Diversity Committee
- The Diversity Committee consisted of 16 members
during the 2017-18 school year.
- Expanded its purpose beyond the recruitment and
retention of minority staff members
- Instrumental in beginning the discussion that led to
the decision to begin Deep Equity work in D99.
Challenges in Hiring Diverse Staff
- 1. Decline in students studying education and post secondary
planning to go into education
- 2. Difficulty in passing the TAP test
- 3. Attacks by media and politicians
- 4. Economics – salaries compared to other fields
- 5. Promoting the importance of diversity in hiring decisions
Steps to take
- 1. Put our Diversity Initiative message on the District website
- 2. Get out to colleges and universities
- 3. Use Social Media
- 4. Examine our hiring practices
- 5. Attend Job Fairs
- 6. Get message out on state and national level

Get out to Colleges and Universities
- Contacted colleges and universities across the
state to share our Diversity Initiative and discuss hosting prospective teachers for
- bservation hours and student teaching.

students for observation and student teaching
- experiences. (81% increase over prior year)
Get out to College and Universities
- Offered to meet with education students at
various colleges and universities to indicate
- ur interest in hiring minority staff members.
- I presented our Diversity Initiative at North
Central College and Aurora University to their education majors.
Social Media
We created and manage a Twitter account : @D99Careers
Hiring Practices
- 1. Diversity mindset of our candidates
- Universal question for all candidates
- 2. Screening Process
- Start with Video Interviews instead of paper
screening
Hiring Practices
Universal question: Our growing diversity among our student population is both an asset and a challenge. One such challenge is the racial disparity in our student achievement data. We also see racial disparities in discipline referrals, suspensions, and the number of minority students in special education. What do you think causes the disparities in these areas?
Hiring Practices
Video Interviews: Video Interview We have candidates complete a video interview, and this is screened, and from there we start looking at the
- ther materials that they submit with their application
to decide who comes in for a live interview.
