How does COVID-19 Spread?

From the CDC Website: “There is still a lot that is unknown about COVID-19 and how it spreads. Coronaviruses are thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Although the virus can survive for a short period on some surfaces, it is unlikely to be spread from domestic or international mail, products or packaging. However, it may be possible that people can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.”

How long does COVID-19 live on surfaces?

*Keep in mind, research is still being done on Coronavirus and this information is subject to

  • change. This information is based on most recent publications. It is important to note, the

amount of live virus decreases over time on surfaces.

Focus on High Touch Surfaces

When cleaning and disinfecting for COVID-19, focus on high touch surfaces. Identify the high touch points in your communities and develop a plan on disinfecting them. Frequency of disinfecting depends on usage.

Cleaning vs. Disinfecting

CLEANING Cleaning removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using soap (or detergent) and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection. DISINFECTING Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces or objects with the use of chemicals. Disinfecting should be done after a surface has been cleaned. Cleaning removes loose soils, preparing the surface or object to be disinfected. If a surface is not cleaned first, germs can hide under soils and reduce the efficacy of the disinfectant

Approved Disinfectants

When using a disinfectant, make sure it has been approved to be effective against the

The Importance

  • f Dwell Time

Always check the dwell time for the chemical you are using to disinfect. The “Kill Claim” on disinfectants is dependent on the dwell time. To check the dwell time for popular disinfectants, click on the link below: https://store.directsupply.com/Promot ions/disinfectant-kill-claims.html
