Healthcare providers, regardless of their beliefs, are "obliged to try to understand clearly the beliefs and the viewpoints of the patient," according to the ACP Ethics Manual, 6th Edition. Studies have found that the number of Americans who believe in religious miracles increased by 22% in the past two decades. We seek to provide compassionate care, and in our increasingly multicultural society, it is necessary to expand our knowledge and understanding of how miracles and rituals play an important part in the patients' perception of care.
