  8. You are the first Gillings students to attend orientation during a pandemic, but not the first UNC- Chapel Hill students to do so.

Graham dies UNC-CH PRESIDENT DIES OF PNEUMONIA DUE TO INFLUENZA “There are thirty cases in the hospital,” Graham wrote back to the parent on Oct. 19. “This shows a steady decrease from the maximum of about one hundred and thirty. There are twenty in the convalescent building. These men are virtually well; they are simply being detained there as a precaution.”

  11. When the pandemic finally began to wane in the spring of 1919, more than 500 UNC students had been treated in the infirmary and seven people, including three students, had died as a result of complications of the illness.

  12. The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 set in motion the steps that led to public health today, creating local organizations, improved record keeping, focus on conditions that lead to ill health and keeping people healthy.

  15. Getting to the Gillings School Chapel Hill Transit Service changes begin August 3 10 person maximum per bus Added buses to help limit wait times Multiple changes to routes and streets – be sure to review their website for more info.

  16. You’ve ARRIVED – NOW WHAT? Follow the signs – major building entrances are two way. Enter on One Card reader side. Exit on opposite side – just follow the signs. Elevators are one person at a time – take the stairs if you can. Most hallways are designated as two way. Follow the signs.

  19. Staying safe and healthy at the Gillings School Extra masks are available at building entrances. At your classroom, please take a wipe and clean your desk surface. Hand sanitizer is stationed at every classroom. Please use as you are entering and exiting class or the building. Campus will deliver Care Packs next week. Class Attendance Policy • Check your syllabi for the class attendance policy. • Request for University Approved Absences form via the UNC Dean of Student Office • Under the Class Attendance Policy a student can request an absence be University approved by the Office of the Dean of Students for a significant health condition and/or personal/family emergency. Documentation is typically required for a request to be evaluated and may include a letter from a treatment provider indicating absences were medically necessary (for students not using Campus Health seeing a provider and documentation would be suggested).
