“Many studies show that young people cite their parents most frequently as the main influence in their occupational plans. No

Getting Parents Involved!

Parents play a vital role in helping their child decide how to map an education pathway that will best fit him/her.

How can you get involved?

Some points to consider when helping your child select a subject combination:

  • 1. Interest/Skills: Is he/she more of a science or language

person? Does he/she enjoy working with their hands to create things?

  • 2. Ability: What are his/her academic strengths and

weaknesses? Which subjects play up his/her strengths?

  • 3. Requirements: Is there a specific subject that he/she

must take if they wish to pursue a certain course for their post secondary education (e.g. take art to enter fashion design etc.)?

Suggested questions to discuss with your child:

  • What are your favourite school subjects, and why are they your

favourites?

  • Why do you think school is important?
  • What are the things that you are proud of?
  • What are the things that you would like to improve?
  • What are some of your “job” duties as a student?
  • What are some of your “job” duties as a member of your family?
  • What career would you like to have when you grow up?
  • What are some “job” duties that someone in this career would have?
  • What school subjects would help you in this career?
  • Name some other careers that you think you might like. Why might

you like them?
