Hymn: #219 The Head that Once was Crowned with Thorns THE WORD—INSTRUCTION First Reading— Acts 24. 10-16 ESV

10 And when the governor [Felix] had nodded to him to speak, Paul

replied: “Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. 11 You can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, 12 and they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city. 13 Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. 14 But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, 15 having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. 16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Second Reading—

  • St. Matthew 10. 26-33 ESV

26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be

revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather

fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all

  • numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many
  • sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will

acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. P: This is the Word of the Lord. In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets. C: But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. [Hb. 1. 1,2] Sermon— Psalm 119.15, 23, 31, 46, 47, 51, 113, 114, 165 Faith Must Be Confessed

  • 1. Faith is the foundation of confession
  • 2. Confession is faith living itself out

[Silence for meditation] Catechism Review P: What is the Fourth Commandment? C: Honor your father and your mother. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them. P: What is the Fifth Commandment? C: You shall not murder. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. P: What is the Sixth Commandment? C: You shall not commit adultery. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other. THE APOSTLES’ CREED: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life  everlasting. Amen. Offering Stewardship Thought: Luke 14:19 “And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.'” The things of this world tempt us to cast aside the things of God. The things of this world demand our attention, time, finances, etc. But Jesus invites us to the feast – what could be more important than this gracious invitation? Today’s parable invites us to examine our own priorities and attempted excuses…and then to come home to the Lord who invites us in humble repentance. Offering Prayer after offerings are received:

O God, the Strength of the weak and the Comfort of those who suffer: In mercy, hear our prayer and grant to Your servants who are ill the help of Your power, that their sicknesses may be turned into health, and their sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Almighty God and gracious Father, in Your mercy look on those whose increasing years bring them weakness, anxiety, distress, or loneliness. Grant that they may always know care and respect, concern and

  • understanding. Grant them willing hearts to accept help and, as their

strength wanes, increase their faith with the constant assurance of Your love through Jesus Christ, their Savior. Amen Shed Your Holy Spirit upon Your people, O Lord, and make ready our hearts this day to hear and keep Your holy word that in the communion

word with all Your saints come to eternal blessedness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. C: Amen Lord of Life, You are the Truth that sets us free from sin and death. Help us to know the truth of the value that You give to all human life, and then enable us courageously and joyfully to speak that truth in love; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God. Amen Lord Jesus Christ before whom all in heaven and earth shall bow, grant courage to Your dear Christians that they may confess Your saving name in the face of any opposition from a world hostile to You and Your word. By Your Spirit strengthen us to be faithful and confess You boldly, knowing that You will confess Your own before the Father in heaven, with whom You and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God now and forever. Amen. Gracious Jesus, our Lord and our God, at this hour You bore our sins in Your own body on the tree so that we, being dead to sin, might live unto

  • righteousness. Have mercy upon us now and at the hour of our death,

and grant to us, Your servants, with all others who devoutly remember Your blessed Passion, a holy and peaceful life in this world and through Your grace eternal glory in the life to come, where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, You live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen. P: Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; for Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and

  • ever. Amen.

P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. [Psalm 103.1] P: The Lord bless us, defend us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting

TELL THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT JESUS RECEPTION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER: At Faith we offer Holy Communion to members in a separate brief service following Sunday morning services where it is not offered. Striving to confess and practice all that God has taught us in His Word, we offer the Blessed Sacrament to our own members and members of other congregations in fellowship with the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod as we express our unity of faith on the basis of all of God’s Word [1 Cor. 10.16-17].

PRAYER OF OUR COMMUNICANTS: O that to me also one of the Seraphim would bring the burning coal from the celestial fire, taking it in the tongs of the two testaments, and with the fire purge my unclean lips! But You, O Lord, in revelation of the mystery have come to us in the flesh. Do not send any deputy, nor any messenger, but You Yourself cleanse my conscience from my secret

  • sins. There is a cup, which You use to purify the hidden chambers of

the soul, a cup not of the old order, nor filled from a common vine. It is a new cup, brought down from heaven to earth, filled with wine pressed from the wondrous cluster, which hung in fleshly form upon the tree of the cross. With this wine, Lord Jesus, purify

  • ur senses, that we may adore You, and worship You. Amen.

[Ambrose of Milan c. 339-97]

SERVICE NOTES: Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men, him will I confess before My Father in heaven.” To confess Christ before men is to speak the truth openly about Who He is and what He has done to save us. It is to make known publicly our faith in Him who made the good confession before Pilate, and by Whose cross we are saved and reconciled to the Father. It is to say in faith what He has first said to us in His holy Word. Today we give God thanks that our Lutheran forefathers confessed the truth of Scripture with courage and clarity. We rejoice greatly in understanding the words of the Lord and in sharing the confession

  • f the true faith made in Augsburg. May the Holy Spirit grant us all

continually to fight the good fight of faith until Jesus returns.

THE 487TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE AUGSBURG CONFESSION

The Second Sunday After Trinity 25 June 2017 On 25 June 1530 Dr. Christian Beyer, representing the Lutheran princes, stands before Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, and representatives of the Roman Church and reads the Augsburg Confession, written by Luther’s co-worker Philip Melanchton with Luther’s supervision. Luther: “…if the truth were with us, if it becomes a private and personal matter, it is no longer truth, which is, wants to be, and should be altogether common to all” [XI, 431].
