Presidents Report 2016/2017

Well that was another big year for Heatherhill with a hell of a lot happening … so where do I start? Firstly a massive congratulations to David Martin and his victorious 2nds team on winning “Back To Back” District 2nds Premierships. It was a weird season for the 2nds who only lost 2 games in the Home and Away games however finished the year in 3rd position. Having a gutsy win in the Semi Final set them up for a big Grand Final and the Premiership was already in the bag just after tea on the 1st day! Congratulations guys and let’s hope a few of you step up into the 1sts next season and help them have a big year. Well done also to Dougie and Dermott who as first year Captains steered our 3rds and 4ths into Grand

• Finals. Unfortunately we came up short in both games however, the Club is rapt that a winning culture

is now instilled amongst our grades and a hunger to do one better next year I’m sure will spur the boys

• nto a successful year in 2017-18.

With Nathan going down in the pre-season and unable to play this season Kristian Miller put his hand up to take on the Captaincy of the 1sts and in a tough year he did his very best to help get the boys into the finals however, we finished like last year one win outside of the four. Thanks for all your efforts Grizz and good luck in your Summer of Cricket in England. Andrew Brown put his hand up to Captain the 5ths this year which contained a lot of Highs and Lows throughout the season. Inconsistency was the issue and while there were some fantastic wins there were also some heavy losses. A bit more strength with the bat will help improve them next year and we thank Browny for his efforts this year as skipper. With many of the Junior Parents talking about the possibilities of playing a game of cricket with their boys, we as a Club decided that we should really look into having another Senior team which contained predominantly Father and Son combinations. After a meeting with interested parents and members

• f the Committee discussing the way it would have to work and the possible problems that could arise

throughout the year, it was agreed that we would field a 6th team. I approached Reggie Crew and Bob Skelly to take ownership of this team and these guys were absolutely sensational in making sure that there were 11 players each week in the team and that everyone involved had an enjoyable game. With great momentum towards the end of the season the guys were able to secure 4th spot on the ladder and played Langwarrin who themselves have an established Father-Sons team which has been in operation for a few seasons. Our guys took it right up to Langy and unfortunately not enough runs on the board cost us in the end. Well done to all involved in this team and we are sure to keep it going next season! To Club Coach Jason Wylie, I thank you for your efforts in your 1st year as a Senior Coach. We knew at the start of the season that Jase would have a slightly interrupted season with his Wedding and Honeymoon however, a burst appendix the week before Round One wasn’t in the plan! When going to print we are unsure whether Jase will be able to take on the role next year due to a possible re- location with his wife so if it is goodbye we wish you all the best and thank you for all of your efforts this year. Also a job well done to Mark “Rocky” Rothwell who again put in another terrific year as Chairman of

• Selectors. Four teams out of six playing finals is a pretty good result although it’s not good enough for

Rocky unless we win everything! Maybe next year is the year we can have that perfect year mate!

Presentation Night Season 2016/2017 Presidents Report, Captains Reports, Awards, Aggregates and Averages Our Junior Club took a bit of a hit this year with us unable to field an Under 12 team which was

• disappointing. Hopefully some of these boys will come back and play in our Under 14’s next year and

we can continue to have a team in each age group. Our Under 16’s also had issues with numbers before the season started and it was decided we would merge our team with Ballam Park. In the end it was great for all of these kids to get a game of cricket every weekend. With numbers improving in Milo Cricket and the Under 10’s this year, the Juniors will have another strong crop coming through in the next few years. Well done to our Under 14’s who made the Finals and just went down to a strong POB outfit in the

• Semi. A great year by these boys and there are a few very handy cricketers amongst this team who

will be Heatherhill Stars in the future! This year was also the inaugural season of the Under 18 Twenty/20 Comp (The Norm Jardine Shield) in which our boys (including some of our past juniors who are playing in higher competitions) got through to the Final against Mornington. We had a good crack but were eventually Runners Up. A great effort guys! A Special thanks must go to all of the Junior Coaches, Team Managers, Scorers, Umpires and Parents for helping get our kids on the park every week and massive thanks goes to Craig Quelch for working very hard making sure that all the junior teams are functioning well and continuing to improve. Also thanks a lot to our Junior Committee who continue to make sure that the Juniors are well looked after and that their fundraising will continue to help make sure that our kids have the best facilities to utilize and help keep our Subs at a low cost. Off the field we FINALLY got our Scoreboard and Gear Shed completed! Norm Jardine was instrumental in organising all parties to make sure that all went to plan and that we would have a state

