THE CANDLEMAS

This feast of the presentation of the Lord we also call Candlemas. As we commemorate Jesus presented in the temple by the ever-faithful Mary and Joseph, we recall the incarnation, the Christ- mas mystery and the bestowal of light to humankind. It has long been our Catholic custom to bless candles on this day, both candles for our own homes and especially those we will use throughout the liturgical year. What we remember, what we do, and what we hope to see is laid out and cele- brated in the prayer of the blessing of the candles that began our liturgy today. Today is also a special day for me, a day of beautiful memories. Ever since I was a child, mom used to wake me up, early on this day, to go to church and thank God for the gift of life. We pro- cessed with candles, participated in the Eucharist, and gave thanks to God. That was the beginning of my Birthday since I was little. Then, we went home and had breakfast. Our birthdays were the only days on which we could have two eggs for breakfast! We have addressed God, the “source and origin of all light, who on this day showed to the just man Simeon the light

  • f revelation to the Gentiles,” asking that the candles which we are eager to carry in praise of your name may light
  • ur way as we tread the path of virtue, seeking to reach the light that never fails. May our hearing of the gospel and

the Eucharist make us ready to pray with Simeon, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word.” PASTOR’S NOTES

Welcome to Holy Grounds! The purpose of this group is to come together in coffee and conversation once a month to help us grow in our faith and holi-

  • ness. Holy Grounds will meet on the Third Friday of each month, beginning

THIS MONTH, on Friday, February 21st from 6:15—7:30 in Shea Hall. Each month the group will pick a topic and will read about, research, and prepare for conversation on that

  • topic. February’s Holy Grounds coffee and conversation topic will be on St. Mother Theresa.

Unlike a traditional book club, no one particular book will be identified. Simply start digging into the life of

  • St. Mother Theresa, take notes and bring your notes (and reference material if you like) with you to the

February 21st meeting. No need to register, just show up and plan on having a relaxing, inspiring time with your fellow parishioners discussing the life of St. Mother Theresa. If you would like more information about this newly forming group, please contact Jackie Wagner 865-376-3904. Mark your calendars:

Holy Grounds: February 21st at 6:15 PM - Shea Hall

  • ther sources. As the library grows, it may contain audio and video materials in addition to books.

Our new library is in it’s very beginning stages and we will keep you apprised of it’s progress here in the

  • bulletin. If you have any questions or would like more information about our new library, please contact

Joyce Welsh at 865-382-4706 or ltlgodzillasmama@gmail.com
