Pro&contra

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

Pro yagi

  • Low windload
  • No permission needed
  • Can grow slowly
  • Low loss feed lines possible
  • Nobody tried such an array

Pro dish

  • Many bands possible
  • Easy polarity rotation
  • Low losses on feedlines

2008 a „happy accident“

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • All started with a huge rotating assembly with ball bearing

from ebay!

  • In his former

life it was part of a T174 GDR backhoe

  • The new 16y

was just ready The rotating assembly with 1.6m diameter & about 500kg weight with lots of rust

2009 Foundation

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • After the location was fixed a BIG hole was needed
  • filled with 10t of concrete
  • Tnx to my neighbors with the heavy machinery,

so it took only a few hours

slide-5
SLIDE 5

2010 Puzzle

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • When the

concrete cured, the gear was disassembled and refurbished.

  • A real puzzle

for men

2010 the horizontal boom

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The hor.

Boom was delivered in 3 parts of 6m.

  • 75x70cm with

60mm welded steel tubes

  • From a local

flat conveyor manufacturer

slide-7
SLIDE 7

2011 Basic setup

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The rotating assembly was placed in position by a crane (agn

tnx to my neighbor) and adjusted to only 0.2° out of balance

  • After sandblasting and new grease even Astrid could

turn it!

slide-8
SLIDE 8

2011 Basic construction

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • To be open

to different solutions the height

  • f the hor.

Boom was planned with 5m.

  • The gears

are from a fertilizer spreader

slide-9
SLIDE 9

2011 Basic construction

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • One hor.

Boom is mounted

  • Some steel

tubes are

  • nly for

transport

  • Elevation

chain is also mounted

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The

crane again did a good job.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

2011 Basic construction

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • A lot of steel

tubes had to be welded

slide-13
SLIDE 13

2012 The vertical rotor

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The main gear wheel was made from stainless steel in an

apprentice workshop for 1kg of coffee. The 2nd gear wheel is held in a block which takes all the axial forces to relieve the next worm gear. The motor is from a cable winch for a jeep, 12V.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Basic construction

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • Very

important detail.

  • Enough teeth

must transmit the force.

Questions ?

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Till 2015 only FM Antennas

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • 8 FM

antennas were first user.

  • The old 16y

system was hit again by a storm.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

2015 Which antenna should be used

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The dimensions of the main frame were not variable
  • Max. 10m height
  • Width 18m
  • Many simulations with different boom length and number
  • f yagis showed that pre mast mounting with 128 yagi

was the optimum.

  • Longer yagi showed degration of pattern by support

structure

  • Even longer yagis with same stacking had lower G/T
slide-19
SLIDE 19

2015 Which antenna should be used

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • Next step to choose the design
  • Many different good designs are available
  • DJ9BV, DK7ZB, G0KSC, YU7EF, DG7YBN and more
  • The decision was easy, as I found only one design which

could combine all advantages

  • Low temperature / low internal losses
  • 200 Ohm at feedpoint
  • Excellent pattern
  • Uncritical at rain
  • Good boom length to mimimize waste material
  • Easy to built
slide-20
SLIDE 20

2015 Which antenna should be used

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • The DG7YBN 11el. Wide was the winner
  • SWR dry
  • SWR wet ybn

2016 Test setup

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • 4x11el. Wide test setup to verify gain & pattern
  • Test of the open feed lines
  • Hint : use for test a wide band transformer
slide-22
SLIDE 22

2016 Which antenna should be used

DL7APV 2018 Egmond EME conference

  • Alu feed lines at stacking of 1,09 x 1,2m were tested
  • It is not easy to bent 6x1mm Alu
  • So copper feed lines were used for the first 4bay
  • 4mm enameled copper wire was much easier to

bring into correct form

  • Losses are nearly same as 6mm alu
  • Not easy to fix the joints.
  • Soldering joints need mechanical support
  • Need an „adapter“ Cu – Al wheather proofed
  • Need more PTFE spacers
  • Has to be stretch when comes from spool
