My Graffiti Wall Explanation Mrs. Rudder

My graffiti wall is meant to point out various scenes in the book FLUSH by Carl Hiaasen. These scenes depict bigger ideas beyond the entertaining story. The bigger ideas of exploitation are presented throughout the book, and Hiaasen has clearly pointed out that he is angry at this exploitation of nature in

  • Florida. Development and population growth has forced nature to take a “back seat.” There are hard

questions posed in regards to this as pointed out in my wall. Many scenes in this book force us to think about family and the relationships that we make throughout our lives. Family can be a conflict as well as a

  • support. But, I point out in my wall that there are decisions that must be made by a family and Hiaasen

shows us the many decisions that Noah’s family had to make in various situations. I added a quote from Shelly because she is one of my favorite characters. She obviously has a “love-hate” relationship with men, but this points out the stereotypes that sometimes our genders live up to. Shelly, however, is a character that Hiaasen would appreciate. He seems to portray a tolerance of the individuality of people and can understand how “men” can sometimes show their immature and less desirable sides to women. As stated in the upper right corner, respect is the most important concept presented in this novel, in my

  • pinion. Overall, my hashtag Live4Conservation goes beyond just conservation of the environment, but

also conservation of our integrity as human beings.

Graffiti Wall by Collins

Collins (Explanation of Graffiti Wall): My graffiti wall focuses mainly on family and the economy. Through the book FLUSH various points are made of how the economy is affected daily by us humans. Many times Carl Hiaasen has made remarks of how the economy is failing for example when he was talking about how Dusty poured sewage daily into the basin, When fishermen of the name of Derrick Mays was illegally net fishing, and when the Carmichaels were abusing their dogs.In this book family is a huge topic repeatedly discussed. Quotes that include family are, I didn’t tell my parents what happened because they would’ve freaked and gone straight to Dusty Muleman, or maybe even the police, which was not how I wanted to handle it, and “Mom,Abbey,Dad,and I all squished together. Family is a complicated subject in FLUSH in some chapters they hate each other but in others they love each other. In FLUSH my favorite character is Noah, being the main character he and I have the most in common. Noah is a brave kind young man who not only supports his family but also backs them up. My hashtag is #FAMILYFIRST Since I believe that in FLUSH and in life family comes first. Overall, FLUSH is an inspiring amazing book I’ve enjoyed reading this and hope to read more of Carl Hiaasen.

Claire’s Graffiti Wall

Claire’s explanation: My graffiti wall really shows my perspective on flush. I believe that this book was extremely powerful and influential to my beliefs and other readers beliefs on the environment. This book heavily influenced my perspective on nature and the environment and challenged my beliefs on how humans are affecting the planet. Before reading this book, I believed that what humans were doing was

  • k, sure there was some pollution and fishing, but overall it wasn’t doing significant damage. This book

completely transformed my perspective and made me realize that our responsibilities as people are crucial and can either have a positive or negative impact on other animals, plants, oceans, and or earth in

  • general. My wall is all about how carl hiaasen expresses his beliefs on overfishing, pollution, etc. It

dramatically changes readers perspectives on the world and makes the reader think to themself, “what am I doing for the environment and if it is negative how can I change my actions?” This is crucial to the power that humans have that is one of the causes of how our earth is gradually being destroyed. I thought flush was a fantastic book and it completely changed my perspective on life. In conclusion, I made my graffiti wall all about carl hiaasen’s novel flush and how it affects change in the environment. Overall, this was a great book and it had a huge impact on my perspective of the environment.

I wanted to emphasise the family portion of the book with my #FRIENDS AND FAMILY IS IMPORTANT. I felt like it was an overlooked part of the book so I tried to bring it out into the open. I also felt inspired that the dad was willing to give up everything just to fight for a cause and that is why I have the quote "I wasn't proud that my dad was sitting in jail, but I knew he was a good person. Even when he flies off the handle, at least he's fighting for something close to his heart." (Chapter 4, page 46) The last part I included is the pollution part of the book, probably one of the biggest topics in the book I really liked and thought should stop. That is why I chose the picture of two kids swimming near trash in the ocean, you can barely see one of the kids in the water.

