Background Info: GBCPA received $280,000 from LEAP Breakthrough Schools for the innovative and personalized approach to student learning. [Two years ago], the implementation of personalized learning (which the state refers to as Competency Based Learning) begun. Last year, the 7th graders and INT [math and science] II classes participated in this pilot. Math Curriculum: Geometry in Construction and Algebra 2 In Business Science Curriculum: PLTW Physics and engineering *PLTW Physics and engineering counts as dual credit for all freshman. Algebra 2 in Business will be dual credit for business next year. We counter the remedial instruction statistic by offering all 3 levels of transitional math in house and on level of dev reading and writing. As a result, only a small percentage of college freshman will require remediation. Other Courses Offered: R-Gen-a newly founded program at Ridgewood that emphasizes 21st century learning skills in addition to core content through personalized learning. This course helps students become college ready after high school.

Key Factors:
Competency education is a fundamental transformation of our education systems. Grading systems are designed to tell us whether a student knows something on the day of a test, but fail to tell us whether the student can actually put the knowledge to use. Five Part Definition ▫ Students advance upon (demonstrated) mastery. ▫ Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students. ▫ Assessment is meaningful and a positive learning experience for students. ▫ Students receive timely, differentiated, support based on their individual learning needs. ▫ Learning outcomes emphasize competencies that include application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions.
