Ministry of Education – Early Years Division
- Oversee the delivery of full-day early learning programs for four-and-five year

- Support the transition of the four-and-five year olds to the Ministry Education
- Work to enhance and stabilize existing child care and other programs for

Full-day Early Learning Program
What we know…
- Kindergarten is an optional program
- Both boards will align Kindergarten
registration in February
- Different models of JK/SK cannot
be offered in one school
- The full-day program will be offered
during the core hours of the day e.g.: 9:00 – 3:30 pm during the school year
- That the DPCDSB will hold a lottery,
if the demand is too high
- Spring 2010 – a new full-day early
learning curriculum will be announced
What we don’t know…
- Structure of the day e.g.:
who will supervise the children during lunch time, if there is a nap time etc.
- Care options for children
during the summer, school breaks, PA days etc.
Staffing Full-day Early Learning Program
What we do know… Team teaching model; ECE and Elementary teacher 1:13 ratio, average class size of 26 children What we don’t know... ECE salary Hours for ECE’s If ECE’s in the school system are eligible for wage subsidies Who will provide care for the children during school breaks, PA days and holidays
Extended Day Program
What we know…
- Boards are expected to
provide an extended day program e.g.: 7:30 – 9:00 am and 3:30 – 6:00 pm where there is sufficient enrolment
- The program will be staffed by
ECE’s
- The extended day program is:
Optional for families Paid for by parent fees Subsidized for some families Offered during the school year

- What is sufficient enrolment?
- How the program will be administered
- How subsidies will be issued
