THE TIGER ROAR

MENTONE CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER

Vol 8 Edition 6: Final Edition, May 2015 Official Website: http://mentonecc.vic.cricket.com.au/ President: Michael Young (M) 0417 319 529 Editor : Lachlan Quinn Contact: mentonecricketclub@yahoo.com.au (W) 9676 5447 (F) 9676 5424 (M) 0400 904 206 Welcome to the 2014/15 end of season edition of the Tiger Roar newsletter. In this edition you’ll find everything to cover the season just past. Included here is a President’s Report, Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report, thankyou to Michael Young and Cam Gumbleton for compiling

  • these. Peter Duffy has completed a Coaches

report and 1st XI Captains Report, and Jeremy Oliver has provided a Captains Report. We have some fun with the Fantasy League final results, and the winner of the Bignell Cup and the Hole in the Bat. All season statistics are compiled into a couple of pages, with the top 10s, Team of the Year and updated Career Stats for all players. There is a juniors report and as always plenty of photos people have provided, mostly courtesy of Justin Cuthill – many thanks for your support as always. There are a lot of people who put a lot of personal time and effort into our club so without naming names I would like to thank you all for your contributions to the season. There is plenty to be excited about and I look forward to seeing you all next season for what promises to again be another stepping stone in the growth of our club. Lachlan Quinn - Editor Presidents Report – Michael Young The 2014/2015 season had loads of highlights. The main one being all five senior sides making the finals. The seconds went on to play in a grand final, unfortunately going down to Carnegie after having a great season. Although making finals is an achievement going on to the ultimate success of winning a grand final is what we should all strive for. Now that all our seniors and a large number of our juniors have tasted finals action they should all want to go to the next level. Although our junior teams did not make finals many of them had an opportunity to play senior finals and games throughout the year. This puts the club in a strong position going forward. It was great to see the improvement in many of the

  • players. The club cannot field these junior sides

without managers/ coaches. They give their time and expertise freely and without any fuss. The club greatly appreciates all the work they do. Thank you to Stephen Oliver (U12’s), Jordan Young (U14’s) and Justin Cuthill (U16’s). It would be remiss of me if we did not acknowledge the contribution of Peter Duffy. As well as the many things he does off the field , Peter took on the responsibility of coaching the club and captaining the 1st eleven. Good job

  • Duff. Peter has stood down as captain of the first

eleven this year and we thank him for his efforts. You can now relax and enjoy your cricket even more. Off field has had its challenges. These challenges were capably handled by the by the committee. Lachlan and Brian Quinn are the backbone of the club and as secretary and vice president have done a mountain of work to ensure the club fields its eight sides and milo cricket on a weekly basis. Cam Gumbleton, as treasurer has really stepped up and is a very important part of the team. It was good to see some new faces get involved in the running of the club. Dan Young, is one that springs to mind. I would also like to acknowledge Chris O’Connor who won our best clubman this year. Chris has done a lot of work behind the scenes for a number of years and is a deserved winner of this prestigious award. From a personal perspective I did not spend as much time at the club as I would have liked due to illness and other commitments. It is because

  • f this that I am resigning as President. I’d like to

thank all the people who have helped me over the last few years especially the executive committee of Brian Quinn, Lachlan Quinn and Cam Gumbleton. These three are tireless workers for the club and are its heart and soul. It has been an honour to be president of this great club for a second time. I know it will be in good hands going forward and will continue to have success in years to come.

Secretary’s Report – Lachlan Quinn Season 2014/15 was a challenging year as most are, with continuing costs associated with putting cricket teams on the park each week combined with shortages of grounds, player recruitment, gradings and sponsorship. On Field we had a most successful year, minus any Premierships. To field 5 sides for the first time since 2005, including minimal forfeits, is

  • exceptional. Our winning % across all senior

sides was 63% led by great seasons to the Seconds (11 wins, 3 losses) and the Fifths (14 wins, 4 losses). All 5 sides making finals was a highlight, and although none achieved the ultimate, we are well placed to continue to build momentum as a club towards sustained success across all teams. Peter Duffy again led the selection committee through the difficult task of selecting teams each week, and does an enormous amount of work that is rarely seen outside of training and game day hours. A highlight this season was again the number of younger players across the grades, proof our junior program is working, with 9 Under 16s and 14s playing in senior teams. Amongst the highlights were Campbell Tedde taking a 5 for in the must win game for the Thirds against Murrumbeena in the final round, Cam Duffy finishing 2nd in the Hogben medal in his first full Senior season, Harry Skadiang and James Banfield, both under 14s, playing regular Senior cricket another highlight. We welcomed some new players to our club who we hope will be with us long into the future – Matt Tonkin, Maddy Mudiraj, Dan Fyfe, Al Jones and welcomed back Adrian Jones to his home club after a stint elsewhere. The club was again playing host to 4 overseas players in Chris Hughes, Will Hale, James Boon and Jack Unwin. Thankyou to all 4 for choosing Mentone and I hope you enjoyed your stay at our club. It’s not just an on field position when coming across as an Overseas player and I hope you enjoyed the

  • ff field part as well.

We celebrated Peter Duffy’s 300th game, milestones to Andrew Peake (4,000 runs), Dylan Gillespie (100 games and 2,000 runs), Leigh Jones (2,000 runs), Lewis Oliver and AJ Jones (100 games). Congrats and commiserations to the Second XI and Dylan for making the Grand Final, I’m sure the hurt from not winning will drive a number of you to continue to improve and have big pre seasons in preparation for the coming season. The Fifth XI won their Qualifying final but lost in a Prelim after a scheduling conflict saw us play with 8 players. Well done to Mick McGettigan and his cast of footballers and mates for again playing some entertaining cricket destined for the highlight reel. Mick himself probably had a lesser year but hopefully they are back again next

  • season. The Firsts, Thirds and Fourths all lost

their respective Semi Finals and will look to attain next year. Our biggest challenge at the start of the season was to resurrect the finances after a difficult 2013 season with high one-off costs of clothing and mandatory full pitch covers for the VTCA. You’ll read in the Treasurer’s report we have returned a profit this season and enter next year in a much healthier position. Big thankyou to Dan Young who put his hand up to help organise clothing this year. I think everyone will agree we looked amazing in our full colour one day clothes in the Firsts, Seconds and

  • T20s. Our off field gear continues to be a

highlight and we will look to place additional

  • rders next year with Dan leading all clothing

and merchandise discussions across suppliers. If you have any feedback on what you’d like to see please get in contact with him. Chris O’Connor won the Best Clubman award for his continued assistance to anything that was asked – Chris does a lot of tasks that aren’t seen by many and was a deserving winner. A highlight

  • f the Presentation Night was Chris’ speech which

spoke of the ‘fight of the Tiger’ and that we should continue to believe we can win from any position. We fielded 3 junior sides this season, whilst we don’t have the biggest junior program we do have one of the highest rates of kids continuing

  • n to senior cricket and I believe it’s a credit to

the senior players who welcome the kids at training and on game day. Our coaches in Justin Cuthill, Jordan Young and Stephen Oliver are to be commended for their work here. With no kids

  • f their own in the team, it’s an outstanding

gesture to give back to the club. I’m sure all 3 look at the high ratio of juniors playing seniors, and are proud

  • f

their impact. Junior Presentation Night was a great success and a terrific reflection on all of our kids and parents and coaches that they were so well behaved on the night. We again fielded a Milo in2cricket program on Friday at Mentone, our thanks to Stuart Mills and Dane Heverin for running these sessions. This season we entered our first Milo T20 Blast team

  • n Saturday mornings.

