2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER/ SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY
The Gospel today is from St. John. Following Jesus’ crucifixion the disciples were still uncertain of his message. They lost hope in fear and locked themselves in a room. Without entering through the door, Jesus appeared before them with a greeting of peace and a mission to spread the Good News. The disciple, Thomas, was not in the room. When he learned
Jesus appeared in a similar way when Thomas was with the
hands and side. Thomas knew immediately and that it was Jesus and believed in him.

Thomas’s human nature compelled him to want hard evidence Jesus who appeared to the disciples after his death was indeed the same Jesus who had been crucified. Thomas is given the
really risen Our faith is based on the witness of the Church that has preceded us, beginning with Thomas and the first disciples. Through Baptism we receive the same Holy Spirit that Jesus brought to the first disciples. We are among those who are “blessed” because we believe without having seen.
As a family, reflect on the message of “Divine Mercy” by learning how to pray the “Chaplet of Divine Mercy” and watching “The Face of Mercy”. End by reciting the “Act of Faith” found in Companion of Youth.
ACT OF FAITH: I firmly believe that there is one God, and that in this one God there are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This Son took
ascended into heaven, from there he will come to reward the just and true, and punish the wicked. I believe in all the Catholic Church believes because God has revealed these things to his Church.

Part of the mystery of Jesus’ Resurrection is that he appeared to his disciples not as a spirit but in bodily form. The bodily form was not one that the disciples recognized though. In today’s Gospel, Jesus seems to be free from physical constraints (e.g. he appears to the disciples despite the fact that the doors were locked). The resurrected Jesus had a physical presence, but the disciples couldn’t recognize Jesus unless he allowed them to. His resurrected body, nonetheless, showed the marks of his crucifixion.
