  2. OEWD’s HealthCare Academy Overview  The HealthCare Academy (HCA) launched in January, 2010 falls under OEWD’s sector strategy and is designed to improve the responsiveness of the workforce system to meet the demands of the growing industry.  The healthcare industry and healthcare occupations have been identified both nationally and locally as a priority for workforce investment for the following reasons:  Increasing demand for new and existing employees to enter and advance in the workforce due to replacement of retirees and an aging population  Skills development opportunities (as new technology evolves)  Enhanced treatment options (evolving service delivery options)  Local and federal healthcare initiatives (as Obamacare)  Because the healthcare sector encompasses occupations in such a wide variety of settings and requires various levels of education and skill, it presents excellent opportunities for a broad spectrum of local jobseekers. 2