A great concept we had a team of 8 play from 9- 10.45am on Saturdays in round robin 16 over games, where the boys got used to match formats and learnt some skills along the way. We look forward to again entering a team next season. We also backed up with another Pink Stumps Day that raised some $350 for the McGrath

  • Foundation. We held a T20 game at Mentone on

the Sunday and had great turnout from the senior players. Highlight was seeing our young juniors including Eddy McGarry, Harry Skadiang, Will Roworth and the star of the day, Under 12 Alex Jones who made his highest score in the

  • match. Thanks to all who donated.

As always the season couldn’t operate without the assistance of many around our club. My thanks to: All who assisted with our overseas players, including work, accommodation and looking after them – Ty Edwards, Cam & Jase G, John Bamfield and Paula Alexander, Leigh Jones, Lewis, Stephen and Amanda Oliver and BQ. To our Captains – Duff, Dylan, Skads, Dan Young, Jeremy Oliver, Mick McGettigan, Lewis and all of the various 4ths Captains, its always an honour to Captain our club and I hope you took great pride from the seasons we had. Junior Coaches – to Justin Cuthill, Jordan Young, Stephen Oliver, Stuart Mills and Dane Heverin,

  • ur thanks to you for taking the time to teach our

young kids. I hope you found it rewarding as the feedback from the parents and kids was fantastic, and I hope you continue next season. Committee – to Mick who is finishing up as President, you should be proud of your 2 seasons where the club turned it’s on field fortunes around and again became a strong club across all

  • grades. 3 of 4 and 5 of 5 senior sides in finals

under your time. You were also a great mentor for Cam and myself as we began to oversee more

  • f the running of our club. Your experience was

greatly appreciated. BQ - again served as Vice President and was a great source of advice for us. He played an integral role in organising the Junior Academy, trophies for both presentation nights, communication with the VTCA and attendance at many Association meetings. He again sourced a job for our Overseas which was a great help. He was a constant presence on match days and continues to be a loyal advocate for Mentone. Duff – again a tireless volunteer at our club, 1st Captain, Senior Coach, Junior Manager, Chairman

Thursday nights, including the wheel (congrats to Bear who won 4 slabs and it took until the Grand Final for someone to win the total prize). Duff has stepped down as 1st XI Captain after leading us to successive semi-finals. Cam – served us as Treasurer ensuring finances were balanced all season. Secured 6 new sponsors which greatly contributed towards the club’s end of year financial recovery position. Continued to be the off field presence behind the bar, at functions and on Thursday evenings in the kitchen, that holds the club together. Many underestimate the work he puts in but it is most appreciated from all involved. Lewis – as recruiter, he’s helped shape the club in its current form with recruiting many players to the club, and stepped up with increased maturity towards the back end of the season. Without realising it he has become a leader at the club and we look forward to him returning from England and continuing his fine form that saw him land the Club Champion award. To all who helped with the pitch – Skinny, Pete O’Brien, Duff and others who helped out. To anyone who served behind the bar and assisted with closing up each Thursday &

  • Saturday. It’s a vital part of our club revenue and

we need to continue to share the load. Player sponsors – to everyone who supported us as a player sponsor for the season Moving forward the Cricket Victoria Turf Restructure represents significant changes for the 2016/17 season if it gets the green light. The proposal splits Turf Cricket into regional zones that challenges the history and traditions of the current competitions. On first release Mentone was placed in the Southern bracket with travel to areas such as Cranbourne, Berwick, Doveton and Hampton Park. We have submitted and requested to CV that we believe we belong in the South East zone, reducing travel and maintaining ties with our local rivals. We are here to represent our club and as such if you have feedback or consideration for us please make this known so we can act on your behalf. My thankyou to all of our treasured sponsors – Hodges Mentone, Poolstore Bayside, Bendigo Bank, LSA Partners, People’s Choice Credit Union, Hole in One Pizza, Gumbleton Carpentry, Proview Constructions, A Plus Flooring, Mark Lee

biggest number of sponsors we have had in one season. They are crucial to our survival so please use their services and mention you are from Mentone

  • CC. We need their support to continue to grow.

In summary the club is in a good position with playing numbers at an all-time high. We do face some significant challenges with the Turf restructure, ongoing financial viability, committee numbers and junior retention. We are investing heavily in our facilities through renovating the turf wicket; and bringing on board curators who have worked at the Junction oval and the Albert

  • Ground. We will also continue to focus on our

junior program, with heavy focus on coaching, development and retention at each age group. It’s important we continue to welcome our junior players who are playing senior cricket, make them feel comfortable and safe in a friendly

  • environment. They are our future.

Everyone can play a part in continuing to improve this great club – I urge you all to think

  • f one small way you can assist for the coming

season. Pink Stumps Day crew Brian Quinn and Michael Young meeting with Labor Premier Daniel Andrews before the announcement of funding to support the Mentone reserve master plan Treasurer’s Report – Cameron Gumbleton

  • Congratulations. 12 months ago we presented a

horrible season. Today we have paid off last year’s debt, and made a profit on this season. A massive effort to all involved.

  • Senior subs were up on last year.
  • Clothing sales/profit was well up.
  • Sponsorship was back up to an equal

record. A massive effort. Thank you to Duff for arranging all player sponsors and the ground signage. All the players for paying up when asked and the support of every player after last season. A few points we still need work on.

  • Weekly subs- it is a player’s responsibility

to pay these and not be chased by your captain

  • r myself. Everyone knows they need to be paid

so please bring your money to games not excuses.

