church Road • We’re working with This is Gravity and others on whether we can use the new link road that’s due for completion in 2021 • We’re working with our contractors to reduce the amount of stone used to install temporary construction roads • All construction vehicles are clearly identified with project stickers/signage • Safety is our priority and all our drivers will be fully briefed on how to access and leave sites safely National Grid 11

  12. Church Road – restricting parking We need to restrict parking near the entrance to Factory Lane to allow our vehicles to turn safely and to reduce traffic queuing on Bason Bridge • We need to extend the ‘no parking’ area with double yellow lines • We’re creating four parking bays • We’ll use traffic lights and ‘stop/go’ boards to manage traffic while we are working to keep our staff and drivers safe • We’re starting work on Church Road on 15 June and we need to complete this before starting on Factory Lane • When we have finished all work in the area, the yellow lines will be removed and parking on the road returned to its original status National Grid 12

  13. Factory Lane We need to access T- pylon construction areas and remove WPD’s pylons • We’ll repaint yellow lines to prevent vehicles waiting along the north boundary of the lane • As the lane is narrow, we need to build passing places and control vehicle movements • We’re creating a vehicle holding area, installing beacons to control traffic flow and we’ll have a 5mph limit for our vehicles • To safeguard residents of Riverview Farm, we’ve applied to build a diversion, and we’ll install gates and have banksmen to see vehicles through safely National Grid 13

  14. Causeway We’re building a temporary road access and haul road • Work on Causeway will start on 29 June for five weeks • We’ll need to close one side of the road and will manage traffic with traffic lights • We’ll put up notice signs to let drivers know in advance • When we have finished all work in the area, we will remove the access and haul road National Grid 14

  15. Burtle Road We’re building temporary accesses where the haul road crosses the road • Work is scheduled to start on 1 August 2020 for six weeks • Will need to close the road and divert traffic • We’ll put up notice signs to let drivers know in advance • We’ll write to local residents with more information and publish the diversion route on our website • When we have finished all work in the area, we will remove the access and haul road National Grid 15

  16. Questions

  17. 05 Our approach - We want to be a good neighbour Creating opportunities to talk and meet with residents and businesses. Before construction begins in each area, we’re: • Providing updated project briefings to parish councils – via digital media • Writing to residents and businesses with updates • Promoting our 24/7 community helpline • We’ve had to postpone public information events during the lockdown but we will rearrange these as soon as we can National Grid 17
