WHAT IS GATE?

  • Gifted students my show outstanding talent or perform at high levels of

accomplishment when compared with others of the same age, experience, or environment.

  • Gifted students may show a high performance capability in intellectual,

creative, and/or artistic areas, may possess and unusual leadership capacity, and may excel in specific academic fields.

  • Outstanding talents and abilities are present in children and youth from

all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.

THE SAME SIZE FITS ALL?

  • No two students are alike
  • No two children learn in identical ways
  • An enriched environment for one student is not

necessarily an enriched environment for another

  • Children should be taught to think for themselves

DIFFERENTIATION

Differentiation is not about giving more work. It is about adjusting the work to meet the needs of the learner.

Traditional Classrooms Pico Classrooms

  • Student differences are

masked or seen as problematic

  • Assessment is only given

at the end of learning to see “who got it”

  • A relatively narrow

sense of intelligence prevails

  • A single definition of

excellence exists

  • Student differences are

studied as a basis for planning

  • Assessment is ongoing

and diagnostic to understand how to adjust instruction

  • Focus on multiple forms
  • f intelligence
  • Excellence is also

identified in growth from the starting point
