COUNTY COUNCIL LOCAL COMMITTEE FOR BARROW Meeting date: 19 September 2014 From: Corporate Director – Health and Care Services B ARROW CQC I NSPECTIONS D URING J ULY AND A UGUST 2014 In the last 8 weeks, CQC have published 6 reports on the following Adult Social Care commissioned services in the Barrow local committee area: Combe House Barrow in Furness Date report issued: 21 st August 2014 Service Type: Residential Care Client Group: Accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, Dementia, Caring for adults over 65 yrs Service Status : Active Registered Provider : Combe House (Barrow) is run by Cumbria Care Registered Manager: Hazel Whiteoak Overview of the service : Combe House is a residential care home providing personal care and accommodation for up to 40 older persons, some of whom may have dementia. The home is on one level and divided into four separate units, each for ten people to live in. All units have a communal lounge/dining room and kitchenette area and sufficient bathing and toilet facilities for the people living there. The home is in a residential area of Walney Island, close to local bus routes and public amenities. CQC found inspected the following standards as part of a routine inspection. Reliacare Barrow in Furness Date report issued: 26 th July 2014 Service Type: Homecare Agency (Domiciliary Care) Client Group: Dementia, Mental health conditions, Personal care, Physical disabilities, Substance misuse problems, Caring for adults under 65 yrs, Caring for adults over 65 yrs Service Status : Active Registered Provider : Reliacare is run by Reliacare Ltd Registered Manager: Victoria Louise Gribbens Overview of the service : Reliacare is a domiciliary care agency that offers a range of services for people in their own homes. The service provides support with personal care and domestic tasks to help maintain independence for people living in the South Cumbria area. CQC inspected the following standards as part of a routine inspection. This is what they found: Treating people with respect and involving them in their care: Met this standard Providing care, treatment and support that meets people's needs: Met this standard Caring for people safely and protecting them from harm: Met this standard Staffing: Met this standard Quality and suitability of management: Met this standard Hollow Oak Nursing Home: Haverthwaite Date report issued: 2 nd July 2014 Service Type: Residential+ Nursing Client Group: Accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, Dementia, Diagnostic and screening procedures, Mental health conditions, Physical disabilities, Sensory impairments, Treatment of disease, disorder or injury, Caring for adults over 65 yrs Service Status: Active Registered Provider : Hollow Oak Nursing Home Limited is run by Hollow Oak Nursing Home Limited Registered Manager : Sue Callan Overview of the service Hollow Oak provides nursing care for up to 27 older people and is an established family business. The home is in a period house that has been adapted and extended, including two conservatories and a modern extension. The bedrooms in the home vary in size and layout and are individually decorated and retain many original features. There is car parking available and well kept lawned gardens to the side and rear with outdoor seating for the people living there.

This is what they found: Treating people with respect and involving them in their care: Met this standard Providing care, treatment and support that meets people's needs: Met this standard Caring for people safely and protecting them from harm: Met this standard Staffing: Met this standard Quality and suitability of management: Met this standard Swarthdale Nursing Home Ulverston Date report issued: 3 rd July 2014 Service Type: Residential+ Nursing Client Group: Accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, Dementia, Diagnostic and screening procedures, Treatment of disease, disorder or injury, Caring for adults over 65 yrs Service Status : Active Registered Provider : Swarthdale Nursing Home is run by Vishomil Limited Registered Manager : Mandy Nunley Overview of the service Swarthdale Nursing Home is one of two homes managed by Vishomil Limited. It is registered to provide accommodation for up to 43 people. It is located in a residential area of Ulverston in an old building adapted and extended for its current purpose. Most rooms are en suite. Accommodation is on two floors, with two lifts. There is car parking at the front of the building . CQC inspected the following standards as part of a routine inspection. Ostley House Barrow in Furness Date report issued: 17 th July 2014 Service Type: Residential Client Group: Accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, Sensory impairments, Caring for adults over 65 yrs Service Status : Active Registered Provider : Barrow and Districts Society for the Blind Limited Registered Manager : Helen Winward Overview of the service : Ostley House is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 44 people. Accommodation is mainly provided to older people and people who have a sensory impairment. The home is a period property which has been adapted and extended for its present use. CQC inspected the following standards as part of a routine inspection. This is what they found: Treating people with respect and involving them in their care: Met this standard Providing care, treatment and support that meets people's needs: Met this standard Caring for people safely and protecting them from harm: Met this standard Staffing: Met this standard Quality and suitability of management: Met this standard The Croft Nursing Home Date report issued: 18 th July 2014 Service Type: Nursing and Residential Client Group: Accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, Diagnostic and screening procedures, Learning disabilities, Physical disabilities, Treatment of disease, disorder or injury, Caring for adults under 65 yrs Service Status : Active Registered Provider : The Croft Nursing Home (Barrow) is run by Croft Care Trust Registered Manager: Collette Hibbert Overview of the service : The Croft Nursing Home provides personal and nursing care for up to 46 people with a physical or learning disability. The home is in its own grounds with easily accessible outdoor patio and garden areas. Accommodation is provided on the ground and first floor of the main building and there is a passenger lift to assist people to access the accommodation on the first floor of the home. There are also four bungalows in the village area of the home where people are able to live more independently. The home has a range of