  • Club Functions, as good a year as it was it

could have been a lot better. We had really only 1 function this year and we need more people to get involved and help arranging functions and running them. The committee is committed to making Mentone the best club to play at in the Comp, to continue to make this happen we are investing money in the Mentone wicket. Many complain it’s not up to standard and always blame the curator. Well next year there is no excuse, we have hired a professional Curator who has a proven background getting the best out of the wicket. Previous grounds he has worked on – The Junction Oval, The Albert Ground, Middle Park, etc etc. Now more than ever we need people drinking over the bar, attending functions and paying subs. PLEASE make an effort to pay up early as possible. As a committee we will endeavour to put funds towards making each and every player at Mentone better for being a part of our great club. Please support us. The First XI in action in our 1 day clothing

COACH’S REPORT – Peter Duffy Firstly, I’d like to thank the Committee for showing their faith in me to take on the Senior Coaching role. Sure, I’d coached juniors for a number of seasons but taking on the main role at the club is a very different challenge and one that I was really looking forward to. This season was definitely one of trial and error. Some things I tried worked and others didn’t but the whole way I was trying to find what best suited the group. Dealing with 100% dedicated cricketers to those who were just out to have a bit of fun is difficult to balance especially when it comes to training. Not that there’s anything wrong with playing for fun, as we all should but when it comes to a level of commitment, it can be a challenge. My personal belief is that to make a good coach, you need to work just as hard with the 1st player picked as you do with the 44th. As a club, we need to continue to see improvement the whole way through. I was extremely happy with the blend of youth and experience that we had through the grades and I think this really contributed to all teams representing the club in

  • finals. To see some of the young fellas show

their talents in getting us all there was very satisfying. While it was fantastic to have all sides make finals, to finish the season without a flag was very disappointing. All teams had their

  • pportunities but in the end couldn’t put it all

together when it counted most which should make all that bit hungrier for next season. Winning finals usually comes down to who handles the pressure the best, not necessarily the best team. We can all take a lot from our finals opponents and make sure that it’s us who handle the pressure best next season. One of the best quotes I’ve heard is “if you continue to do the same things, expect the same results”. That’s why I’ll continue to challenge the group next season to try different things so we aren’t again “left at the alter” when the business end of the season comes around. For the younger guys in the group, I’d like to lay

  • ut a challenge for you to use your youth and

energy to lift our training tempo and hopefully this will drag the more experienced guys along as we all try to achieve the ultimate success. I’m really looking forward to Season 2015/16 as I believe we have a lot to offer and the let down of

  • ur finish to 2014/15, will push us all on to go

that extra step. CAPTAIN’S REPORTS First XI – Peter Duffy This may come as a surprise but, on reflection, this season will go down as the most satisfying of the three seasons I have been at the helm of the 1st XI. Sure we finished in the same position as we did the previous season but to come from where we were at Christmas (2nd bottom) to make the finals, was a great show of character from the group. Where many would have “put the cue in the rack”, we worked out, as a team, what we had to do to make the finals and worked hard to make sure it happened. Getting knocked out by the eventual premier in the semi was difficult to take but maybe we had used up all our petrol tickets in getting there. This season was a real test in leadership for some

  • f our younger regulars. My two vice-captains got

exposed to not just on-field decision making but training, selection and all the highs and lows that go with the responsibility. Jordan Young had a tough season for a number

  • f reasons and will only benefit from the
  • experience. I think he learnt a lot about himself,

his game and how to deal with others in the

  • group. At such a young age, I’m sure his best is

still in front of him. Lewis Oliver would have also learnt a lot. He is a great thinker of the game and it was fantastic to see him come out of his shell and share his thoughts. Not only did he relish the

  • pportunity to be a leader, he capped it off on

field by winning his first Club Champion. It was fantastic to get some “new blood” into the team and no one had a bigger impact than Matt

  • Tonkin. His 100* on debut was a ripper and

although he would’ve loved to get more season runs, he was definitely the most consistent with the bat. Chris McCready was again the pick of the bowlers and his 9 wicket match haul against South Premiers, Chelsea, was one of the best I’ve been involved with. Still a young man, Creads will continue to improve and hopefully spearhead the Mentone attack for years to come. If there was a “most determined, courageous, consistent, team player” award then Lachlan Quinn would win it by the length of the straight. First at the club to open up, do the drinks, set up chairs, you name it, then go out and bowl his heart out or bat as if his life depended on it when the top order failed - an amazing example of what we need to do to achieve the ultimate success.

After three seasons, it’s time for me to step down as Captain and I’d like to thank the Committee for their continual support. When I took on the role, I planned to leave the 1st XI in better shape when it was my time to go and with the group that is here now, I think I’ve achieved that. I will always be extremely proud to say, “I captained the great Mentone Cricket Club!” Fourth XI – Jeremy Oliver 2014/15 saw the return of Sunday cricket to

  • Mentone. After leading the team to a stirring

win in Round 1, Captain and President Mick Young was forced to stand aside for health

  • reasons. The rest of the pre-Christmas period

saw no less than 4 more captains with Cam, Skads, Juzzy and Tonks all having stints with varying success. The highlight was the win over eventual premiers Hampton and the lowlight was the loss to Caulfield Grammar\NCG away. Despite Fish making 50 not out, a record 8 of the other 9 players made ducks. After Christmas I was given the honour to lead the team for the rest of the year. Probably the highlight of the year was the win over South Caulfield away who were top

  • f the table at the time. Mentone amassed a

massive 194 off 36 overs. South Caulfield were 2/115 off 18 overs but the boys fought back to get the win by 1 run, including a great final over by Norton J Armstrong into the wind. A win over local rivals Beaumaris saw as make the finals and set up a show down with minor premiers Hampton. Despite super a bowling effort from Tommy Barker and a great effort from Lachie Tedde with bat, Hampton were far too good for us and we were left to lick our wounds thinking what could have been. However with so many positives the year was still clearly a successful one. James ‘Tiger’ Banfield was extremely impressive and has a big future at the club. Other young guys Harry Skadiang, Eddie McGarry, Sam Thiele and Cam Duffy all contributed at different times and demonstrated they will be great players for years to come. The not so young John Bamfield, Al Jones and “Golden Tweeter” Wally Tedde also made valuable contributions throughout the season. A special thanks to all the 1s, 2s and 3s players that doubled up and helped out over the season. Also thanks to the awesome support we received throughout the season with great numbers coming down to watch. Last but not least thanks to the committee and Duff for everything they did to help make the year possible. First XI wicketkeeper James Boon is presented with his Mentone cap by Vice President and Life Member Brian Quinn

Both new recruits to the club this year, Matt Tonkin and Maddy Mudiraj batting against Chelsea in round 6. Genuine disbelief at Jack Unwin taking a catch Captured in all its glory, Stu Scullin’s famous “late cut”

2014/15 TEAM OF THE YEAR Jeremy Oliver – 333 runs @ 27.75 (1 x 50) Doubled his previous run count with 333 runs including 5 scores of 30+. Batted with control early before unleashing with customary cover drives and the trademark hoick over cow corner. Took on the 4ths Captaincy and was a deserved winner of the Most Improved Senior trophy. Very handy to have on board for a lift when the likes

