  • Dept. in 1985 after Whittier Narrows earthquake.
  • CERTs established in hundreds of communities worldwide.

  • Assist Law Enforcement Functions (e.g. Traffic Direction & Security)

  • Integrate Ops w/ other CERTs as directed

CERT MEMBERS’ DON’Ts

  • In General, CERT Members do not:
  • Control Traffic or Crowds (only manage)
  • Deal with unruly or aggressive Crowds
  • Use force or violence to manage Crowds
  • Have Legal Authority to restrict someone from entering an area (only warn)
  • Gerrish Township CERT Members’ do not:
  • Arrest people
  • Carry a weapon without special authorization
  • Self-deploy without special authorization
  • Get placed in situations that endanger their safety (e.g. smoke inhalation,

extreme temperatures (such as fires), hazardous materials, dangerous manhunts, etc.)
