• Grounded in its own Constitution which aims to ‘build peace in the minds of men and women
• Education 2030 Agenda and Framework for Action, notably Target 4.7 of the Sustainable

Development Agenda

• Global citizenship education (GCED) is now one of the strategic areas of work for UNESCO’s

Education Programme

• One of the three priorities of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative (GEFI)

launched in September 2012.

• UNESCO is taking the technical leadership and overall coordination of initiatives related to

global citizenship education

• UNESCO Beirut Office has been very active working on promoting GCED in policies, learning

content, and practices.

What is Global Citizenship Education?

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) seeks to provide young citizens with the ability to face and solve global problems, and to contribute proactively to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, and safe world.

Competencies of Global Citizenship Education?

Basic competencies for GCED should include: 1) Knowledge and awareness of specific global issues and trends, knowledge and respect of universal values such as peace, human rights, democracy, justice, non-discrimination, diversity and tolerance; 2) Cognitive skills for critical and creative thinking, problem solving and decision-making; 3) Non-cognitive skills such as empathy, openness to others’ experiences and approaches, interpersonal skills, the capacity to network and interact with persons of different origins and backgrounds; 4) Behavioral capacity to adopt and participate in proactive actions