  • f Hale, Unwin, L.Oliver and McCready want to

head to St Kilda or the Casino. Will Hale - 383 runs @ 23.94 (1 x 50) 5th leading run scorer, had quite a few starts without going on as much he’d hoped. Still a very handy player in this side. Gun fielder with 6 runouts and 9 catches, even flirted with the “all- rounder” status after taking wickets after

  • Christmas. Shocking bloke to take out for a few

beers afterwards, hence Andy Ware has been appointed as his personal bodyguard. Jack Unwin – 587 runs @ 29.4 (1 x 100; 3 x 50s) Great season from another Hallam CC recruit, Jack came to us after not playing a lot of cricket in the UK with Uni and travel in the past 2 years. He was an excellent bat, solid and dependable and showed that in the Grand Final with a great fighting innings of 70. Improved his fielding, but who wouldn’t coming off such a low base? Needs new training gear (that red top?) and doesn’t mind showing off the guns. Would be the 1st one

  • ut on the town celebrating a win.

Matt Tonkin – 416 runs @ 27.7 (1 x 100; 3 x 50s) A huge coup to get him playing for us after being around the club for so long. First XI batting average, century on debut, 16 sixes and would have taken a lot more wickets if our fielders hadn’t dropped so many off him (just ask him)… Don’t expect him to give you a lift and make sure he watches the hammy. Great for a beer and a story after match. Andrew Ware – 384 runs @ 25.6 (1 x 50) 2nd season with us and 2nd time in the TOTY, another consistent year with 384 runs, debuted in the Firsts and celebrated in style. Challenge now for him to go up another level, and make 500+. Has a security background and well needed with this group. Terrific guy to have and we are very lucky he joined Mentone. Chris Hughes – 400 runs @ 30.8 (1 x 50); 30 wickets @ 16.9 Our curator, spin bowler and resident pest, Slim Healy’s numbers are simply outstanding and a credit to him for performing so well on a consistent basis. Stood up for the Firsts with 36 runs and 4 wickets in the Semi, made good runs at the top of the order in the Seconds, and drastically improved the Firsts with his spin bowling after Christmas. Reckons he’ll prepare a road for each week, will need a lift and will not stop talking for the entire match. Lewis Oliver – 329 runs @ 16.5; 21 wickets @ 23.0 - Captain Hard to believe it’s his first time in the TOTY. Installed as First XI vice-Captain and T20 Captain, a big year for Lew including turning 21 and heading off to England. Took on the key all- rounders role in the Firsts and was superb with the ball on numerous occasions. Batting was very good when on vs. Murrumbeena and Parkdale

  • United. Played a key role as Duff’s lieutenant

(although not one for team talks) and fines master, winning his first of hopefully many Club Champion awards that are held so dearly at this

  • club. A big call but he is appointed Captain of this

side after showing great maturity and leadership post the T20 captaincy. James Boon – 217 runs @ 31.0; 24 catches, 4 runouts, 2 stumpings Overseas wicketkeeper from Dan Hudson’s Kingholm, had an excellent year behind the stumps, kept very well after a shaky start injuring himself in the warmup for round 1. Batting improved dramatically, very solid and reliable, not out in 7 of 14 innings and top score

  • vs. the South Division Premiers. Handy to drive

home after everyone else has had a few. Prolific Bignell vote poller and great value in the team. Chris McCready –25 wickets @ 16.9 (1 x 5 for) The First XI spearhead is again one of the first picked despite missing a couple of games early whilst recovering from injury. Took good wickets for the season and fought hard with the bat to get the First XI over the line in crucial games. Took 9 wickets after Chelsea who won the South Division flag; keep away from shouts with Will. Adrian Jones – 53 wickets @ 13.08 (1 x 5 for, 1 x Hat trick) Returned to his home club and played in the Seconds and T20 team, record number of wickets since Results Vault began taking stats in 2002. A whopping 251 overs (1,500 balls) plus countless in the nets. 32 of his 53 wickets were bowled or LBW, won the Hogben and drives a panel van that will be handy to take any equipment to away games. Liam Anastasio – 36 wickets @ 14.75 (1 x 5 for) The 8th player to be in for the first time, Liam had a great season and continues to improve as a

  • bowler. Made an impact in the Seconds and

Firsts, including a match winning 5 for against Parkdale United to kick-start the Firsts season. Great effort playing in the Seconds GF and taking

  • wickets. Definitely batting 11 but showed in the

GF he can hit a long ball. Can’t be trusted behind the bar. Unlucky – C Gumbleton, C Duffy, A Fauzdar, D Gillespie

Team of the Year representation (Since 2009/10) 3 – Matt Lalor, Brett Collins, Jordan Young, Andrew Peake, Dylan Gillespie, Jim Jeffery 2 – Gavin Brown, Peter Duffy, Ken Lockhart, Darren Stafrace, Xavier Burke, Mick McGettigan, Andrew Ware, Cam Gumbleton, Chris McCready 1 – Chris Takouridis, Darren Skadiang, Stu Scullin, Luke Wintle, David Galloway, Chad Ryan, Paul O’Brien, David Teasdale, Jack Snelling, Brendan Cleary, Shane Valenti, Brian Quinn, Tom Barker, Leigh Jones, Karanjit Bansal, Luke Beveridge, Dane Heverin, Doug Pritchard, Chris Davies, Danny Mines, Sam Eaton, Tom Garside, Simon Watkins, Andrew Ware, Avinash Fauzdar, Will Hale, Jeremy Oliver, Jack Unwin, Matt Tonkin, Chris Hughes, Lewis Oliver, James Boon, Adrian Jones, Liam Anastasio HOGBEN MEDAL The Hogben Medal is an extremely prestigious award, named after the famous Hogben family of Stan and Betty, who were major contributors to

  • ur club for over 50 seasons. Stan Hogben served

41 seasons as Treasurer, wife Betty was always by his side assisting with scoring, bar duties and won best club person twice. Both were awarded life membership, hall of fame status and such is their partnership they were inducted as one of the club’s inaugural legends of the Mentone CC. Champion all-rounder Matt Lalor won the award 5 times in 6 seasons, whilst previous winners have included Shane Valenti in 2011/12, Jake Punton in 2012/13 and Simon Watkins in 2013/14. This season the Hogben medal was held on Saturday night after the final game, with a strong turnout across all teams with the added celebration of following the results to see the Thirds make finals, and secure all 5 senior sides in finals for our teams. Adrian “AJ” Jones went into the count as the short priced favourite after his dominant favourite, but faced some competition for votes from Jack Unwin, the Faz, and the likes of Chris Hughes and Lewis Oliver, Doug Pritchard and Matt Tonkin. In the end the bookies were spot on, AJ Jones won with 18 votes and was a deserved winner. His home and away season yielded 38 wickets and a hat trick; consistently the best player in any team for the season. 2nd place was Under 16 Cameron Duffy, who played the majority of the season developing in the Third XI. Cam made 131 runs and took 16 wickets with his right arm off-spin, and is going to be a super player. In 3rd place was Chris Hughes, Doug Pritchard and Lachlan Quinn with 13 votes. Hole in the Bat This year’s winner of the hole in the bat was Lachie Tedde. Awarded to the player with the most ducks scored in the season, young Tedde won this with 6 ducks ahead of Jordan Young and Alex McNeill on 5. After starting the season on fire with a pull shot for 6 at Turner Rd in the first over of the season, he went on to score 47 and begin in a blaze of

