  7. Portion of Lightning Detected by ENTLN!

  8. Dark Lightning

  9. 7:05am EST – Velocities with cell 03 have intensified once more over Chilton County and show a clear mesocylone (Still designated 408). No TVS Signature is given but this coincides with a tornado report near Jemison which is later confirmed by NWS as an EF-0 with a path length of 2.55 miles.

  10. Minor Whirlwind

  11. From HGX WFO from August 25 to August 27 2017 150 tornado warnings issued (#49 to #199) 31 tornadoes reported 126 tornado warnings with no tornado reports within polygon 25 warning polygons with tornado reports Several warnings and tornado reports indicate no radar signature and times in question Several warnings and reports involve waterspout sightings

  12. From EYX, JAX, MFL, MLB, TBW from Sept 10 to Sept 11 2017 93 tornado warnings issued 18 tornadoes reported 6 w/o warning

  13. Lans Rothfusz National Severe Storms Lab Challenges of Current Warning System Warning Polygons are Blunt Instruments

  14. Conclusions ➢ Velocity Couplets are radar signatures, NOT Tornadoes! ➢ Not all lightning arrays are equal ➢ Minimal Mesocyclone Signatures – MDA Ranking <=6 ➢ Total Sferics is a useful discriminate variable Benefits increased significantly with the assumption that LMS could not only improve average lead time, but could result in measurable improvements in the probability that warnings would be issued for severe weather outbreaks.

  15. 20% reduction in fatalities 26% reduction in injuries