• f the art Digital Scoreboard that is most impressive with a huge amount of features. Great stuff

Stormin! Every Thursday night without fail from around 7pm we start getting that waft of Snags and Burgers cooking on the BBQ coming across Bruce Park and as we look up at the rooms there are two magnificent Club People who donate their time to come down and feed us and have a good chat. What makes this all remarkable is that their own boys are training elsewhere at a Premier Club and they would be well within their rights to be cooking the BBQ out at Casey Fields. Mandy and Adrian you are both “true Heatherhill people” and we all thank you for the amount of effort and time you both put in to keep us happy on a Thursday night. Our Social Functions this year were a bit hit and miss with some being supported brilliantly however some were a bit light on for numbers. A new function we tried this year was “Day at the Dogs” where about 25 of us got a bus to Sandown on a Sunday and enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon watching the dish lickers and trying to win a few dollars for the club. Make sure you pencil that one in for next year if you didn’t go to the last one! Also we held a $5000 Draw on the last night of the season which was most successful for both the club and to all those attended I’m sure they all agree it was a terrific night and organised well by Zach “#bigfella” Horsley. Good job mate! Next Season we will be holding a massive Past Players function to celebrate the Reunions of our 1sts Premierships of 10 and 30 years ago. We will also be announcing our Team of the Decade from 2007-

• 2017. It will be one of the biggest nights the Club has seen in a long time so keep an eye out for more

details when we announce specifics next season. All in all Heatherhill as a Club has continued to improve with better on field results this year and off field we are in an even stronger position than this time last year. To get us to where we are today involves a lot of people helping to organise everything from keeping the rooms clean, to manning the bar, working at Bunnings Sausage Sizzles, attending MPCA meetings, attending Council meetings,

• rganizing functions, organizing club apparel, banking the money, sorting out correspondence,

replying to emails, ordering drinks and food and attending 12 Committee meetings throughout the

• year. These are just a few jobs that members of our committee do behind the scenes to make sure

that we get all players on the park each week and to keep Heatherhill as a strong brand amongst the MPCA. When you do get a chance please say thanks to Bob Skelly, Norm Jardine, Brian Westhorp, David Martin, Trevor Hinde, Brett Upton, Reggie Crew, Matt Bishop, Zach Horsley, Kristian Miller, Jono Powell, Jake Theobald and Dougie Logan-Palser for all their efforts on the Committee this year. CAPTAINS REPORTS: SEASON 2016/17

District First XI

This season for me was by far the one I was most excited about. My first season as a coach of a cricket club, but not just any cricket club, the club where my first cricket memories were formed. My junior

• club. The Heatherhill Cricket Club. I have toiled hard at my cricket skills and cricket knowledge for a

very long time and I was proud to be recognised and appointed as the clubs coach for this season. I believe pre-season was excellent. We had large numbers attending quality and intense training sessions and hard fought hit outs against good opposition. We were set to take on this season in the best shape possible. Unfortunately, a few early hiccups side-tracked our planned great start. An appendix operation and a loss to Baden Powell did not start the first week off on a high note. A round 2 wash out when an easy win was well on the cards again hindered where we wanted to be. Round 3 saw the boys get the ball rolling with a big outright win. From there we had what I think was only highlights of the capabilities of our First XI. We often put into place excellent sessions or days of cricket and only on one occasion, I think, we can say that we pieced together a full match of consistently good cricket to our standard. The away fixture against Mt. Martha was outstanding. A focused group was present who all knew the importance of a must win contest. The vibe and attitudes were intense and suited that of a First XI who were ready to step up and play finals. We played 2 days of excellent cricket with a number of contributors. The support from each player and for each player was strong and we thought that this was the beginnings

• f our run to finally playing finals cricket again.

