WHAT WAS 18TH CENTURY DEERFIELD LIKE?
¡ February 29, 1704
§ Pre-dawn attack by 200 to 250 Wôbanaki, Huron, and Mohawk Indians and close to fifty French troops § Most houses are burned or destroyed § Approximately 50% of the residents are killed or captured
WHAT HAPPENED AT DEERFIELD?
¡ Forty-one Deerfield residents and six raiders are killed in the attack ¡ One hundred men, women, and children are marched up to Canada
§ 80-89% survive the 300 mile trek § 60-62 captives returned to New England
§ Not all returned to Deerfield
§ Others stayed, married into Native tribes, became Catholic
¡ Physical, cultural, social dynamics change
§ Why?