AMELIA

My slide focuses on the three main themes in the novel Flush, conservation, greed, and family

  • relationships. In the Carl Hiaasen interview, he shows us how these themes are very prevalent in his own
  • life. Just like the Noah, he has a very “family first” attitude about life, because of his great affection and

love for both his family members and his home state of Florida. He is very angry when he hears about people doing horrible things to the environment, and he is a great activist for conservation and the

  • environment. He also hates that politicians care only for the money, and the voters that keep them in

power, and often don’t focus on the bigger picture, which is that money won’t matter when there are no more fish to protect, and no more wild spaces to love. I think that this is a very big issue that not many people bring up, and I am frankly just as disgusted as Carl Hiaasen at the greedy, selfish people who think

  • re of money than they do about the wellness of our planet.

Graffiti Wall by Lakshya

Lakshya’s Explanation: My slideshow shows important things in the book Flush. Some of the major aspects were family, the environment, and respect. My slideshow also talks about the way Noah’s dad and Carl Hiaasen are related. There was a lot of family tension in the book. Noah mom wanted to have a divorce with his dad who used to be in jail. Noah’s Mom also did not agree with how Noah’s dad handled things he saw as wrong. But there was a good side to family also. During the book there were moments were they had quality family times. For example during the end of the book, they were fishing when they saw the green flash and the whole family had a good time. The environment was a major aspect because the underwood family cared about the environment. Noah’s dad wanted to help the oceans so he sunk Dusty Muleman’s boat. The family also picked up trash left behind by the people who litter which is also helping the environment. The last major aspect of the book was respect. In the book it taught us to respect the environment and the oceans. I posted the picture of the loggerhead turtle to show that you should respect loggerheads and make sure the environment is clean for them. The big arrows connecting the quotes show that the quotes are similar. Carl Hiaasen feels that florida is not being developed the right way and conveys his perspective through Noah’s dad. They both care about the environment. My pictures down at the bottom of the slide show that we should save our oceans.

Graffiti Wall by Kirtan

Kirtans Explanation: My graffiti wall shows the feelings and perspectives that Carl Hiaasen put into the book “Flush.” The graffiti wall shows what Carl Hiaasen thinks of what is happening in the world and what he thinks about it. He wrote the book “flush” to give justice to the people who are causing the problems that is happening in real life. The characters in the book show determination and the need to do what's

  • right. This graffiti wall shows what Noah and his family did to help in the situation they were in, his dad

was in jail, Noah’s mom was thinking about a divorce, Dusty is dumping waste into the ocean where kids go swimming. Carl Hiaasen tried to show what he would want to do to the people who are like Dusty Muleman and is trampling the environment. He is also trying to show that we should protect every living thing, even if it is not human. He shows that by putting his perspective into Noah and he showed how much he cared about the environment and what we could do to help it. Noah, Abbey, and Shelly showed determination and the thought of doing what is right even though they new what the consequences would be if their plan failed. There was also the big idea of family relationships because it showed how much everyone in Noah’s family cared about each other and what they would do to help each other. The problem that carl Hiaasen is trying to show is that some people in the world are ignorant and they are very

  • selfish. Based on their actions, Carl Hiaasen shows what the plants and animals go through and how

normal people can help to save them. These are the things that the book “Flush” by Carl Hiaasen are showing that are on my graffiti wall.

Future Selfish

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Graffiti Wall by Caleb

What I really wanted to illustrate in my graffiti wall was the future because I feel all of this pollution was caused by greedy people not thinking ahead of time. They are acting selfishly and not taking a second to think, “pollution= bad”. This all ties into family values similar things can occur in families, as we see in

  • Flush. Paine was not thinking about how his decision to stay in jail would affect his other family member’s

emotions and their money. Several other family bonds are described throughout the book by Carl Hiaasen because of how close he is to his family he is,and in a way it inspires his writing. A lot of well-meaning bystanders don’t realize how they can help stop pollution, and use that as an excuse to stay a bystander. Another mindset of polluters is “if everyone is doing it, I might as well” and that is wrong. The prevention and stopping of pollution starts with you. Yes, it might cost money, yes, it might bring tough times, but is it worth making a few extra bucks to destroy 70% of our world and eventually the other 30%?