Unfortunately, this did not continue across our remaining games. Again, we showed glimpses of our capabilities but these were few and far between. Our season ended with a gut wrenching second last

• ver loss to Flinders. The boys were shattered to say the least and a long post game discussion

highlighted a number of areas that needed attention in order for us to be what we are capable of: a consistent cricket side that plays finals cricket. I believe that this is obtainable next season and that we, as a club, should approach season 2017/18 as an excited and eager playing group. A massive congratulations to the seconds and their premiership! What an amazing effort to go back to back. What you guys have achieved this season is something I still yearn for: a premiership. I also congratulate our grand finalists: the thirds and fourths. A great season which only just missed ultimate

• success. Finally, well done to the sixths on making finals and giving it your best. 4 out of 6 teams in

finals is an amazing effort and one we as a club are very proud of. I'd like to thank SOS and Rocky for their honesty and support throughout this season. I'd also like to thank Kristian for his excellent efforts as First XI captain, I hope he learnt more about his leadership and his cricket knowledge throughout the season. Thanks to Scabs, Derm and Feed for their support

• n the track and always lending a hand at training to ensure that things ran smoothly in my absence

and/or busyness. Thanks to Chipper, Pip, Kellz and Bish for their support and honesty on a Saturday in discussing tactics, game scenarios and approaches to all things cricket. It was a tough and challenging year for me, both

• n and off the field, but there is no doubting that I still love my cricket, playing cricket and the

District Second XI

This season was a successful one for the 2's winning 9 of our 11 home and away games before going

• n to win both the semi-final and then the grand final, a pleasing result, but would've been more

enjoyable if the 3rds & 4ths had of got up but not to be. Our batting this season was full of runs Tyler with 584 plus 30 dismissals capped off a terrific year, one which should see him test himself in the ones next year which I'm sure he'll handle if he puts the work in, Keiran with 410 and 18 wickets was excellent also, Jordan (288), Adam (309), Scoob (265), Bish (262) 6 games Hammer (231) and Declan (228) all made handy contributions at various times, with Bish's ton in the grand final the stand out, a magnificent knock. Our bowling was well led again by Diz (28 wkts) and Jim (26) ever consistent, and along with Keiran, Braedon (15) Declan (14) Jono (13) and Adam (12) these guys make my job as Captain so much easier with their disciplined bowling. Our fielding was steady all season but when it counted in the finals the efforts of Scoob, direct hit which got us going in the semi, Tyler's 8 catches & Bish's 3 slips catches in the Granny, all good efforts which can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing. To Norm for scoring again in finals thank you, to Westy and Chook and all the girls who helped with afternoon tea during the season its much appreciated to the big fella who did a sterling effort as 12th man in the finals and to the players who played cameos during the season you helped play apart in getting us to the ultimate

• success. So a successful season was had and finished with a well-deserved flag with a terrific bunch of

blokes, thanks for your efforts and hopefully the ones and the lower grades can take that next step and enjoy the ultimate success. Once again thanks to all concerned on a magnificent Team Effort!

Third XI

After a few disappointing seasons in A1 where we had only won 6 games in three seasons the decision was made to drop to A2 and it paid immediate dividends with 9 wins and only one loss during the home and away season. What makes this an even more amazing achievement is when you consider that our oldest player was 28, our youngest was just 16, and the average age of the side was about 22-23. Daniel Logan Palser did a stellar job leading a young side to the top of the table and into a grand final and at such a young age himself. Unfortunately the result of the grand final didn’t go our way but I’m sure we will be better for the experience and come out with something to prove next season. Daniel not only did a great job as skipper this season, he also performed superbly with the bat at the top of the order scoring 553 runs at an average of 42.54 and he finished nearly 100 runs clear of the second most productive bat in A2. Daniel scored four 50s during the season but it wasn’t until the semi-final where he notched his first and only ton for the season. His swashbuckling innings of 119 in the semi came off just 21 overs as we casually chased down Delacombe Park’s meagre total of 62 not long after tea on day 1. Tim Rigby joined the skipper at the top of the order and began the season in fine form with an impressive 98 runs in his first hit with the 3s for the season, he followed it up with knocks of 42 and 76 to go into the Christmas break with 216 runs from 3 hits. However, I’m sure Tim would be the first to tell you that his form wasn’t great after the break, although he was still able to finish with 270 runs at a respectable average of 33.75. While no one other than Daniel and Tim were able to score over 200 runs for the season, we did see 7 other batsmen raise the bat at least once this season and in only 3 games this season did we not see anyone top 50. After over a decade of playing elsewhere it was great to see Scott Cameron come to his senses and return to Heatherhill this season. And he certainly didn’t disappoint as he went on to pick up 27 wickets and three 5 wicket hauls at and an incredible average of 12.78. There were a number of notable performances throughout the season, obviously you can’t go past