  • glory. Unfortunately he endured a run of 6 ducks

in 10 innings by the end of January, on track to break the record of 8 set many years ago. Lachie recovered to post a wonderful fighting innings of 45 in the Fourths semi-final, in front of a big Mentone crowd, to highlight to everyone his undoubted talent. Certainly big things to come with bat and ball and as is the character he is he took the award in good stride, joining fellow winners such as Peter Duffy, Jason Gumbleton, Lewis Oliver and last year’s winner, Jimmy Jeffery. Final Tally 6 – L.Tedde 5 – J.Young, A.McNiell 4 – P.Duffy, AJ Jones, J.Fisher 3 – T.Edwards, M.McGettigan, C.O’Connor, L.Oliver, T.Barker, L.Anastasio, D.Young, D.Fyfe Duff presents AJ with his Hogben Medal Lachie Tedde “relaxing” before batting in the Third XI final round game against Murrumbeena

Top 20's - Games, Runs and Wickets

Congratulations to the following players who achieved milestones throughout this season: Peter Duffy played his 300th senior game against Chelsea, highlighted by a birthday cake made by Stephen Oliver, presented at afternoon tea, and a guard of honour by the Chelsea boys, a terrific gesture. Duff, being the hardnosed competitor that he is, hated all the fuss, but deserved every bit of it. He moved into equal 10th spot on the all-time games list, alongside legendary ‘keeper Ray James. Michael Young played 1 match before missing with injury and work, taking him to 412 matches, still comfortably in 3rd spot. Stephen Oliver played 2 games at the end of the season, to bring him to 291 matches and 16th place overall. Dylan Gillespie, Lewis Oliver and Adrian “AJ” Jones played their 100th matches for Mentone. Peter Duffy’s 14 games saw him move up to 12th spot overtaking Don Curtain. Andrew Peake made his 4,000th run, finishing the season on 4,058 and now only 264 away from entering the top 20 all-time run scorers. Dylan Gillespie (2,051) and Leigh Jones (2,022) both cracked 2,000 runs, whilst Shane Valenti (1,121) and Darren Skadiang (1,030) passed the 1,000 run mark in their careers. We are not sure on how far back we can go, but pretty sure Shane Valenti’s 1,000 runs passed in just his 35th match (and 32 innings) is some sort of record, certainly back to the season that prodigious talent Rex Hunt had. Cam Gumbleton took his 200th wicket for Mentone in his 5 wicket haul against McKinnon in South C1. Chris O’Connor sent down his 4,000th ball for Mentone CC – that’s 666 overs of stump to stump, consistent medium pace from Cannons. Highest Scores Congrats to the following who made their highest scores for the club this season – Liam Anastasio (19), Alex McNeill (26), Chris McCready (22), Josh Freney (29*), Cam Duffy (32), Tim Pritchard (41*), Stuart Mills (41*) Lachie Tedde (47), Doug Pritchard (49), Josh Fisher (50), Jeremy Oliver (50*), John Bamfield (57), Dan Young (67*), Lewis Oliver (88) and Matt Tonkin (100*). Upcoming Milestones Next season we have some big milestones coming up: Cam Gumbleton (196) will play his 200th and Stu Scullin (188) and Andrew Peake (186) are a chance if they play enough games. Chris Takouridis (149) will play his 150th and Jimmy Jeffery (96) his 100th. Taka (197), AJ (195) and Jimmy (194) are all on track for 200 wickets, Chris O’Connor (96), Darren Skadiang (94) and “Lethal” Leigh Jones (92) are all closing in on 100 wickets as is One Day grade spearhead Doug Pritchard who has taken 88 wickets from his 42 matches. The Chelsea boys give Duff a guard of honour in his 300th game in round 6 at Mentone

Overseas Players Summary This season continuing our tradition of hosting

  • verseas players we had Will Hale, James Boon,

Chris Hughes and Jack Unwin play for Mentone. Will Hale Will had a decent season although didn’t make the runs he or the club wanted. He finished with 383 runs across the Firsts and T20s, with some decent innings against Hampton in the T20s and against Carnegie in the Firsts. Although there were times where he was frustrated with his form, we hope he takes a lot of positives out of the way he fought through the season. He will be remembered as much for his laughter and humour off the field as for his fielding; easily the best we’ve seen at Mentone, Will was responsible for 6 direct hit run outs, some of us don’t achieve that in a lifetime. The amount of runs he saved at cover/point this season was

  • incredible. He returns back to his UK club

Lytham, we hope he remembers his time at Mentone with fondness, and returns to the club in the future. James Boon Boony was a welcome addition as a wicketkeeper/bat for the Firsts, joining us after Dan Hudson sent him across from his new club in England, Kingsholm CC. On field he made 217 runs at an average of 31, with 14 hits for only 7

  • uts, including a run of 6 innings in a row

without being dismissed before succumbing for a pair against Chelsea. He captured 24 catches and 2 stumpings placing him 2nd in South A and 23rd

  • f all wicketkeepers in the VTCA First XI grades.

