APN

Mission- enable investigations of changes in the Earth’s life support systems and their implications for sustainable development in the Asia- Pacific region. Contribute, from the science perspective, to the development of policy options for appropriate responses to global change that will also contribute to sustainable development.

ARCP and CAPaBLE Low Carbon Initiatives Framework Biodiversity and Ecosystem Framework Climate Adaptation Framework Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R ) Initiatives

GEOSS

Purpose- achieve comprehensive, coordinated and sustained observations of the Earth system, in order to improve monitoring of the state of the Earth, increase understanding of Earth processes, and enhance prediction of the behavior of the Earth system Addressing nine areas of critial importance to people and society Disaster Health Energy Climate Water Weather Ecosystem Agriculture Biodiversity

2013 call for proposal APN introduce 4 priority areas for funding.

  • 1. Water security (inland and ocean): in the face of extreme events; including

management, quantity, quality, etc.;

  • Developing an Operational Water Security Index and Its Application in Selected

Diverse Regions of Asia- ARCP2014-16NMY-Babel

Low Carbon Initiatives Framework

GEOSS - Improving management of energy resources APN has financial supported (460,000USD) 2 capacity development activities and 5 regional researches

  • 3 projects are addressing need of Improving management of energy

resources

  • 3 projects related to low carbon city policies (with direct involvement of

policy markers)

Proposed Future activities

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R ) Initiatives

The scoping meeting (June 2014) will aims;

  • To explore the most important topics under 3R agenda and its relation to energy for

the region,

  • Review works undertaken (particularly case studies)
  • Discuss needs and opportunities on research and capacity development activities

that will support APN’s developing countries to promote a science oriented 3R policy in relation to energy efficiency.

Under the 3R frameworks;

  • Promotion of the implementation of waste incinerator for power generation and waste to

energy (biogas, biofuel). What are the factors for enabling environment?

  • Creating enabling environment to promote 3R practice. How to enhance the capacity to

raise awareness on 3R? What are the incentives for 3R implementation? How can policy and regulation support the 3R implementation?

  • Social and environmental impact assessment of waste management scenario.
  • Partnerships and multi stakeholders’ involvement in 3R implementation.
  • Scaling up community-based 3R efforts.
