Our five priorities for action

DEVELOPING OUR AMBITION:

We will explore opportunities to build upon the strong public support for regulatory and legislative reform – which could be implemented at a local or regional level, or lobbied for nationally. We will look at particular on reducing harms linked to

  • where we drink
  • how we access alcohol
  • what information we are

provided to make informed choices.

“Restrictions should not be applied across the board to tackle alcohol

  • purchases. This will affect law-abiding people in an unfair way.”

#GMBigAlcoholConversation

SLIDE 29

Our five priorities for action

DEVELOPING OUR AMBITION:

We will work with businesses, communities and partners to develop a vision for an alternative drinking culture in Greater Manchester, where sensible alcohol use is normalised. We aim to:

  • incentivise responsible buying

and selling of alcohol, and

  • showcase new and existing
  • pportunities to socialise

around moderate and no alcohol use.

“It is normal for people in England ‘to get pissed’ and it’s in fact seen as weird if you don’t drink.”

#GMBigAlcoholConversation

SLIDE 30

Our five priorities for action

DEVELOPING OUR AMBITION:

We will look at how we can do more to change attitudes and behaviours in adults’ use of alcohol around children. We will also continue to establish

  • ur city-region as a leader in

preventing the harms caused by drinking alcohol in pregnancy.

“If children are taught earlier then there is less chance that they would abuse alcohol in the future. It isn’t enough to be just educated at school. It should be done at home too and through the television.”

#GMBigAlcoholConversation

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Our five priorities for action

DEVELOPING OUR AMBITION:

We will take forward the Greater Manchester Drug and Alcohol Strategy and its

  • verall aim of making it

everybody’s business to reduce alcohol harm. This includes collaborating across our services and neighbourhoods to join up our approaches to prevention, early help and supporting those who are most vulnerable.

“Services need to find new ways of engaging with regards to alcohol... People don’t need to be dependant for their consumption to affect their health”.

#GMBigAlcoholConversation

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Our five priorities for action

DEVELOPING OUR AMBITION:

We will create more

  • pportunities for

discussing alcohol harms in our lives and communities. This will aim in particular to change awareness, attitudes and behaviours among people who drink beyond recommended levels, but don’t consider themselves harmful drinkers.

“Higher earners, older people & highly qualified professions make up some

  • f the worst stats…I honestly believe the public don’t have a clear picture
  • f the risks of alcohol at the point in their lives when opinion is formed”
