Who We Are

 We regulate and promote the BC Turkey Industry  Primarily Lower Mainland Growers

 8 Farms on Vancouver Island  4 farms in the Interior  42 farms in the Lower Mainland

What We Produce

 We produce 26.6 million kgs of Turkey in BC

every Year

 We export 1.5 million kgs  We produce 14.5 million as whole bird for the

festive and banquet market

 We produce 10.6 million kgs for the further

processing industry

Industry Statistics

 Since 2006, our industry in BC has grown by 8%  There are 4 federal processing plants and 8

smaller provincial plants slathering turkey

 There are 546 growers nationally and they

produce 165 million kgs

 Our per capita consumption is fairly steady at

4.6 kgs

Production

 Turkeys are typically grown between 10 and 16

weeks of age before they’re slaughtered

 They will weight between 5 and 15 kgs

dependant on age and sex

 Hens are usually sold as a whole bird while

males (toms) are usually further processed as they produce more breast meat

On Farm Practices

 All of our farms’ Biosecurity and On Farm Food

Safety practices are audited every year

 Growers must maintain the standards set out in

the National On Farm Food Safety Program and the Provincial Biosecurity program

 Failure to maintain these standards can result in

the suspension or cancelation of a grower’s licence