• ur all-round team performance in the semi-final where Scott and Jonathon went wicket for wicket

and bowled unchanged throughout the innings, eventually picking up 5 wickets each and knocking

• ver Delacombe Park for 62. Then watching the skipper blasting a quick fire century, ensuring that we

didn’t have to come back the next day. Of course we also can’t forget the round 3 win vs Balnarring that set our season up. Bowled out for 130 and having Braeden Albert and Sean Cameron come back week 2 and bowling Balnarring out for

Braeden finished with 5/63 off 29 overs while Sean kept it tight at the other end ending the game with 2/22 off 18.1 (8 maidens). A special mention must go to Adam Salerni and Jonathon Powell who were very unlucky to be forced

• ut of the 2s for the finals. However they didn’t let it get them down and each came out and performed

admirably in the 3s during the finals series, Jonathon in particular who picked up 5 wickets in each final. While we may have lost the grand final I believe it is important to remember where we came from in previous seasons. For too long we have been under-performing in the 3s so it was really pleasing to see a young side rise to the top of the ladder and earn two home finals. Of course the result could have been completely different had a few decisions gone our way with the umpires. Ultimately though it was our batting that was the real killer. I’ve heard St Kilda coach Alan Richardson mention a couple

• f times after a loss that “you either lose or you learn” and that is certainly no less applicable here. If

we can learn from this experience then there is no reason why we can’t go one better next season. Overall it’s still a great season we can be proud of.

Fourth XI

By all standards, the 4ths had a very good season. Sure we didn't win the flag, but we finished atop of the ladder at seasons end and we progressed some very good younger players into a position whereby they are poised to play higher grade cricket next season. We only lost 2 games during the season, both to Langwarrin. But then we rolled them in the semi with a committed and spirited defence of our smallish total. The next week in the G.F. we were unable to chase down Mornington’s score. We found

• urselves in a position against them that was exactly the same as previously in the season. On that
• ccasion Shaun Miller destroyed their attack. G.F. day was a very different result for us.

A big thank you to Sos who captained during my absence with injury. A 100% winning record and his top score of 50+ was realized during his reign. As for the home and away season, our opener and stalwart Neil Flash Gordon worked through a lean start to the year to find some really good form, only to have a season ending injury on the eve of the finals. And that hurt our stability at the top of the

• rder.

Lachie Hinde bowled very well when he came back down to us. More than a 100 overs for the season saw him learn more about the caper every week. And to get his best figures in the G.F. was fantastic. Hopefully by next season as he gets older and stronger, he can climb up a couple of grades.

Before he went up a grade and never came back, Shaun Miller batted 9 times for us and was devastating. He finished as our top run scorer despite not being in our team for 5 matches. He also had a 5 wicket haul along the way. Liam Glennie continued to bowl deliveries that few in our grade knew much about. Consistency is his next

• step. And he is too good a bat to not be in the runs regularly. Liam Salisbury showed that he is a fighter

with the bat and very capable with the ball. Josh Gordon fronts up every game to take the new ball or first change and once every over he sends down a delivery that belongs in Provincial 1sts. And then when the opposition bowl into the slot to him, it is good night and adios. I was really proud of 14 y.o. Aiden Lenehan. In our 2 finals games, he made the most runs (aggregate). Others found it difficult, but Aiden made it difficult for the opposition to get him out. The 4ths is enjoyable cricket. We play because we like cricket and it is a great feeling when we realize an achievement. We banter and we sledge, but we do it with good humour and we take our own medicine when we have to. Although the medicine is always sweeter when you have the last laugh. Our aim is to win and to bring on young talent. And although we hold those values from now until

• retirement. We are never going to lose to Mornington ever again........... Derm'

Fifth XI

Can’t say too much about this season as we didn’t make finals as we hoped to. No excuses but at times we could only field four bats in the side and that makes it very hard to get runs to win games. Our fielding and bowling was equal to anyone in that grade and at times better than our opposition and to prove that point we defeated the top side during the year who ended up playing off in the grand

• final. Off field we could not have been better, us as a group all got on really well and had plenty of

laughs which is good. Raising money for us through fines (I think I contributed the most) was fabulous as well as having a beer after. I am not going to singularly thank anyone because this was a team effort from those who took to the field, to the people who filled in when we were short, to scoring, to handing out fines and coming to cheer us on. We are pretty close to making finals so all we need is a little more commitment to play each week and hopefully we can pick up a couple of bats next season and we will give the finals a shake. As this was my first season as skipper for well over ten years I can say it was a bit daunting at the start but as the year went on everyone who contributed to the side made it so easy for me. Thank you everyone I really enjoyed it (apart from losing) and hope to see you all next year, stay safe and remember #STAYHEATHERHILLSTRONG

