  12. 6 years since devastating Banjup fire of 3 February 2014 • 500 hectares • 60+ properties • Started around midnight by arsonist / car thief east of Taylor Road. • Largely extinguished by 9:00 am • Flared up 10:40 am • Burned thru Banjup by 5:00 pm • Flare ups in Atwell past midnight Banjup Residents Group 12 23 February 2020

  13. Residents know how to prepare their property outside • Keep fire breaks clear • Burn off fuel in cool months • Keep gutters clean • Clear 20+ metres around house • No naked flames in summer See “Fire Chat” – Think first, avoid accidents • Have a bush fire survival plan Share your Plan • Be prepared for evacuation with family & friends Banjup Residents Group 13 23 February 2020

  14. Have you considered preparing indoors for the worst? • Ensure phone registered addresses up to date • Fire safe for irreplaceables • Back up all computer data into the “Cloud” – Scan special family photos and copy into the “Cloud” • Copy all special DVDs – store at a relative’s house • Identify a “Safe Room” shelter – if caught unawares • Have overnight bags packed Banjup Residents Group 14 23 February 2020

  15. If you have to go, then … • Close all windows and doors (house and sheds) • Wear loose cotton clothes over arms and legs • Wear enclosed shoes • Turn off air-conditioners and gas cylinders • Take wallets, purses, phones, overnight bags. dogs, cats, pets • Place green bag over bin at gate • Leave front gate open Banjup Residents Group 15 23 February 2020

This example Survival Plan could be adapted for most in Banjup, Jandakot, and Treeby OUR TRIGGERS TO LEAVE ALTERNATIVELY, WE WILL GO TO: – Woolworths car park WILL BE: • 1. “Watch and Act” declared on Lyon Road Emergency web site VIA – Liddelow Road south 2. Phone warning messages – Gibbs Road west 3. Sirens nearby 4. Loss of electricity If you have any special needs, or WE WILL GO TO: large animals, or anything out of the – Bunnings car park ordinary, then your Trigger to Leave might be earlier than “Watch & Act” • Armadale Road VIA Stay informed at – Liddelow Road north https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au/# – Armadale Road west Banjup Residents Group 16 23 February 2020

  17. DFES backed off from “REALLY unreliable” telephone warning system post on Facebook • Telephone warning system is reliable – But don’t make it your only warning • Determine your own Survival Plan triggers • Maybe include Alert2Me - Bushfire and Emergency Alert on your smart phone • DFES recommends “Bushfire Ready Groups” of ~20 neighbours – facilitated by fire brigade – work together to prepare for and respond to bushfire – keep each other informed – support each other when a bushfire threatens Banjup Residents Group 17 23 February 2020

  18. Bushfire Ready Groups need on-going momentum to be effective • Local fire brigade will facilitate local planning • Once established, members must stay involved • Are we ready to commit for the long term? Banjup Residents Group 18 23 February 2020

  35.
