Modern CBE/History

▫ In October of 2016, the CBExchange hosted more than 400 school

  • fficials.

▫ More than 600 institutions utilize CBE, and educational businesses like StraighterLine, Pearson, and Ellucion are heavily investing. ▫ The Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Act (PWR), signed into law in 2016, advocates for CBE in the State of Illinois so more students are prepared for their postsecondary plans

What is a Competency?

▫ Key feature is competency

  • A competency is a defined learning unit. It is a discrete set of knowledge, an attitude, a disposition, or

an ability. ▫ A unit of competency satisfies/supplants the credit hour or course as the basic measurement of student progress. ▫ The very feature that makes CBE so useful is what imperils it: the naming and assessing of encapsulated learning units.

  • Summation of courses does not equal credit hours. Building a group of courses did not result in an

integrated education.

  • This counting process resulted in what educator Robert Shireman calls, “inane counting exercises

involving meaningless phantan creatures.” ▫ With a ton of micro-credits and micro-courses, we neglect higher-order outcome.

Implementation at Brooks College Prep

Background Info: GBCPA received $280,000 from LEAP Breakthrough Schools for the innovative and personalized approach to student learning. [Two years ago], the implementation of personalized learning (which the state refers to as Competency Based Learning) begun. Last year, the 7th graders and INT [math and science] II classes participated in this pilot. This year, the Academic Center and Advanced Placement Classes will be implementing Competency Based Learning (personalized learning) in their education. Transition:

  • Students, although a bit skeptical in the beginning, became very open to the idea of CBE
  • Teachers held biweekly meetings after school in order to have a more effective implementation
  • Teachers and students alike enjoyed the personalized aspect of CBE

Present Time:

  • Students feel more in control of their own education, and have a better scholastic experience
  • Students are presented opportunities outside of the classroom and receive credit for their education
  • Students are exposed to various career paths, and better equipped for college

Implementation at Ridgewood High School

Math Curriculum: Geometry in Construction and Algebra 2 In Business Science Curriculum: PLTW Physics and engineering *PLTW Physics and engineering counts as dual credit for all freshman. Algebra 2 in Business will be dual credit for business next year. We counter the remedial instruction statistic by offering all 3 levels of transitional math in house and on level of dev reading and writing. As a result, only a small percentage of college freshman will require remediation. Other Courses Offered: R-Gen-a newly founded program at Ridgewood that emphasizes 21st century learning skills in addition to core content through personalized learning. This course helps students become college ready after high school.

New professionalism course: School Store (Students will be able to operate the school store while gaining business and management skills). Students in our manufacturing program earn NIMS certification

New Grading Policy: 20% of students’ grades are based on Professionalism into these categories: How well do I maintain attendance? How ready am I to learn? How well can I stay on task?

Competency-Based Education: A New Architecture for K-12 Schooling

Key Factors:

Competency education is a fundamental transformation of our education systems. Grading systems are designed to tell us whether a student knows something on the day of a test, but fail to tell us whether the student can actually put the knowledge to use. Five Part Definition ▫ Students advance upon (demonstrated) mastery. ▫ Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students. ▫ Assessment is meaningful and a positive learning experience for students. ▫ Students receive timely, differentiated, support based on their individual learning needs. ▫ Learning outcomes emphasize competencies that include application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions.

Implementation:

  • Utilized by non-traditional learners to allow for the pursuit of a degree/certification
  • Create a more equitable education for students throughout the State of Illinois, especially for

students in low to moderate income areas
