n The immune system is not functioning properly n One of the principle suspects in the etiology of autism n Subtle signs of immune dysregulation include chronic

constipation, moderate behavior problems, recurrent ear infections and sinusitis.

n There is mounting evidence that gut permeability can influence the risk of

developing ASD.

n There are MANY nutrient deficiencies seen in autism. n Micronutrient supplementation can be very helpful. n Data supporting supplementation of micronutrients is strongest for

carnitine, CO-Q10, Mg, B6, B12, D3.

n B12 (cobalamin), a low level of B12 can impede the body’s ability to remove

toxins.

n Limit Juice (Even 100% Juice) opt for whole fruit n Focus on the Following:

– USDA Certified Organic (avoid pesticides) – Non GMO Project Verified – Fermented Foods – Bone broths contain collagen, minerals, and other beneficial ingredients

n Consider food allergy and food sensitivity testing

Special Diets: Allergy Elimination and Feingold Diet

All children on the spectrum are unique and a diet that may work for one, may not be the perfect diet for another. Beth Beisel R.D.

33

n Allergy Elimination Diet: Eliminates common allergens- milk, wheat,

corn, eggs, soy, and chocolate. Adds them back one at a time, while assessing physical and behavioral changes.

n Feingold Diet: Eliminates artificial colors, flavors, synthetic sweeteners,

dyes, the preservatives BHA, BHT, TBHQ, and salicylates.

– Some children with impaired ability to detoxify may benefit from this diet. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15585776 – Most preservatives and dyes come from crude oil (Petroleum). – Salicylates occur naturally in some foods like apples, berries, oranges, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. The salicylates are broken down using detoxification pathways, and if these mechanisms are impaired, salicylates may cause irritability and hyperactivity. If following the Feingold principles, all salicylates are removed and then added back one at a time once the child has a favorable response.

Special Diets: Yeast Free Diet

All children on the spectrum are unique and a diet that may work for one, may not be the perfect diet for another. Beth Beisel R.D.

34

n Yeast Free Diet: Eliminates baked goods, sugar, and fermented foods,

and naturally moldy foods, and is usually implemented with the GF/CF AND Feingold diets, making it very difficult to follow.

– This diet is recommended if there aren’t enough benefits resulting from the first two diets. – If the child consumes too much sugar, or his/her immune system is weak, the yeast in the body can grow very fast. Sugar feeds yeast and it can ferment sugars into alcohol which can increase autistic behaviors. – This diet also promotes probiotics to help replace gut microflora and overtake the candida or yeast. Unfortunately, most probiotics in food are not allowed on this diet, so the probiotics need to be purchased as supplements. (Supplements should provide

  • ver one billion organisms to be effective.)

– Some natural yeast killers include oregano oil, garlic, olive leaf extract, caprylic acid (found in coconut oil and MCT oil,) and uva ursi, which is a plant aka bear-berry, which can be purchased as a supplement.

SLIDE 36

Special Diets: Specific Carbohydrate Diet All children on the

spectrum are unique and a diet that may work for one, may not be the perfect diet for another. Beth Beisel R.D.

36

n Specific Carbohydrate Diet: Eliminate microbes and other foods that

feed the microbes. Complex carbohydrates sit in the intestines and breed yeast and bacteria.

– The Specific Carbohydrate diet is for those clients who follow the GF/CF/yeast free diet but still have gut problems. Client must avoid complex carbs like grains, processed meat, soy products, cow’s milk, sugars and canned fruits and vegetables. – It is a progressive diet that starts out with a plan for about two weeks consisting of proteins and a limited selection of carbohydrates. – It allows most fresh fruits and vegetables, as long as they are peeled, seeded, and cooked, beans, unprocessed meats, fish and poultry, natural cheeses, olive and coconut oil, and honey. – Fermented goat’s milk yogurt is allowed on this diet and when mixed with honey is well tolerated, but must be started with a small amount and gradually increased.

n We Band Of Mothers: Autism, My Son, and the Specific Carbohydrate

Diet

– Judy Chinitz and Sidney Baker, M.D.

n Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet

n The books listed above contain directions on how to follow the diet as well as

  • recipes. According to Judy Chinitz, author of the first book written with her

child’s doctor, the renowned Sidney Baker, her son screamed in agony for hours, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t stop moving, bit and scratched himself until he bled, and had endless bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. After trying many diets and medical interventions, she tried this diet, which was developed for people with ulcerative colitis and other bowel diseases. She stated: it “saved our lives.”

slide-38
SLIDE 38

Special Diets: Low Oxalate Diet

Beth Beisel R.D.

38

n Low Oxalate Diet: Yeast overgrowth (often from antibiotic usage) can

lead to increased oxalate production. If mercury is present in the body, high levels of oxalates can slow its elimination.

– Oxalates and oxalic acid come from fungi, like candida, penicillium, and aspergillus, as well as normal human metabolism. They make the body extremely acidic. Foods high in oxalates include spinach, beets, chocolate, peanuts, wheat bran, tea, cashews, pecans, almonds, and berries. – There is a Facebook group called Trying Low Oxalates that has 27,000 members! – Informative Website: http://lowoxalate.info./