SLIDE 21

Graffiti Wall by Alexa

Alexa’s Explanation: My Graffiti wall was made to show what pollution is doing to the earth and how it is affecting it. Another reason was to show and tell everyone that we need to take care of the earth that we live on. People are focused on everything but on how in time everyone will get sick from pollution and that we are not doing much to fix it. Most people are only focused on how to build our economy and to do things to make the earth “better” but we are honestly just making it worse. People need to stop “trying” to make things “better” for the people because they are not, if they want to make things better they need to try to stop pollution by picking up trash and figure out a better way to do things that are not more efficient but safer for the people. The problem is the pollution is not only affecting humans but it is affecting sea life

  • too. People are polluting the ocean which is causing animals to choke and die. So everyone and

everything is affected because plants can’t grow and they die, people can get sick and die, and animals can eat plastic and choke and die. When plants die people get no more nutrients from them and when fish die people can’t eat those anymore and then the chain keeps going and everything dies out. When the begging dies out the chain reaction keeps spreading until everything dies out.

Sushmita’s Graffiti Wall

Sushmita’s Explanation: My Graffiti wall focuses on the environment how it is being polluted and about family relationships. Through the book Flush various points are made on how their is trash in the water and how exploitation is ruining the environment. The author doesn’t specifically mention about family relationships but you can see through his wording that he actually thinks it is a strong bond for life. For example in the book one of the quotes that caught my attention was“I didn’t tell my parents what happened because they would’ve freaked and gone straight to Dusty Muleman, or maybe even the police, which was not how I wanted to handle it.” This quote shows that Noah is making the right decision because he doesn’t want his family to make a bad decision and get influenced on it. Carl Hiaasen himself explains in an interview that he has tremendous affection for his grandkids. I did “ Keep calm and protect the environment as an inspiration to be responsible and take care of the environment. The main character Noah is a kind man who not only cares about the environment but also supports his family and I think Carl Hiaasen is portrayed through Noah and Noah’s dad Paine. Overall the book Flush is a big inspiration to protecting the environment and to support your family and I’ve really enjoyed reading this book and hope to read other inspirational books like this in the future.

Nick was here… Explanation: My Graffiti wall shows many ideas expressed in the book Flush. With the big idea of Ignorance it shows how people are ignorant to about things in the world like how our environment actually

  • is. In the book “World Without Fish” it said how people thought that nature was indestructible and that fish

would never run out. Also the quote from Grandpa Bobby shows how sometimes people will do anything they can do to do things that they believe is right. With Paine, it was sinking the boat, or prying off his ankle bracelet to go save Abbey. My quote was to show that most people will see a problem and will just stand the side and assume someone else will just fix it. Although very few, even too few people- like Carl Hiaasen- will anything they can to try to fix it. Also, the topic of family and how important it is to people is displayed in this book. They work together to solve their many problems in the book.

  • thers depict kids and adults helping to clean the beaches. I think that everyone truly has a choice,

especially with all of the resources that people have today, they have the choice to be a part of saving the environment, or destroying it. Some of the quotes also talk about the responsibilities people today have to help out, while others talk about how bad nature is right now.

Graffiti Wall by Chloe

Chloe’s explanation: In my slide I wanted to talk mainly about the fact that only a few care and respect the environment. These few who do are only a small amount compared to those who use their “power” as a human and strength over others to abuse the environment. Carl Hiaasen shows clearly in his book “Flush” that he cares a lot about the ocean and is one of those people who are trying to protect the environment, Hiaasen also cares a lot about family which most people do care about but need to care just the same about the environment too. Carl shows bravery when standing up to those who abuse the environment and he makes a point to the society that they are wrong when he published “Flush”. That’s what I tried to express in my slide. - Chloe
