Commercial Fishing

  • Harvesters in Maritimes Region land

approximately $1.3 billion worth of landings per year, in recent years (just over 40% of Canadian total)

  • Lobster is the highest value fishery with over

$800 million in landings

  • Approximately 75 commercial species

harvested

  • Maritimes Region has just over 1/3 of the

country’s fishing licence holders

Creating MPAs in the Maritimes Region

  • High protection standards despite

intensive human use

  • What does this look like?

– High protection zone – Compatible activities “zoned-in” – High-impact activities prohibited

  • How is it achieved?

– Compile available information – Establish scientific basis for decision- making – Find “common ground” through rigorous multi-sector consultation processes

Benefits of Protection Standards

  • Having clear minimum protection standards for MPAs

in Canada would:

– Clarify what MPAs are and why they are being created – Reduce uncertainty and confusion surrounding the MPA establishment process, particularly for industry sectors – Speed up the MPA establishment process – Better align Canada’s MPA establishment processes with recognized best practice in protected area design – Maximize ecological benefits of MPAs