He had a few odd habits including always being the last person ready to go out onto the field, leaving his bag at home, and a strange habit of getting injured in the most innocuous situations. He was great to have around the change rooms and improved his communication as ‘keeper after getting used to the Australian style after Christmas. Chris Hughes Chris Hughes joined us from Hampton & Solihull CC in the North of England. “Slim Healy” as he was mistakenly referred to by Craig could talk under water and loves to argue with anyone if they ask him to do something, but he proved time and again he’s a damn fine cricketer with a tough mindset who hates to be beaten. He made 400 runs and took 30 wickets, winning the Fantasy League with his side. He was the leading player based on Fantasy points with 740 points – AJ coming 2nd on 659. He clearly improved the First XI after coming back in for the last game before Christmas, with 17 wickets in 5 games and 115 runs. He was also our curator at the Mentone ground and despite many times you’d see him stopping work to chat to anyone in the vicinity, he somehow got a pitch together each week for us to play on. He now heads to Mildura to work for a couple of months before hopefully returning to join us next season. We’d love to have him back. Jack Unwin Jack joined us from Hallam CC where past players include Humphrey Emery, Steve Turner, Nick Dymock, Jack Snelling and Danny Mines. After completing University and taking a year off to travel, Jack arrived and immediately found out he was allergic to Dogs, having to move out of his planned home which was a credit to him that he had such a great season. All up he scored 587 runs, winning the most runs in seniors, Second XI Batting Average. He made a stunning 162* against Parkdale United and would probably still be batting now had he been given the chance. He hated getting out, and was really competitive, a great guy to have on your team. However you would have zero confidence in him turning up to a Sunday game in any respectable

  • state. Not one of the best fielders to ever grace

the turf, his other strength was clearly his off- field work. He won the Ryan Bignell Cup, joining past overseas winners Danny Mines and Sam

  • Eaton. Loved a beer and heading out, he

eventually found his way to stay with Stephen and Amanda Oliver and we thank them for taking Jack in and to Lewis for being his taxi. Jack heads back to Hallam and working life no doubt better off for the experience. His first 2 games back in England have seen scores of 60 and 70 before a call-up to the Firsts and top score of 42. Just another night in for Chris McCready and Will Hale celebrating the First XI win against Parkdale United

Ryan Bignell Cup The Ryan Bignell Cup is in its 6th year, and is a light hearted, fun way of giving votes to players who do the silly and strange things on or off the cricket field. Previous winners of the award include James “Shaun Tait” Armstrong, Xavier “Chains” Burke, Brett “Trivia Night” Collins, Danny “Hungry Jacks” Mines and Sam “Seaworld” Eaton. This season all votes were posted online on the Facebook page to prevent any legal action and again centred on the humorous and downright unbelievable things our players said or did throughout the season. Overseas recruit James Boon was an early leader after polling votes for “not knowing that you can be given out LBW if it pitches outside off stump, leaving his cricket bag in the clubrooms and getting 20 mins down the road before realising, complaining about having to wear a fluoro vest when square leg umpiring, getting hit in the warmups and not being able to keep, getting hit by a throw on the bounce from fine leg and asking a woman who was walking a dog, if it was a real dog”. 5ths skipper Mick McGettigan was prominent early polling votes each time an opposition captain rang in a panic querying where our team was, only for Mick and 10 players to turn up at 8 minutes to 1 and somehow get everything ready for play in about 2 minutes. Andy Ware and Jack Unwin both polled big votes for their efforts after the round 13 clash against Parkdale United. Jack after making a mammoth 162no, and Andy for just being Andy and his larger than life celebrations. This year’s winner was Englishman Jack Unwin. Some highlights of Jack’s season

  • Dummy spit after being run out in his first

game for the club after making 50.

  • Calling a 4 when the ball went over the

white boundary line still showing from footy

  • Wearing a bright red t-shirt in the warmup
  • vs. Parkdale United.
  • Applying to be a male model on Gum

Tree.

  • Asking if we were wearing black pads

before the 2 dayer, when he was fully clothed in whites against Chelsea.

  • Asking if we change teams for the 2

dayers, get to take a new ball, and whether the 4

  • vers we bowl on the first day count towards the

match the next week.

  • Unable to drive a manual van at work
  • Training in singlet & torn off denim shorts
  • Made 162 vs. Parkdale United. Sick at the

club, sick at my house, playing Pink Stumps Day shirtless, throwing his helmet and bat, mentioning he made a hundred at least 162 times.

  • Wearing boat shoes to the 4ths semi.

Fighting with Whale, Creads & Andy.

  • Forgetting his whites day 2 of the 2nds GF

Mentone CC Fantasy League We again ran the highly popular Fantasy League which pitted the great super coach minds of the Mentone CC along with a few sceptical Poms, with participants picking a team of highly sought after players under a tough salary cap. All players were rated as a batsman, bowler, all- rounder or wicketkeeper, and valued between $9,000 and $13,000 which was deemed the highest value. Much research and past stats go into valuing players based on your average points for the last 3 rolling seasons. As usual selections were widespread, with Englishman Will Hale (17) in the most number of teams, along with all-rounders Lewis Oliver (14) and Avinash Fauzdar (16) proving very popular with selectors. They also found what was thought to be a bargain in highly rated youngster Lachie Tedde, who was a steal at only $9,000 in the all- rounders category and picked in 12 of the 26

  • teams. After starting off with 47 in his first game

most selectors thought they had unearthed a

  • gem. Unfortunately he went on to win the hole in

the bat with 6 ducks, but did score 352 points. Others to feature prominently were wicketkeeper James Boon (selected in 10 teams) and 2nd XI grand final hero Tom Garside (12 matches). The big bust for selectors was Tom’s twin brother Dan, who despite early rumours of a comeback,

  • nly played a single one day match in the
  • Fourths. 7 selectors including this one, included

Dan in their side and had to put up with the 18 solitary points for the season. Other busts included those silly enough to listen to 5th XI skipper Mick McGettigan that Hawthorn star Jared Roughead was a “certainty to play most games” – again, yours truly fell for that and selected big Rough only for him to play 1 match for a single wicket and 10 points. In terms of value for points scored versus $ cost, the obvious top 5 were up there. Liam Anastasio at $10,000 was well performed, scoring 453 points on the back of a breakout season of 36

  • wickets. Most Improved winner Jeremy Oliver

was a bargain at $9,000 with 368 points, and Jason Gumbleton ($10,000 and 381 points) was the best scoring wicketkeeper. Perhaps the biggest miss was no one selecting Fifth XI opening bowler Doug Pritchard, who again had a strong season scoring 149 runs, 21 wickets and 379 points. No one had him. And of course the great success story was the return of AJ Jones, who despite telling people early he was

  • nly going to play a few one day games, astute

selectors Chris Hughes and Lachie Tedde both selected him as AJ finished on 659 points and the 2nd best player overall. Chris Hughes won the Fantasy League with his selected side in order: Jordan Young (387 points), Lewis Oliver (579), Michael Young (32), Jeremy Oliver (368), Chris Hughes (740), Avinash Fauzdar (421), Mick McGettigan (359), James Boon (377), Adrian Jones (659), Stuart Mills (182), Chris O’Connor (107). His side finished on 4211 points, just ahead of 2nd place getter Dane Heverin (4129) with Lachie Tedde (4091) finishing 3rd. Chris won the tidy sum of $100, so I hope he buys those in his team a drink when he returns next season. Chris Hughes himself was the most valuable player points wise for the season, scoring 400 runs, taking 30 wickets and finishing on 740

