Adapting to Physical distancing, while saving the small businesses that are key to the Fells Point EXPERIENCE.

The charm of Fells Point lies in its local, independent small businesses. They shape a space that ofgers shopping, dining and activities without any “big box” intervention. These storefronts naturally mix with residential properties creating a true community. But they are in trouble and facing incredible hardship due to the recent health crisis our world is facing. They need a city-led efgort to provide a new outdoor environment to give them a chance to serve their community. While there are no guarantees that these businesses will make it through this hardship, a new outdoor environment will provide a safe space for them try to generate a sustainable revenue. This will bring people back to Fells Point to once again dine, shop and support our local businesses. Today, we can make changes that will improve the quality of life in Fells Point for residents and visitors not only now, but for many years to come. FELLS FORWARD represents better living and healthy commerce!

During the past decade, we have all witnessed the great eagerness to get outside with the re- emergence of rooftop decks, cafes with propane heaters & blankets, and garage doors open in good

  • weather. Physically distanced

tables and chairs with shaded areas are an attractive option for diners in good weather. With potted fmowers and landscaping, a safe and desirable environment is possible for Fells Point visitors. This is an opportunity to focus

  • n sustainable placemaking

with composting, recycling, and pop-up businesses that respond to the needs of the community. The fmowers and landscaping that defjne and beautify our seating areas can be merchandised and sold from attractive, re-purposed vehicles and vessels.

Outdoor furniture must be durable, easily foldable for storage, and securable during high winds. There are numerous afgordable bistro chairs and tables

  • available. There should be lots of

four-tops and some two- tops to accommodate households. There are opportunities to purchase ideal furniture from restaurants that will not be re-opening to keep costs down. Tall fjberglass planters with sandbags for stability can display colorful fmowers and be arranged with green shrubbery. These items, if creatively merchandised, can additionally be sold in Broadway Square. Local fmorists, nurseries, and Farmers Market vendors should be given the fjrst

  • pportunities to sell at these

locations.
