  9. Project Management Highlights • DOE IPR 28 Feb – 2 Mar at Fermilab; First full review of the project since July 2015 (Next slide summarizes DUNE recommendations) • Preparing for LBNC review at Fermilab, 23-25 Mar • itrack no longer used for DUNE recommendations; docdb #2750 • Three 2016 reviews generated 99 recommendations with 18 different responsible parties spread among 20 entities (working groups, task forces, project teams); 16 recommendations remain open (83 closed) • Received charge last week; 9 subgroups address various topics • CERN SPSC review, 4-5 April; responded to committee questions • Schedule review, obligations review (CR impact) • Working with FESS to identify shipping timeline (& cost estimate) for delivering first APA from UWM to CERN by early June • DUNE mgmt. and DOE FSO toured DAB Cold Electronics set-up, Lab 7 Photon Detector bar production facility, and PC4 35ton HV test, 23 Feb 9

  10. Project Management Highlights DUNE Review Recommendations, DOE IPR, 28 Feb-2 Mar Define minimal, quantifiable requirements that ProtoDUNE must achieve so that James, with Thomson DUNE will have successful LBNC, CD-2, and CD-3b reviews. Define a date for each of these sets of requirements to be achieved. Due Date: May 1, 2017. Use project management tools to manage the schedule, costs, and possible scope Macier reductions so as to achieve the ProtoDUNE requirements. The planning should extend beyond integration. Due Date: June 1, 2017. Develop a plan and budget with clearly defined objectives for operating ProtoDUNE James at CERN. Due Date: August 1, 2017. Assemble a task force to address photon detection in preparation for CD-2. Due Date: James May 1, 2017. Establish and document, with the DUNE Collaboration, the detector performance James requirements necessary to achieve the physics goals for CP violation, proton decay, and astrophysical neutrinos of the DUNE project for the TDR. Perform a comprehensive review of your bottom-up cost estimate (including CORE Macier costs) prior to the next OPA review. DOE should work with LBNF/DUNE and international partners to better define CD2 Carolan requirements for non-DOE contributions. 10

  11. Project Management Highlights • ProtoDUNE-SP Production Readiness Reviews (PRRs) in process • Review team includes QA manager, ES&H managers, Project Engineers, Project Managers, and other technical expertise as needed • 22 February, CPA @ Argonne • 15 March, PD at Indiana University • 28 March, CE Mechanical at BNL • 7 April, PD at CSU • 10 April, PD at FNAL • 13 April, APA at UW-PSL • 30 April, CE Electronics at BNL 11

  12. Far Detector • Data Transmission tests with 35m long cable were performed using the ProtoDUNE signal cable type and bit errors were observed even when the FPGA cable compensations was at maximum. - Looking for ways to modify the APA frame in order to allow the cables from the lower APA to be routed through the frame. - An alternate would be to use the larger gauge Gore cables but these are very expensive and difficult to handle. • Defining DUNE installation stay-clear spaces will require additional engineering support. • A 3.6m high Ross cage alternate is being considered where the 4m tall field cage crates would be mounted to the work platform connected to the cage roof. This could be more efficient than transporting the 200 FC units as slung loads. • An LBNF/DUNE Far Site CAD integration workshop was held in March to discuss integration and modeling tools. 12

  13. SPPD Design & Construction – Subsystem Reports APA • Winding of APA#1 frame (U plane in process); wire tensioning requirements • UK Frame #1 tube machining underway; wire winding machine commissioning Photon Detector • Dry run with dipped bar apparatus at Lab 6 last week • Resolving SiPM board and integration issues Cold Electronics • Testing underway of FE ASICs from vendor • Prototype flange mechanical assembly & boxes have been ordered CPA/FC/HV • CPA production material received • Strength testing of Field Cage FRP threaded rods/nuts performed 13

  14. SPPD On-Site – EHN1 • About 1/2 of the membrane insulation inside the SP cryostat structure is completed • Clean Room material procurement in progress • Cold Test Box design completed, material procurement to start • Grounding and electrical layout progressing (safety document nearly completed) • Procedures for integrated APA tests in Cold Box and test data read-out under development 14

  15. SPPD On-Site - Instrumentation • Beam Instrumentation • Progress reported on Tracking Fiber detectors (also possibly used for ToF), on Cherenkov counters and pLAPPD (test in LArIAT test beam started). Under study BI DAQ and data storage (CERN) • Cryo-Instrumentation • Vertical T-Gradient Monitors: two VTG Monitors are agreed to be installed, based on different designs developed at UHawaii and IFIC-Valencia. • Progress with internal Web Cam Monitors based on development from HV test installation in 35t. • External Instrumentation • Muon tagging paddles mechanical tests underway. Design of frame for (4) paddles - “CRT module” - in progress, holding structure for frames (new or existing rails) under discussion. Shipment to CERN of Paddles from D-Chooz experiment delayed (April). 15
