  5. Process for Generating Recommendations 5 • HSR Workforce Taskforce planned and moderated the conference • Tim Carey and Nir Menachemi, Education Council • Francis Chesley and Harry Kwon, AHRQ • Joe Selby and Jean Slutsky, PCORI • Claire Gibbons, RWJF • October 2016: conference of experts and key stakeholders to develop recommendations through workgroup discussions • December 2016: online consensus building activity to refine and clarify proposed recommendations • January 2017: Edited for clarity, removed duplication, finalized recommendations for publication and dissemination

  6. Overarching Areas of Recommendations 6 1. Ensure a diverse workforce to answer priority questions about health and health care 2. Maximize the impact of health services research 3. Monitor the health services workforce and how it changes over time

  7. #1: Ensure a Diverse Workforce… 7 • Expand awareness of career options in HSR to diversify the pipeline and ensure high quality, skilled researchers • Move beyond HSR to learn from other fields, disciplines, and stakeholders to inform the training of health services and policy researchers and to support the production, translation, and dissemination of HSR • Incorporate experiential learning into the training of health services researchers throughout their careers, especially opportunities for HSR trainees to learn and work in non-academic settings

  8. #2: Maximize the impact of HSR 8 • Support the diffusion of data and methods to ensure high quality research and support the training needs of health services researchers working in diverse sectors • Broaden health services researchers’ dissemination skillset to prepare them for multi-sectoral career paths • Support dissemination as an integral part of research conduct • Involve stakeholders throughout the research lifecycle (conceptualization, funding, conduct, and dissemination)

  9. #3: Monitor the HSR workforce & how it changes 9 • Inform the field’s efforts to assess its effectiveness in addressing priority health and healthcare issues across sectors • Monitor and identify new and emerging areas of HSR and support their inclusion into training and research

  10. Next Steps 10 AcademyHealth will focus on the following tactics to implement the recommendations: • Develop and confirm metrics of interest to measure changes in the HSR workforce and design a system to allow for the routine monitoring of the HSR workforce in relation to size, composition, and other relevant characteristics. • Develop a handful of diverse but illustrative “career trajectories” of health services and policy researchers and use these for promotional purposes • Promote interdisciplinary learning experiences that integrate social determinants of health, population health, health policy and dissemination of evidence-based health information leading to informed health policy. • Provide students and trainees with access to a variety of experiential internship/ fellowship opportunities to gain broader exposure to different areas of healthcare
