  2. BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF GROUND WATER Jacqueline GIALLO CEO j.giallo@germesa.fr GERME S.A. – Marseille FRANCE Malta Water Week, March 2015

  3. GERME S.A. environmental expertise Since 1979 GERME is involved in environment protection, and develops biological products and processes for air, soils and water quality improvement. Among others its expertise is related to: • Drinking water treatment • Waste water treatment • Lakes, ground water or other fresh water reservoirs decontamination or quality improvement • Water resources management and water saving technology • Soils bio remediation (hydrocarbons, chlorinated compounds, toxic metals, … removal) • Air depollution • Agro-food or industrial waste recovery

  4. GERME S.A. activities GERME activities diversify in R&D Services and Production. GERME methodology consists of: • Feasibility study, • On-site pilot plant development, • Assistance in setting up the water treatment unit, • Needed biological consumables supply, • Process monitoring.

  5. Biological treatment principle Biotreatment consists of using specific microorganisms able to degrade or remove targeted pollutants. Microorganisms are screened in our laboratory from natural ecosystems, they are not pathogenic according european directive 2000/54/CE and non GMO. GERME offers two alternatives for groundwater biotreatment: - in situ technology - ex situ technology

  6. In situ biotreatment of ground water polluted by chlorinated compounds POLLUTING COMPOUNDS Vinyl Chloride Monomer Ethyl chloride Dichloroethylene Trans-12-Dichloroethylene Dichloro-11-ethane Cis-12-Dichloroethylene Chloroform 12-Dichloroethane 111-Trichloroethane Carbone tetrachloride 12-Dichloropropane Trichloroethylene 112-Trichloroethane Perchloroethylene Tetrachloroethane Pentachloroethane

  7. In situ biotreatment: mean annual chlorinated compounds of the ground water

  14. Other example of Ex situ biotreatment: Biotreatment with selected microorganisms of brakish ground water contaminated with phenolic compounds

  15. Targeted pollutants GERME provides water bioremediation products and technologies for removal of a wide range of pollutants: • Organic matter and fats, • Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, • Chloride organic compounds, • Detergents, • Ammonia, nitrogenous compounds, nitrates, • Polychlorobiphenyls, • Heavy metals, • Drugs, • ...

  16. GERME offers a wide range of biotechnological tools to preserve the natural environment
