  • Audie

ience: nce: The college audience is large and diverse

– 2.9 million students – More under-represented groups than in any other educational setting*

  • Need

ed: There are high levels of inactivity

– 300,000 physically inactive 16 to 19 year old college students – Currently you are least likely to be active if you are studying at college – 49% of FE students are regularly active, compared to 61% in schools and 54% in HE** – Levels of activity drop off when students transition from school to colleges.

  • Track

ack Re Recor cord: Colleges have demonstrated they can deliver against

  • utcomes

– 3.5% increase in the participation rates at colleges with a CSM – Active Colleges has successfully reduced the participation gap between females, disabled and BAME groups

SLIDE 12

Creating a lifelong sporting habit

What is inactivity?

  • Inactivity means doing fewer than 30 moder

erate ate equival ivalent nt minutes of physical ical activi vity ty per week. What counts?

– Physical activity – Moderate or vigorous intensity activities – Bouts of 10 minutes or more

  • Around 1 in 5 FE students are inactive*

*Source: APS

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Creating a lifelong sporting habit

What is the behaviour change challenge?

  • Within inactivity there are three distinct behaviours:

– Doing nothing – no activity at all in the last 28 days – Not doing enough – some moderate activity, but less than 30 minutes – Missin sing the intens ensit ity – only light intensity activity in the last 28 days

  • Nearly 75% of inactive FE students are doing light intensity

activity only

Not doing enough, 11% Doing nothing, 15% Missing the intensity, 75%

slide-14
SLIDE 14

  • Certain demographic groups are more likely to be inactive:
  • Challenges we’ve seen in relation to inactivity:
  • Tackling Inactivity resources on Sport England website

Relevan ance gap Some have strong negative associations with activity

  • ften from past experience

and/or lack of social norms Perceptio ion gap Some people feel they’re active enough because they live busy lives/feel they’re always on the move Action-Inte tention tion gap Some people are interested in being active and recognise the benefits of doing so but variety of practical and emotional barriers hold them back

  • Sport England calculator will demonstrate size of inactive market:
  • What is the size of the under 19s population
  • what is gender split for under 19s
  • What is the % of disabled students
  • What is the size of the under 19s BAME population
  • College generated insight will also be considered
  • Joint bids to submit partnership agreement
