  3. State Board of Education’s Mission FUTURE-READY STUDENTS FOR THE 21 ST CENTURY Every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the 21 st century.

  4. It is the expectation of the Winston- Salem/Forsyth County Schools that all students graduate college or College and career ready by engaging in Career Ready rigorous and relevant classwork and completing a four year course of study that prepares them for college or work after high school.

  5. Future – Ready Core Course of Study Course and Credit Requirements

  6.  4 English  4 math  4 social studies  4 science  2 PE/Health/LMS Future-Ready  2 electives (electives must be any combination of Career Core Course of Technical Education, Arts Education or Second Language) Study  2 additional electives ( from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area)  Total = 22 credits

  7.  Students and parents should note that while 22 credits are required for graduation, you will have up to 32 credit opportunities. Credit Opportunities  Students are encouraged to explore areas of interest or courses that will enhance their postsecondary plans.

  8.  WS/FCS began using a 10-point grading scale for all students in 2015-16. 90-100 A 10 point grading 80-89 B scale 70-79 C 60-69 D Below 60 F

  9.  Courses are offered at the regular, honors, seminar, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) levels  Course weights for all students have changed as the Course Weights state implemented a new system.  Honors — receives .5 additional quality point (previously 1)  AP/IB — receives 1 additional quality point (previously 2)  Dual enrollment/College courses receive 1 additional quality point (no change)

  10.  All high schools use a modified block schedule that consists of four periods a day.  All classes are primarily 90 minutes. Student  Some classes are A/B day classes that last all year while Schedules others are block classes that last one semester.  During the registration period, students request courses. Student schedules are finalized during the summer and made available at Open House.

  11.  Assignment Principles are applied for English, math, science, and social studies courses  Based on most recent End of Grade, End of Course WS/FC Schools exam scores Course  For rising 9 th graders, most recent exam scores are 7 th Assignment grade EOG scores Principles  Assigned courses and levels will be indicated on student registration cards  Assignment in honors courses is Levels 4 and 5

  12.  English I - Regular, Honors, Honors Seminar Future-Ready  English II – Regular, Honors, Honors Seminar Core English  English III and English IV Regular, Honors, Honors Seminar, Advanced Placement

  13.  Earth/Environmental (HN)  Biology (HN and HN Seminar) – required for Biotechnology and Health Science majors Future-Ready Core  A physical science (e.g. Chemistry) Science  One additional science (e.g. Anatomy, Physics, Global Science Issues, Advanced Placement Science)

  14.  World History – Regular, Honors, Honors Seminar, Advanced Placement  Civics Literacy Future-Ready Core  American History Social Studies  Economics and Personal Finance (Levels include regular, honors, seminar, AP, and IB)

  15.  Math 1, Math 2(HN)  Math 3(HN) Future-Ready  And a fourth math course to be aligned with the student's Core after high school plans (e.g. college or work). Math Math 4(HN), Discrete Math for Computer Science, Pre-Calculus HN, AP Stats, AP Calculus AB &BC)

  16.  Students must complete four elective credits to satisfy WS/FCS graduation requirements.  2 electives must be any combination of Career Technical Education, Arts Education or Second Electives Language and  2 additional electives ( from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area)

  17.  Biotechnology Major – Biotechnology 1 HN  Health Science Major – Biomedical Technology 1 HN  Digital Design and Animation – Digital Design and Animation 1 STEM Electives  Digital Media – Digital Design Animation 1  Engineering – Engineering Essentials (Foundation of Math 1, some Math 1) or Intro to Engineering Design (Math 1 co-req with 8 th grade math A or B)

  18.  Students may select from a range of courses in this area including Band, Chorus, Dance, Orchestra, Theater Arts, and Visual Arts.  Levels are beginning, intermediate, proficient, and advanced  Students may receive honors credit up to four times per Arts area (e.g. proficient and advanced)  Band 2 Int. 2 or 3 years of middle school Band Arts Education  Orchestra 2 Int. 2 or 3 years of middle school Orchestra  Chorus 2 Int. 2 or 3 years of middle school Chorus  There are beginner’s sections of each music course for those who have some musical background but did not have at least 2 years of school instruction = Band 1, Chorus 1, Orches. 1

  19.  Students seeking to satisfy college admissions requirements must complete two units of a second language.  Second Language offerings include, Chinese and Japanese (at the Career Center), French, Latin, Spanish, Second or and Spanish for Native Speakers Foreign  Students may continue in the second language Language sequence through graduation  Students who have three years of foreign language and receive HS credit for the first language course exp. Spanish 1, French 1, may register for the second level course

  20.  Students interested in developing leadership skills may consider taking JROTC courses.  JROTC 1 – can meet the graduation requirement for PE Army JROTC 2 and Life Skills  Students who enroll in JROTC 1 as an elective should choose PE 1 and Health on their registration card (not Life Skills)

  21.  Newspaper HN  Yearbook HN  Creative Writing/Intro to Composition Other Electives  ACT/SAT Preparation  Art for Engineers – prereq. Middle School Art OR IED, DDA1 1 st semester

  22.  Biotechnology 1 HN – Biomedical Technology 1 HN  Biomedical Technology 1HN – Biotechnology 1 HN  Digital Design and Animation 1 – Digital Design and Animation 2 2 nd STEM  Intro to Engineering Design – Computer Integrated Manufacturing courses  Computer Science Principles AP – prereq. Math 2 and IED, DDA1 1 st semester * Math 1 Engineering students are strongly encouraged to take ONLY ONE STEM course freshman year
