NDIS Summary

Original estimates suggested the NDIS would cover 411,000 participants and cost $13.6 billion at

  • maturity. However the Productivity Commission now estimates that around 475,000 people with

disability will receive individualised support at a cost of around $22 billion per year. “Reasonable and necessary to live an ordinary life” This is NDIS 101. They look at what is reasonable and necessary for the individual including value for money. E.g. a quadriplegic would get more with a support worker than someone who needs some help with some housework or cooking. Informal supports: supports which are available from family and friends. NDIS: National Disability Insurance Scheme NDIA: National Disability Insurance Agency Participant: someone receiving support from the NDIS Plan: a document outlining the participant’s goals and how they can be achieved with specific

  • supports. It lasts for 12 months but can be reviewed if circumstances change or the participant

thinks it’s inadequate
