  2. Profile of AFT • Roots in R & D. • Over 50 full-time top scientists developing cutting edge technology • Won Gold Medals for Best Innovations - Brussels 1999 (IGLA) ; Brussels 2000 (Helicopter Fire fighting System); Geneva 2000 (IGLA) • Commercial Launch of IGLA Firefighting System – Jan 2001 Awarded 1 st Merlion Award in Singapore Fire, Safety & Rescue Asia • Exhibition (November 2001) • Best Exhibit – Fire Australia 2002 – Brisbane ( June 2002)

  6. UL CERTIFICATION UL Approval Means: • Quality • Endurance • Stability in operation • Fail-safe • Rigorous documentation • Meeting all possible eventualities • Customers’ confidence/Faith in the product • Proven manufacturer’s capability Finally--- It defines • A World Class product First in the world outside USA • Organization’s capability A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  7. Solutions • Preventive measures minimize or lessen fire occurrence; cannot eliminate • Despite all preventive measures, fire takes place • Fire is an accident • Accidents take place due to negligence (ignorance/over-confidence) • Therefore, we need to have fire fighting systems to douse fire What kind of Systems? DCP, CO2, Halon, Foam, Water tender ? A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  8. Rapid Response Portable Water Mist Firefighting System T he “REVOLUTION” in the fire fighting technology.

  9. How to douse a fire? Fire Triangle Fuel (Starvation) Oxygen Heat (Smothering) (Cooling) A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  10. Conventional Fire Extinguishing Media • Water - Cooling • Inert Gases- Smothering • Foam- Smothering • Carbon Dioxide - Smothering • Dry Chemical Powders- Smothering

  11. Water Advantages • Easy availability • Lowest in cost • Good extinguishing capabilities • Eco friendly Disadvantages • Need large volumes • Lots of wastage • Collateral damage

  12. SRA Damage A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  13. Water Damage

  14. Surface Area Increase • 5 mm particle of water, if broken down to 100 micron size, number of particles are 125000 in water mist • Surface area of all 125000 particles collectively increases to 50 times • As a result, heat transfer is 50 times faster • Similarly, for 300 microns, we get 4560 particles. & collective surface area is only 17 times more than 5 mm. 15. Water Mist Technology • Helps convert the DISADVANTAGES of water into ADVANTAGES • Its CRITICAL that the water droplets are of the right size(100-150 microns) • There is a constant flow of droplets of same size • The droplets are propelled at a high velocity into the seat of the fire at a low working pressure

  16. Importance of droplets size - Small size droplets ( < 50 ) -Optimal size droplets ( ~ 100 – 150 ) - Large size droplets ( > 200 )

  17. Small size droplets (< 50 ) Small size droplets cannot penetrate into the flame and are ineffective A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  18. Large size droplets (> 200 ) Large size droplets mainly pass through the flame leaving a puddle behind(90% wastage)

  19. Lalbaugh Fire A A F F T T A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  20. Optimal size droplets (~ 100 to 150 ) Optimal size droplets penetrate into the flame and evaporate there (over 90% effectiveness)

  21. Optimal size droplets (~ 100 to 150 ) This forms a steam blanket that suffocates the flame and prevents the oxygen from coming in AFT System is the only system suitable for all types of fire and provides smothering and cooling effect simultaneously. American Shipping has banned CO2 on Board

  23. FLOW Velocity A de Laval nozzle, showing approximate flow velocity increasing from green to red in the direction of flow

  24. Velocity Temp Pressure Mach 1 at throat Diagram of a de Laval nozzle, showing flow velocity (v) increasing in the direction of flow, with decreases in temperature (t) and pressure (p). The Mach A A F F T T number (M) increases from subsonic, to sonic at the throat, to supersonic. A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H

  25. Underexpanded Ambient Overexpanded Grossly overexpanded If under or overexpanded then loss of efficiency occurs. Grossly overexpanded nozzles have improved efficiency, but the exhaust A A F F T T jet is unstable A d v a n c e d F i r e f i g h t i n g T e c h n o l o g y G m b H
