Resources

Objective

  • Better prepare VCU Globe students to enter into the

Henrico County Adult Education community site

  • We want future Globe students to know the expectations

for the community site, as well as help them obtain the vital communication skills needed to interact with the adult learners

Methods

  • Three phases through which this training program will be conducted
  • The first phase involves providing the volunteers with printed

guidelines on the code of conduct to be followed at the community site

  • The second phase is a detailed PowerPoint presentation explaining

these guidelines to the next Globe cohort entering the community site

  • The third and final phase is a role-playing activity in order to help the

cohort get a feel of what it will be like when they actually go to their community site

  • Provide example

Role-Playing Activity

  • Set the room up similar to how the rooms are set up at the Adult

Henrico Education Center

  • Have previous Henrico volunteers act as the adult English learners
  • Have the new Globe students act as the volunteers
  • The previous Henrico volunteers would supervise this activity
  • Old and new volunteers will pair up with one another and go through

simulation activities

  • Simulation activities such as writing prompts and reading exercises

Evaluation

  • The project goals will be evaluated through a set of before and after

surveys for both Globe students and the adult learners

  • Globe students will be administered a survey sometime before the

workshop to see how comfortable they are volunteering at the community site and one immediately after to see if their level of comfort and performance have changed after the training workshop

  • Section on the survey to see if there can be any other improvements

made to the workshop so that it will be more successful in future years to come

Budget

  • Due to the nature of this project a budget may or may not be necessary
  • Since the goal of this project is to create a helpful workshop for VCU Globe

students at most we will need access to a printer and paper as well as space in

  • ne of the Globe classrooms
  • In addition we will also require activity materials which include dry erase

markers which will cost approximately $5

  • Also we will provide handouts for the students which can be printed out at a

low cost, which will be identified at a later date when we receive an estimate

  • f the amount of students that are expected to attend
  • If it is possible, we may inquire about receiving ESL guides which should be at

a low cost as well and will be bought through our site supervisor
