  5. FW/FL Prevention & Reduction Dialogue is Important! Together we need: • To create innovative solutions to combat FW/FL • To redesign existing food chains • New ways to reduce/minimise loss & maximise the value of food we produce Because: • Both SA and EU are committed => SDGs [12.3 target] • Ethically => our food systems are not working properly • Economically => it cost a frightening amount of money

  6. SDG 12.3: By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

  7. Over 50% of EU food waste is generated at household level • 88 (± 14) million tonnes of food waste per year • Equivalent of 20% of all produced food in EU • 143 billion euros! • ~ 304 Mt CO2 eq ( 6% of total EU GHG emissions ) • 173 kilograms of food waste per person Source: FUSIONS project, 2016 (based on 2012 data)

  11. 1. Food waste prevention: integral part of Circular Economy Package

  12. 2. EU revised Waste Framework Directive New measures to prevent and reduce food waste New obligations for Member States to: • adopt and publish food waste prevention programmes describing actions to be taken at each stage in the food supply chain, to progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 • monitor and report regularly on food waste levels, based on common EU methodology (Delegated Act in progress)

  15. 5. EU guidelines: former food to feed • Facilitates the safe use of former foodstuffs as feed. • Clarifies the application of relevant EU rules on food, feed and waste. • Presents best practice examples. • Prevents unnecessary administrative burden.
