Metal Components Cutting and Forming Processes Low Volume

slide-10
SLIDE 10

What processes are used for creating sheet metal products CBM members do these processes

Low Volume For 2D components.

  • Punch press / turret press high speed punching op.
  • Alternative Laser cutting (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)

Can be programmed to cut any shape. No tools needed.

  • Or
  • Water Jet Cutting

A water jet cutter, is a tool capable of slicing into metal using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. There is no heat affected zone.

  • Press brake forming V raise folding ops.
  • Both ops use standard or low cost tooling.
  • Max length of components in UK 5 metres long.
  • Up to 5mm thick. 1 company in UK does 10mm

LATEST DEVELOPMENT

  • Bystronic are laser cutting 1mm thick cr4 mild steel at 22m/min on a 6kw Co2 laser

and at 45m/min on a 3kw fibre laser.

SLIDE 11

Press Brake and Folding Process

press brake, also known as a brake press, is a machine

tool for bending sheet and plate material, most commonly sheet metal. It forms predetermined bends by clamping the workpiece between a matching punch and die. CBM have members who do this process.

Examples of Metal forming in Construction

The Birmingham Selfridges store, designed by architects Future Systems, is covered in 15,000 spun aluminium discs. Since it opened in 2003, the Birmingham store has been named every year by industry magazine Retail Week as one of the 100 stores to visit in the world. The £193m Library of Birmingham towers over Centenary Square in the heart of the city with capacity to accommodate more than three million visitors a year,

slide-14
SLIDE 14

The design for the Library's exterior echoes the gasometers, tunnels, canals and viaducts which fuelled Birmingham's industrial growth. Featuring a series of interweaving circles of two different sizes, the

  • verlapping aluminium rings will extend across the

building from the first to the eighth floor. Each imposing piece will be formed of 5.4m diameter black rings, with silver circles of 1.8m diameter attached.

France’s most exiting new shopping complex When the city of Angers in southwest France was looking to build a major new shopping complex on its outskirts, the site chosen was ideal for a major contemporary aesthetic vision being stand-alone and highly visible from all directions. Designed by architects Antonio Virga in Paris with all the roof & Façade Panels made CBM Member Whiston Industries.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

350 sq metres were of complex double curvature panels were manufactured, shipped and fitted in less than 8 weeks.

  • Completed units of up to 4x 1.5 metres were manufactured in the

UK and following powder coating shipped directly to site for final assembly.

  • Units were tested for accuracy of manufacture (+/- 2mm) prior to leaving the UK.
  • Despite being the final pieces fitted in a 1.8km façade, they all

fitted first time with no rework or replacements necessary.

The Brownhills Colossus A 12m high stainless steel fabricated figure. Certainly an example of one of the largest figurative sculptures in the United Kingdom The sculpture was designed by John McKenna drawing upon extensive consultation with the local community of Brownhills. This colossal sculpture was made entirely by John McKenna and his assistants at his studio in Turnberry, Scotland. John does not believe in sub contracting out artwork made in his name. The Angel Of The North Due to its exposed location, the sculpture was built to withstand winds of over 100 mph (160 km/h). Thus, 600 tonnes of concrete were used to create foundations which anchor the sculpture to rock 70 feet (21 m) below. The sculpture was built at Hartlepool Steel Fabrications Ltd using weather resistant steel. It was made in three parts—with the body weighing 100 tonnes and two wings weighing 50 tonnes each.

Cold Rolled Section Automotive & Construction Members; Automotive; Aisin, Gestamp, Construction; Metsec, Hadley’s, Stewart Fraser, Grove

  • ROLL FORMING is a continuous metal forming process that transforms

coil, sheet or strips into shapes with a consistent cross section. The stock is fed through successive pairs of rolls, which progressively shape the material to obtain the desired profile. The metal thickness is not changed except for slight thinning at the bend radius.

  • BENEFITS
  • Finished components in one operation.
  • Consistent shapes and uniform cross sections straight or curved
  • Pre punching coil for holes can be incorporated.
  • Can create locking bead and seal retaining features.
  • Low Cost tooling for certain profiles.

Picture almost any iconic building - the Gherkin in London, the Burj al Arab tower in Dubai, and the Shard and it will be a steel

  • structure. But it's not only engineers building commercial buildings

that utilise the material. Increasingly, steel is used in the construction of residential homes more so overseas than UK.