Sixth XI

In 2016-17, our long awaited father/son side finally got off the ground. A total of ten father/son combinations from the Andrews, Avery, Baulch/Nottle, Dunn, Garth, Hackel, Mitchell, Quelch, Skelly and Whitnell families enjoyed many opportunities to play cricket together. Our season began with a miraculous win over Carrum Downs, a forfeit against Mt Martha and big win against Baden Powell. We were then put to the sword with heavy defeats at the hands of Mornington, Tyabb, Baxter and Langwarrin. After losing a winnable game against Carrum Downs, we notched up two fighting victories over Frankston YCW and Baden Powell before booking a finals berth in the last round with a stroll in the park against Mornington. Our batting collapsed in the semi-final against the top team Langwarrin and while we took the game right up to opposition, we blew an opportunity to make the grand-final. The side included many youngsters, giving them opportunity to further develop their cricket, with our

• lder lads leading the way with some fine performances. Aiden Lenehan showed class with all facets
• f his game while Jonah Avery continued his development from last year and both were promoted to

higher grades as the season progressed. Christian Hackel showed vast improvement during the season with his batting and fielding. Our other juniors were from the club’s under 14 side. Tom Garth, the standout, showed character, together with potential with the bat and ball and was easily our best fielder and eventual winner of the club fielding award. Will Whitnell worked hard all season, showing plenty of spirit along the way. Mason Weiser demonstrated maturity beyond his years, Bailey Nottle, Jacob Dunn and Bailey Quelch made the most of their opportunities while Lachlan Mitchell and Ryan Dowlan showed fortitude in the field and impressed with their enthusiasm. The older brigade of our side boasted a number of stars, led by Wes Garth, returning from a twenty- five year break and making it clear he had not lost any of his class and determination, feisty match winner in Ben Sargent who was simply outstanding in all areas of the game and Matt Dunn, who despite suffering various injuries, dominated proceedings, especially with the new ball. Old warrior Bob Skelly battled hard all season with his trademark fighting spirit, Jason Baulch worked hard behind the stumps while Ian Whitnell was a solid contributor each week. They were backed up by Darren Andrews and his competitiveness, Harry Andrews and Alex Skelly with their fielding exploits and Colin Avery, who once again showed that it is never too late to learn the game. It was also great to see

Presentation Night Season 2016/2017 Presidents Report, Captains Reports, Awards, Aggregates and Averages Damien Mitchell, Craig Quelch, Peter Hackel and Hayden Jardine playing their first senior games and we were lucky enough to have Ben Roach, Peter O’Neill, Matt Ashton, Luke Myatt and Paul Grogan help us out with cameo appearances during the season. President Brent Vandervalk and his committee worked hard behind the scenes to support us while Norm Jardine again continued his role as the tireless administrator. The father/son concept proved to be a massive winner for all involved, and for the club, and we definitely exceeded expectations by making finals. We look forward to doing it all again in 2017-18 with the goal of bringing home a flag. Reggie Crew Heatherhill CC owes a vote of thanks to MARK WEBBER for his excellent work in helping us get our storage shed and scoreboard up and running. Mark donated his time and efforts with regard to working drawings and gaining the building permit so that was a huge help to us. Mark works for “Dale Grant Building Design” in Hallam (9708-6602) and they handle all architectural drafting needs for Commercial, Industrial and Domestic building. So if any of

• ur members are looking to do some building work and need someone to help with

drafting or building permits then Mark is your man. Once again Mark, thanks for all your work on our behalf.

Congratulations from Dundrum Cricket Club in Northern Ireland on a superb season for Heatherhill Cricket Club and who knows, the next young stars could be coming over here to play Northern Knights representative cricket like Nick Larkin from

Cameron, were a massive help in our small village club. They directed excellent coaching sessions for juniors and seniors and consistently played good cricket both with bat and ball. The boys put a lot in to the club and I would also like to mention Ellie Woods who helped out with junior coaching and made fantastic afternoon teas. I hope other players at Heatherhill CC take the opportunity to come and play in Dundrum.
