Message on Facebook: Fire of an electric vehicle on the S16, Pians, 17.10.2017 A fire of an electric vehicle after an accident shortly before the entrance of the Pianner tunnel. The driver

  • f the electric vehicle crashed against concrete

bulkheads and was only slightly injured. The firefighting - which could only be done under heavy respiratory protection - was difficult as the vehicle repeatedly caught fire. It was only after cutting the power supply from the high-performance battery that made the fire fighters win and extinguish the fire. Since lithium batteries are used, the manufacturer recommends that crashed vehicles are left "quarantined" for 48 hours in order a restart of a fire can be extinguished. The Arlbergschnellstraße had to be closed for around 2 hours. The fire department Landeck was with 5 vehicles and 35 fire fighters on site.

Why do Lithium Batteries start to burn?

Set on fire by:

  • Mechanical damage
  • Short circuit
  • Overheating
  • Electro-chemical reaction

What is burned off:

  • Electrolyte
  • Aluminum foil
  • Metal oxides
  • Plastics

E-Vehicles: Outlook 2030

  • End of 2016, 10'724 electric vehicles were on the road in Switzerland. (0.24% of

PVs)

  • 3'525 more than last year. (+ 47%)
  • Due to the legislation and the current reports on diesel, a further increase has to

be expected.

  • The European Union estimates that in 2030 at least 15% of electric vehicles will

be on the road.

  • This would be about 1,000,000 electric vehicles in Switzerland.
