UL CERTIFICATION

UL Approval Means:

  • Quality
  • Endurance
  • Stability in operation
  • Fail-safe
  • Rigorous documentation
  • Meeting all possible eventualities
  • Customers’ confidence/Faith in the product
  • Proven manufacturer’s capability

Finally--- It defines

  • A World Class product
  • Organization’s capability

First in the world outside USA

Solutions

  • Preventive measures minimize or lessen fire occurrence; cannot

eliminate

  • Despite all preventive measures, fire takes place
  • Fire is an accident
  • Accidents take place due to negligence (ignorance/over-confidence)
  • Therefore, we need to have fire fighting systems to douse fire

What kind of Systems? DCP, CO2, Halon, Foam, Water tender?

  • 5 mm particle of water, if broken down to 100 micron size, number of particles are

125000 in water mist

  • Surface area of all 125000 particles collectively increases to 50 times
  • As a result, heat transfer is 50 times faster
  • Similarly, for 300 microns, we get 4560 particles.

& collective surface area is only 17 times more than 5 mm.

Surface Area Increase

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Water Mist Technology

  • Helps convert the DISADVANTAGES of water into ADVANTAGES
  • Its CRITICAL that the water droplets are of the right size(100-150

microns)

  • There is a constant flow of droplets of same size
  • The droplets are propelled at a high velocity into the seat of the fire at a

low working pressure

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Importance of droplets size

  • Small size droplets ( < 50 )
  • Optimal size droplets ( ~ 100 – 150 )
  • Large size droplets ( > 200 )

Small size droplets (< 50 )

Small size droplets cannot penetrate into the flame and are ineffective

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Large size droplets (> 200 )

Large size droplets mainly pass through the flame leaving a puddle behind(90% wastage)

This forms a steam blanket that suffocates the flame and prevents the

VIDHAN SOUDHA FIRE

Fire at Vidhana Soudha creates panic

  • Soudha. An accidental fire that caught both security personnel and legislators off guard

destroyed computers and furniture in the Internet server room of the Finance Department, located on the second floor of the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday. The police said that around 11.15 a.m., following an electric short circuit, fire broke out in room number 203-A, which houses the office of Deputy Secretary, Finance

  • Department. The room is located next to the chambers of the Minister for Cooperation

G.T. Deve Gowda. Computers, electrical and electronic gadgets, telephones, furniture and huge quantity of cables that were stored in the room were gutted. The walls and roof of the room were

  • charred. However, no one was injured. As thick smoke started billowing out of the room,

there was panic at the highly secured Vidhana Soudha for some time. The police closed the two gates on the second floor and prevented people from crowding near the room. Both the Houses of Legislature were in session when the incident took place. Joint Director of Fire Services Chengappa told The Hindu that electric short circuit

  • ccurred after water from a wash basin fell on the electrical equipment. The police and

Fire Service personnel at the Vidhana Soudha put out the fi re using portable extinguishers, adopting mist technology, he said.

Water Mist in Good Governance

  • Safety/Security of people
  • First 3-5 minutes are crucial in any fire situation
  • Urban firefighting is handicapped by traffic, distances, inaccessible lanes,

water shortages

  • Rural areas/small towns lack basic fire fighting capability
  • Public gatherings eg. Melas, stadiums, weddings, rallies etc. lack adequate fire

protection Portable water mist systems would be an ideal solution to these various situations-

  • Speed in responding to different fires
  • High efficiency –minimal water consumption and maximum fire fighting

capability

  • Environmentally friendly,ease in usage & portable
