My Child is an English Language

  • Learner. How can I help?
  • Read to your child in your home-language and talk about

what you read. Reading is reading . . . No matter what language! You are still building good literacy skills.

  • Listen to audiobooks together from the library and talk about

the characters and what happens in the story.

  • Go places and do things with your child.

The more you do and talk, the more background knowledge they will have.

Additional Ways You Can Help Your Child Be Ready

  • Read, go places and talk with your children this summer!
  • Talk about their fears and concerns. Listen to what they are

worried about and discuss ways to handle their fears.

  • Have a transportation plan and stick to it from DAY ONE.

Let your child know the plan in advance.

  • Help them to become more independent.
  • Talk about school and be excited! Your excitement will be

contagious.

  • Plan FUN activities that will help them be prepared for some
  • f the activities we will be doing in the classroom.

Some suggestions are included in the handouts.
