What is “The World Café?”

“The World Café is … an easy-to-use method for creating a living network of collaborative dialogue around questions that matter to the real-life situations of your organization or community. The World Café is based on the assumption that people already have within them the wisdom and creativity to confront even the most difficult challenges. Given the appropriate context and focus, it is possible for participants to access and use this deeper knowledge about what’s important.”

The World Café: A Resource Guide for Hosting Conversations that Matter

How does “The World Café” work?

  • 1. Identify a volunteer at your table to be the “Table Host.”
  • 2. Discuss the World Café question for 10 minutes.
  • 3. Be creative! Feel free to use words, pictures, graphs and diagrams to

record your thoughts. You may write on the table cloth! (Permanent markers are provided to make sure your thoughts remain forever!)

  • 4. When time is called, move to another table and repeat Steps 2 and 3.

thoughts/ opinions of those who were there before you.

  • 6. Return to your original table – read and discuss the other group’s

responses.

  • 7. If time permits, be prepared to share the essence of your discussion

with the whole group.

Question:

How does anything we’ve talked about today connect to the work you’re doing on your campus? What actions might you need to take?
