NSERC AT A GLANCE Total Budget 2013-14 Priorities $1.07 billion People Attract and retain the best students and researchers in Canada by supporting more than 30,000 students and postdoctoral fellows. Discovery Enable Canadian scientists and engineers to become global leaders in their fields by funding more than 11,000 professors for their research programs. Innovation Increase Canada’s prosperity by building connections and supporting the application of research by funding research projects with over 2,600 Canadian companies. 3

NSERC INVESTMENTS • NSERC’s total investment in Forestry and Wood Products Research and in Natural Resources and Energy was $26.8M and $158.9M, respectively (2013-14). • Several large-scale ongoing NSERC-funded initiatives: • NSERC Bioconversion Network (2008-2015) • NSERC Biomaterials and Chemicals Network (2013-2016) • NSERC Green Fibre Network (2010-2015) • BioFuelNet Canada (2012-2017) 4

  8. NSERC’S PARTNERSHIP OPTIONS • NSERC has a suite of partnership and funding opportunities. • Three will be discussed:  Engage Grant  Applied Research and Development Grant (Level 1)  Collaborative Research and Development Grant 8

  9. A GOOD FIRST STEP… • New partnership Engage Grant • Company driven problem ( University ) • 6 month project • Up to $25K from NSERC Applied Research & • No company cash Development Grant • Company owns the IP (College) • No application deadline • 4-6 week turnaround 9