  • points. AJ (659) and Jack Unwin (622) were next,

with Lewis Oliver (579) and Will Hale (498) rounding out the top 5. This season we had 26 participants with most paying up which was nice not to have to chase people for money like last season. It was good to see people like Dane continuing to stay involved along with Blake Thompson who has been struggling with illness but continues to stay involved with the club. And good to see entries from our past overseas players in Jack Snelling (11th), Sam Eaton (15th) and Simon Watkins (18th). Ty Edwards was a clear last having a bowling attack of Justin Cuthill (54 points), Dan Garside (18) and Pete McGettigan (0), whilst yours truly finished 2nd last which surely must be some sort of record to finish 1400 points off the leader for a competition you created and run. Whilst not naming names my side clearly suffered from a selection policy to pick Dan Garside, Jared Roughead and Leigh Jones. As always it’s hard to line up where people will begin and end in certain roles: Lewis Oliver was named as a batsman on the back of never bowling at training and having sent down just 32 and 38 overs the prior seasons, who would have thought he’d emerge so strongly as a genuine all- rounder for the First XI. Dylan Gillespie was named as a wicketkeeper as he is a wicketkeeper, however with the availability of Jason Gumbleton to keep in the Seconds, and the burning desire like most skippers for Dylan to give himself a bowl, saw him take 14 wickets while still taking 10 catches in the outfield. Norton J Armstrong was again listed as an all- rounder and again showed he’s yet to master either the batting or bowling side of cricket, with 78 runs and 5 mercurial wickets to go with the matches he didn’t sleep in and miss. I hope you all enjoyed the season as much as I did compiling the stats and updates.

Around the Club Tommy Barker broke one of the all-time great records this season when he made his first runs in over 2 seasons. Tommy has a knack for talking his batting down, but after hitting the winning runs in a Grand Final win he perhaps let the headlines get carried away a bit too much, so much that he went 11 innings without scoring. Regularly asked if he wanted a hit at training, Tommy would reply “no thanks, I’m hitting them fine”. After not scoring since December 2012, he finally broke the run of 0s in round 10, on the 13th of December 2014 against McKinnon, and was celebrated by a guard of honour as he entered the clubrooms that evening. He followed it up with a smashing 2no against Hampton in the Fourths semi-final, and is now on a roll. The return this season of Adrian “AJ” Jones was great to see after spending a couple of seasons playing under his brother in law at

  • Murrumbeena. This culminated in his most

successful season of individual cricket as he claimed 53 wickets, won the most wickets at the club, the 2nd XI bowling average, a hat-trick and played his 100th game. His tally of 53 wickets was the most taken since we began online records in 2002; surpassing Chris Takouridis season of 45 wickets in 2009/10. He also proved what a workhorse he was. He bowled a mammoth 251.3 overs, or 1,509 balls, which was 90 overs more than the next person. This despite the fact he was regularly bowling off the long run at training. Luke Beveridge was appointed Senior Coach at the Western Bulldogs. Luke has played 37 games at Mentone in our One Day team, scoring 929 runs at an average of 38. This season he played 5 matches, scoring 193 runs and hit the most sixes with 18, after leading last season with 16

  • sixes. Not bad to say that more than 50% of

yours runs comes in sixes. Great to see Jared Roughead, Cameron Bruce, Brendan Bolton and Adem Yze representing Mentone in our Fifth XI this season. They are all

  • n the Hawthorn staff and through an association
  • riginally through Bevo and Mick, they have

featured in many of our games. And of course former Hawthorn listed favourite Brett Collins who played 1 game in the Fifths, highlighted when he rode his bike to the wicket at Mordi High, then left at the tea break before fielding and didn’t show up the week later. Will Hale’s effort of 6 direct hit run outs took us through the archives to find some of the more successful seasons had by fielders. Lachie Tedde was involved in 6 run outs last season, with 5 direct hits, but none more so than 6. Cam Gumbleton is always one to play a number

  • f games across all grades as a combination of

injuries & early season washouts play their part. This season we wondered, could he be the first player to play in all 5 teams? Cam represented the first 4 teams, including Captaining the Thirds and Fourths. But sadly no game for the Fifths meant he had to settle for 4/5 teams. Lewis Oliver is another who usually sneaks down for a game in the lower grades, and he gladly put someone out of a game to have a run in the Seconds in round 14 after the Firsts suffered a

  • forfeit. Lewis also played one match in the Fifths

when the Firsts were washed out after Christmas. With planned skipper Michael Young going down with injury after the first game for the Fourth XI, how’s this for a list of players who also captained the team: Darren Skadiang, Cam Gumbleton, Stu Scullin, Justin Cuthill, Matt Tonkin, Andy Ware, Jeremy Oliver and probably

  • thers I have missed. Safe to say Jezz Oliver saw

his opportunity and seized it, working under the famous Billy Birmingham line, “let’s work as a team and do it my way”. He even suggested to Duff that they pick the Fourth XI first and then the remaining teams, and made sure the Fourths were recognised when he read the teams out himself on Semi Final eve. With the retirement of Brian Quinn, Phil Thomas and only 3 games played between Stephen Oliver and Michael Young this year, it leaves the club with a significant lack of experience in terms of

  • players. The top 5 current players in terms of

games played are: Peter Duffy (309), Cam Gumbleton (197), Stu Scullin (188), Lachlan Quinn (188) and Andrew Peake (186). There were 15 players to play a senior game this year who have played more than 100. 6 of these played 3 or less matches. James Boon’s season of 24 catches and 2 stumpings ranks alongside some decent seasons recently from wicketkeepers. Jason Gumbleton (2013/14, 28 dismissals), Dylan Gillespie (2011/12, 25 dismissals) Gavin Brown (2009/10, 27 dismissals) Darren Stafrace (2009/10, 30 dismissals including an incredible 13 stumpings). After a run of 2 seasons where our most prized award was won by our Overseas players, home grown Lewis Oliver won the Club Champion at just 20 years of age, with a season that included: 329 runs, 21 wickets, 7 catches, a highest score

  • f 88 and 2 or more wickets on 7 occasions. A

great reward for Lewis, with the Oliver name joining some legendary names from the past such as the Youngs and Lalor families.

