Google Apps for Education in your classroom

Benefits:

  • There are many

benefits of having G.A.F.E. in your classroom

  • We will go over

those in a minute Negatives:

  • Privacy Aspect
  • Not Age

Appropriate for some Grades

  • Debate about using

technology for student’s education “24/7”

4

* We will talk about the privacy aspect further on

Why should you implement G.A.F.E. into your classrooms?

5

  • Technology is becoming more prominent in

the modern era (especially with students)

  • Its how students are brought up
  • Involved what they do in their spare time
  • How they communicate between one another
  • How they find information to complete their

assignments

“Society is progressing with technology, so why shouldn’t your classroom?” - Joshua H.

SLIDE 6

Why should you implement G.A.F.E. into your classrooms?

6

  • It shows students how they can use their

devices for educational purposes

  • It can create a better communication system

between teacher-student and teacher-parents as well

  • Keeps students organized - No more “leaving

homework at home”

  • Allows students to collaborate more

effectively (can be done from anywhere)

Why should you implement G.A.F.E. into your classrooms?

7

  • Turn your classroom into an

environmentally efficient classroom: here are some of the things you can do with G.A.F.E. in your classroom

  • Store data online
  • Hand out assignments
  • Students hand in assignments
  • Mark Assignments
  • Hand Assignments Back
  • Store Grades online
  • And so much more…(look on my blog)

How much paper do you think is used in a “20 student classroom in one year?”

Side Question:

slide-9
SLIDE 9

~25,000 Pieces of Paper

9

Some Math:

  • A Tree makes 16.67 Reams of Paper
  • In a school full of 50 teachers

thats:

  • 1,250,000 Sheets of Paper
  • 50,000 Pounds of Paper
  • ~150 Trees/school/year

That's a lot of trees you can save from using a paperless classroom

slide-10
SLIDE 10

According to Stats Canada, there are approximately 15,500 Schools in Canada. This means that there is about 5.3 Million students in Public Schools”

10

Therefore:

  • ~ 265,000

Classrooms

  • ~6,625,000,000

Pieces of Paper

slide-11
SLIDE 11

In Canada, how many trees do you think are used solely for Public School Paper?”

Side Question:

slide-12
SLIDE 12

~794,841 Trees/Year in Canada

12

That's only for educational purposes... 15-20 square kilometers of trees About the size of Victoria worth of trees...and that's just paper in school

Now Back to... Google Apps for Education

14

The Most ‘Benefi ficial’ Apps that you can use in your classroom : (in my opinion)

  • Google Calendar
  • Google Documents
  • Google Slides
  • Google Classroom
  • Google Forms
slide-15
SLIDE 15

Google Documents & Google Slides

  • Easily accessed from

anywhere

  • Enhances Collaboration

between Students (more group projects)

  • Teachers can access the

document to check student progress + comment

15

  • Teachers can see

the group participants and see how much they have contributed

  • You can hand these

in directly to Google Classroom

  • Once an

assignment is handed in, the student cannot change any of the content

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Google Classroom

  • It is a platform

where teachers create their own virtual classroom to share important information, create a dropbox for assignments, and hand back assignments

  • Allows teachers

to be more effective - everything is in

  • ne spot (no

need to carry around a 20lb box full of papers and assignments

  • You can put

everything

  • nline - allows

students to check here for missed assignments

  • Keeps you
  • rganized as a

teacher

16

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Google Classroom

  • Parents can

also join the Google Classroom - which is great for classes where students are too young

17

  • Paperless

environment *hint* *hint* *nudge* *nudge*

  • It is user

friendly

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Google Calendar

  • Google

Calendar is incorporated with G.A.F.E. but works especially well with Google Classroom

  • Easy to attach

to your Google Classroom (in fact, it's already done)

  • Works very well

to organize your classroom but also your personal life

  • Just make sure

these are on separate

  • calendars
  • You can link

assignments and drop boxes to the due date

  • n your calendar
  • Schedule

meetings with parents easily

Google Apps For Education Privacy

G.A.F.E. privacy is almost nonexistent for students (or...anyone) Content is stored in the USA and can be accessed or sold Basically, Districts are handing over every student's information to the States

  • Alias names not

available

  • They don’t

delete information (Coquitlam backed out of G.A.F.E.)

  • Need Consent

Why should you implement G.A.F.E. into your classrooms?

21

“Society is progressing with technology, so

why shouldn’t your classroom?” - Joshua H.

  • Well...you should implement some aspect of

technology like G.A.F.E. into your classroom

  • But there are more private ways to do it
  • Alternatives include: Wordpress, Microsoft

365 (they delete information), etc.
