  2. This presentation is very important! Your 100% attention is needed to get this done in a timely manner and to make sure your questions are answered. If you don’t schedule correctly the responsibility is YOURS!

  3. Items you should have with you: ◼ A white Course Selection Guide Booklet. ◼ A copy of your unofficial transcript which details the classes you have taken. ◼ A yellow scheduling sheet for 11 th /juniors and blue scheduling sheet for 12 th /seniors that you will be filling out and using to make your requests for next year.

  4. Lets talk Grad Requirements: English Language Arts (ELA)- one credit each year 4 Mathematics- Must have Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Senior Math. Mathematics must be taken all 4 years 4 Fine Arts /Career Tech Education – Visual/Performing/Applied Arts (VPAA) 1 Social Studies – Must have World History/Geography- one credit, U.S. History- one credit, Economics- ½ credit, Government- ½ credit 3 Science- Must have Biology- one credit, Chemistry, Earth Science or 3 Physics- one credit and an additional science Physical Education 0.5 Health (M010) 0.5 2.0 credits toward World Languages 2.0 Electives- 4.0 Required Credits 22 Total Possible Credits 24

What is a Fine Arts /Career Tech Education- Visual Performing Applied Arts Class?? ◼ Examples of classes that fulfill the 1 credit Fine Arts / VPAA requirement: ⚫ Any Art Class, Band, Choir, Theatre ⚫ Speech Communications I, II ⚫ Journalism I, II ⚫ Foods and Nutrition ⚫ Most Business Classes ⚫ Auto, Machine Shop, Design Engineering ⚫ AVID ⚫ Etc …. *All courses with a “V” code in Course Selection Guide

  6. ENGLISH: ◼ YOU MUST TAKE ENGLISH IN YOUR JUNIOR and SENIOR YEAR – 4 Credits Required ⚫ English 11 / English 12 - (1 CR) OR ⚫ AP English Language & Composition(11) or AP English Literature & Composition(12) – (1CR)

  7. ENGLISH cont’d: ◼ If you are in the EL program- See your EL teacher for assistance with next year’s selections . ◼ If you are in IEP or Co-taught English, check with your caseload teacher.

  8. SOCIAL STUDIES: ◼ 3 Credits required for graduation ⚫ US History (1 CR) AP US History ⚫ World History/Geography (1 CR) AP World History ⚫ US Government (.5 CR) AP Government (1 CR) ⚫ Economics (.5 CR) AP Macro-Economics or AP Micro-Economics

  9. SCIENCE: ◼ 3 Credits required for graduation ⚫ Biology (1 CR) ⚫ Chemistry, Earth Science or Physics (1 CR) ⚫ Additional Science- Physical Science, Environmental Science, Physiology, Medical Health Science or any other Science class ( 1 CR)

  10. MATHEMATICS: ◼ YOU MUST TAKE MATH IN YOUR JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEAR – 4 Credits Required Required Math Classes include: Geometry, Algebra I, AND Algebra II, Keep in mind, you MUST take a Math or Math Related course your senior year. *See Course Booklet for “M” codes.*

  11. MATH cont’d ◼ It all depends on what you have taken so far……. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TAKEN AND PASSED BOTH SEMESTERS of GEOMETRY, ALGEBRA I , and ALGEBRA II . Most colleges don’t accept the math related classes as a math class for core classes. If the college requires you to have 4 years of math you must take a class under the Math Curriculum.

  12. Did you meet your PE and Health requirements? ◼ Any PE class (1/2 credit) and Health (only M010, will count) (1/2 credit) are also requirements . ◼ If you have not taken one of these classes yet, you should schedule it now! ◼ Flex for PE Credit- Marching Band-2 years or School Sport- 2 seasons for Flex Student must fill out form, get signed and turn form ◼ into the counseling office when completed.

  13. What about Foreign Language? ◼ 2 credits in the same language required- Colleges would like 2 years of a foreign language as a core class. ◼ May take 1 credit and then Flex the 2 nd credit by taking an extra 1 credit of a VPAA credit. (You must fill out and turn in a flex form to your counselor. )

  14. What is an elective? ◼ An elective is ANY class you take after you have fulfilled the GRADUATION REQUIREMENT . For example: Psychology is an elective Algebra is NOT AN ELECTIVE

  15. Failed Courses: ◼ You can also re-schedule any failed REQUIRED courses. ⚫ For example: If you failed US History A and have not yet retaken it, you should put it on your schedule form. REFER TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO SEE IF YOU HAVE FAILED ANY REQUIRED COURSES.

  16. Failed Courses Cont’d ◼ Credit Recovery Options- ⚫ If you have failed any core courses, start thinking about how and when you will recover the missing credit. ◼ Credit Recovery- after school, offered each semester ◼ Summer School SEE YOUR COUNSELOR to discuss your options.

  17. Alternate Classes ◼ You cannot be guaranteed any of the classes you request. ◼ Choose 4 alternates, additional classes, to make sure you have a full schedule. Credits MUST ADD UP TO AT LEAST 6.0 !

  18. Shared Time- ◼ Shared Time classes are courses that focus on a specific vocation or career track. That is, they prepare you for a specific job field. ◼ Some courses are offered here at Utica, others offered at Ford, IKE, and Stevenson. Travel may be required usually during the lunch hour. ◼ Examples: Auto, Machine Shop, CTE Welding, CTE Visual Technology, Future Educators etc …

  19. Co-op/School-to-Work Program ◼ Apply as junior or senior to work at a job to gain experience, learn as you work and receive high school credit and a grade. ◼ You must have a 2.0 or higher GPA, good attendance, no discipline record, and your own transportation. ◼ Pick up a form today for the application process. ◼ See Mrs. Lelito in the Career Center to return your application packet or for questions.

  20. Year Long, AP, Accelerated, and Honors Courses ◼ The selections you make are what will determine your schedule for next year. ⚫ It is possible that some advanced and year long classes may conflict. ◼ Be aware that some of these courses require summer work. ◼ Counselors will NOT be able change your schedule in the Fall.

  21. What classes do you take? ◼ Use your transcript and back of your schedule form to check off the classes you have passed. ◼ Classes that are left over are the ones you will need to fit in before you are able to graduate.

  22. Naviance ◼ After you have selected your schedule, you will need to log into Naviance and update your classes, as well, under Courses.

  23. Take the schedule home….. Look through the course booklet to pick your electives. You must select a total of AT LEAST 4 credits. (Core, elective and alternates)

  24. It is YOUR Responsibility to: Bring back your COMPLETED schedule or your counselor will choose a schedule for you! All schedules are due to your social studies teacher on or before Friday, March 20th.

  25. What does “Completed” mean? ◼ Your schedule is complete if: ⚫ You have requested the appropriate number of classes and alternates. ⚫ Your schedule is signed by you and a parent/guardian. ⚫ You have taken a picture of your schedule.