Tom Garside’s (borrowed) bat in honour of Philip Hughes “The Bear” Jimmy Jeffery waiting for his turn to bat in the Fourths Social Scene Social Committee this year was led by Duff with some help from a few others throughout the club. After a slowish start we got into the swing of things with a particular highlight being the 4th XI playing home games on Sunday, with a decent crowd of players recovering from the previous day’s play, coming down to Mentone to support the 4ths (and try not to be roped in to fill in). Trivia Night was another highlight this season run by Duff, with a great time had by all. The junior parents table won, led by John Bamfield, Paul Bailey, Andrew Murphy and Matt Gibbons. A good turnout from senior players for the traditional long weekend. The introduction of the Wheel, where players would regularly spin the wheel to see how many runs they made, was a welcome addition and interesting to see only 2 players – Jack Unwin and Andy Ware achieve this. Hearing AJ getting

  • ut for 0 chasing a score of 6, or of Norton J

Armstrong spinning again after getting 26, and landing on 92, was great fun. The dart board was brought back which saw some hard fought games at the end of play. There were plenty of good nights during the season, none more so than a late night before the Christmas break after a hot day in the field and a few beverages, turning up the next day to see Skinny sleeping in the rooms and finding out that he, AJ and Duff had stayed well past the midnight curfew. Speaking of Duff his 300th game saw a good number of people back at the club for a late night in November. Overall there was agreement there’s opportunity to do a lot more next season and we hope some more people come

board the social committee. The dart board was a popular addition to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday cricket days

JUNIORS The junior season this year was a lot of fun for all

  • involved. Unfortunately we didn’t have a great

season on field, with the Under 16s and 14s narrowly missing finals despite stringing some wins together late in the season. Both sides probably struggled a bit with numbers, often playing with 9 or 10 players due to players getting injured or being away at key times. Our Under 12s were a development team with a lot of new faces but if the spirit and camaraderie was anything to go by on Presentation night they have a lot of characters in the team who enjoyed their cricket. We didn’t have the biggest program in terms of numbers, and like most clubs we face challenges in terms of other sports and competing priorities, but with a team in each age group we are well placed to build further on this coming season. We now have a clear pathway set up from introductory cricket advertised through our local schools, all the way through to junior age groups and to senior grades. Stuart Mills and Dane Heverin ran our Milo in2cricket program on Friday nights. Both boys are to be commended for their efforts in braving the heat, rain, thunder and often even more challenging around twenty 5-8 year olds with boundless energy. We continue to link in with the local schools to advertise our program. The season concluded with a BBQ kindly run by parents Dan Casey and Nathan McColough and was a nice way to finish the 12 week program. We entered our first team in the Milo T20 Blast competition, a fixture, 16 over a side format that bridges the gap between Milo cricket on Fridays and Under 12 cricket. Playing with a soft ball, kids bat for 4 overs in pairs and bowl 2 overs each. Games run from 9am-10.45am

  • n

Saturday mornings and barring one wet morning, we got through some fine conditions to teach the boys the basic match day skills around field placements, running between the wickets, and unfortunately the dreaded “ramp-shot” that has made its way from T20 television to our kids. Feedback from the parents was great and we will continue next season with potentially more teams. We had some great achievements through the season: Luke Weeks, Liam Casey, Anu Hariram and Noah McColough attended the Big Bash derby between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, with the opportunity to be out on the ground with the

  • players. Mentone was selected as one of only 8

clubs to be involved with this. Jake Newman attended the Ponting Foundation’s biggest game of cricket fundraiser. Harry Campbell won a cricket bat through a competition with Gray Nicholls. Cam Duffy (Oakleigh) and Eddy McGarry (Moorabbin) represented Oakleigh and Moorabbin in the JG Craig (Hatch) competition. Both also represented Mentone as umpires in the SECA finals earning some pocket money along the way. Just recently, the following players were invited to the SECA Development Squad training: Under 18s: Campbell Tedde, Stuart Mills & Josh Freney Under 16s: Cam Duffy & Eddy McGarry Under 15s: James Banfield & Harry Skadiang Under 14s: Dale Haycroft & Lewis McLachlan Congrats to all award winners and in particular Campbell Tedde (Most Runs in juniors), Cameron Duffy (Most Wickets in juniors), Lewis McLachlan (Andrew Jones Most Improved Junior) and Eddy McGarry (Doug Lewis Most Determined Junior). Through our alignment with the Melbourne Renegades all registered players received a 2 game membership to the Renegades matches in the KFC Big Bash. On the playing front, many of our Under 16s, and some Under 14’s took part in the senior sides and we encourage that to continue. Cam Duffy playing his first season of Under 16’s, finished 2nd in our Senior Best & Fairest, the Hogben Medal. A remarkable achievement. Campbell Tedde, Eddy McGarry and James Banfield played in Senior Semi Finals that are always a great experience. Together with Senior Coach Peter Duffy and our Senior Captains we remain united as a group that our improvement as a club lies in the development of our junior players and we’ll continue to focus here. Will Hale ran our Academy sessions and was available to all players for personal one on one coaching which some took up. It was pleasing to see the improvement shown by those who did make themselves available to be coached. In some great news we can announce that Brian Quinn has volunteered to fill the vacant Junior Coordinator role that is so crucial to our club. Having served this role twice for a total of 16 seasons, it is a significant gain for the club to have one of the best junior administrators in the area, to be running our junior program again. Huge thanks to Brian who has done his time, twice, but is so passionate about our club and its future talent that he is helping again.

My thanks to the Parents who were on hand to help the kids each week on game day. There’s always room for more involvement and a couple

  • f the ideas we are hoping to complete next

season include:  Establishing a junior committee with representation from all age groups  Dedicated social event for Junior parents  Every junior player assigned a Senior mentor  Pre-Season Development coaching If you are able to assist with any of these please let me know. Junior cricket faces big challenges around scheduling of matches with grounds on Friday nights the major challenge. I encourage you to continue to have your voices heard and feedback through myself or a member of the committee your preferences around match days, times, venues and formats. The game of cricket relies on participation at junior levels and parents continued support; we seek to act in your best interests as a club and therefore ask for your help on this. I look forward to seeing you all again next season. Vale – Malcolm Watson Sadly, on Easter Thursday we received news that

  • ur beloved scorer, Life Member and Hall of

Famer Malcolm Watson had passed away. Malcolm was a former player, committee member, practice captain, registration secretary and served 3 seasons as FDCA Delegate. These days he has run the scoreboard at both cricket and footy, and been a regular at the club every Thursday and Saturday. His contribution and presence at the club has been significant, and we mourn his passing as a loss to the cricket club as many have commented, he was always on hand for a quick comment or thumbs up and always keen for a couple of drinks watching the cricket. His funeral was a great celebration of his life with fellow Hall of Fame members Mick Eden and Peter Duffy, along with Football Club identity Matt Beasley, speaking of Mal’s fondness for both Mentone CC and St Bedes Mentone AFC, his dislike for politicians and his great humour. Vale We would also like to pass on our condolences and thoughts to the Collins family on the passing

  • f Mona Collins, mother to Brett and Matt and

prominent volunteer at the St Bedes Mentone Tigers AFC and at Mentone CC when Brett was playing juniors. It was also with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Tim Russell, a member of our Fifth XI this season, who passed away after a battle with cancer last week. Tim played a couple of matches in our 1 day side as a mate of our Beauy contingent and we extend our thoughts to the family on this tragic passing of a man so young.
