Professional Presentation for Graduation Guidelines for Completion Congratulations on your graduation approval and the completion of required coursework for the M.Ed. degree in Special Education. The last step in the degree program is the completion of the “oral examination” required by the Graduate School. For the M.Ed. in Special Education, it is in the form of a professional presentation . The purpose of the M.Ed. Professional Presentation is to demonstrate your expertise in evidence-based practices for individuals with disabilities. East Stroudsburg University’s M.Ed. in Special Education enables candidates to work with individuals with exceptionalities in classroom, home, and/or community settings. The M.Ed. in Special Education is designed for the candidate who holds certification in Special Education and is seeking to enhance and improve upon their professional practice. The M.Ed. Professional Presentation for Graduation is in partial fulfillment of the M.Ed. degree that reflects the following BACB and CEC Standards: � BACB Standard 1.0: Responsible Conduct of Behavior Analysts Behavior analysts maintain the high standards of behavior of the profession. � BACB Standard 1.01: Reliance on Scientific Knowledge Behavior analysts rely on professionally derived knowledge based on science and behavior analysis when making scientific or professional judgments in human service provision, or when engaging in scholarly or professional endeavors. � BACB Standard 2.10: Documenting Professional Work and Research (a) Behavior analysts appropriately document their professional work in order to facilitate provision of services later by them or by other professionals, to ensure accountability, and to meet other requirements of organizations or the law. � CEC Initial Preparation Standard 1: Learner Development and Individual Learning Differences Beginning special education professionals understand how exceptionalities may interact with development and learning and use this knowledge to provide meaningful and challenging learning experiences for individuals with exceptionalities. o Key Element 1.1 o Key Element 1.2 � CEC Initial Preparation Standard 2: Learning Environments Beginning special education professionals create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments so that individuals with exceptionalities become active and effective learners and develop emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and self-determination. o Key Element 2.2 EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 2

  3. � CEC Initial Preparation Standard 5: Instructional Planning and Strategies Beginning special education professionals select, adapt, and use a repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to advance learning of individuals with exceptionalities. o Key Element 5.1 � CEC Initial Preparation Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice Beginning special education professionals use foundational knowledge of the field and their professional Ethical Principals and Practice Standards to inform special education practice, to engage in lifelong learning, and to advance the profession. o Key Element 6.1 o Key Element 6.2 � CEC Initial Preparation Standard 7: Collaboration Beginning special education professionals collaborate with families, other educators, related service providers, individuals with exceptionalities, and personnel from community agencies in culturally responsive ways to address the needs of individuals with exceptionalities across a range of learning experiences. o Key Element 7.1 Detailed descriptions of each Key Element can be found at: https://www.cec.sped.org/~/media/Files/Standards/Professional%20Preparation%20St andards/Initial%20Preparation%20Standards%20with%20Elaborations.pdf Intent to Graduate Application � The 'Intent to Graduate Application' is due February 15 th for May graduation � The 'Intent to Graduate Application' is due May 9 th for August graduation � The 'Intent to Graduate Application' is due September 15th for December graduation � ** If students are finishing classes in August , but are participating in the May graduation ceremony the application deadline is February 15 th Access the Graduate INTENT TO GRADUATE application online EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 3

  4. Guidelines for the M.Ed. Professional Presentation: 1. After filing an Application for Graduation with the Graduate School, send a Letter of Intent addressed to the Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation (Dr. Heather Garrison at hgarrison@esu.edu). This letter should state that you have completed all coursework and are ready to discuss and schedule the M.Ed. Professional Presentation. Your letter may be emailed or mailed to the University. The Letter of Intent deadline is February 24 th for May graduation and October 15 th for December graduation. 2. Prior to meeting with the Graduate Coordinator, begin formulating a presentation topic. Your topic should reflect a strong research base that will demonstrate your mastery and understanding of an evidence-based practice that you have implemented in the field or researched for future implementation . Bring the attached “Initial Meeting Form” completed and ready to discuss. 3. Prepare a 20 minute presentation with a 10 minute question & answer session with the faculty who are present. 4. After approval of your topic, contact the Department Secretary at 570-422-3558 to arrange a date and time to present. Presentations are scheduled for the 14 th week of the academic semester. 5. Continue developing your presentation. Feel free to contact faculty members for ideas, feedback, etc. Please keep in mind that you are not to “teach” in this presentation nor read from your notes or PPT slides. Refer to “Suggestions for Developing a Professional Presentation. ” 6. One week before your presentation date, send an electronic copy of your hand-out and a copy of your visual (PPT; Poster; etc.) and any other materials to the Graduate Coordinator for final approval . 7. On the evening of your M.Ed. Professional Presentation, please bring 3 copies of the approved hand-out for faculty to follow and take notes. 8.
