  • This is a busy year for you and your student! Before we reach

graduation in May there will be many reminders, updates, grade reports, academic status letters (what’s left before graduation), confirmations and communications sent out. We can’t reach you if we don’t have your correct contact info!

  • Do we have your updated contact information?
  • Complete it on the Sign-In Sheet.
  • Mailing Address?
  • Home and Cell Phone Contacts?
  • Email?
  • Do you have your Parent Access Log In and Password? Now is not

the time to let go! Be sure you are staying on top of your student’s grades and attendance!

  • Need your log-in and password? Visit the Main office.
  • You can email teachers directly
  • You can see absences and tardies by class
  • You can see updated grades at any time

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020 Planning and Preparation:

This is a busy year for you and your student! It is also a very busy time for the Counselors Office and teachers are ALWAYS busy! Remind students to be pro-active – think ahead – do not leave things until the very last minute.

“Who do I ask for what?”

  • Grades and attendance – “Will my child pass the class?” –

contact teachers directly.

  • Transcripts – use the www.gafutures.org website for nearly all

requests

  • Scholarships – newsletters are posted in counseling center and

available on the website.

  • SAT / ACT / accuplacer Registration – are handled at home.

We can offer computer usage during non-class time BUT ultimately you and your student are responsible for the actual registration.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Who do I ask for what?”

  • Twilight Program – Counselor or Mrs. Wilson
  • Verification of Enrollment (child support, SSI, military, etc)

– bring forms for completion to Ms. McNeill in school counseling center.

  • Letters of Recommendation – that depends; teacher or

counselor – please remember to provide a week’s notice and your brag sheet of accomplishments. We have provided you with a copy of a “Brag Sheet” tonight.

  • Birth Certificate / Social Security Card – Your senior will

need these items for their future plans. Be sure you have proper originals for their use.

  • Immunizations! – Students headed to college, a 2 year

school or the military will need their updated immunizations record. Remember that what we have on file is OLD – usually not updated later than 7th grade. You will want to see your health care provider or the Dept of Public Health for an updated Immunization Record.

Your senior should be very familiar with this site. It offers many tools for planning for their life after high school. They need to create an account with THEIR LOG IN AND PASSWORD! This will be critical for help during their senior year and after graduation.

  • Career Planning

– What skills do I have? What job is

right for me?

  • College Applications – One stop shopping for many
  • f Georgia’s public and private colleges.
  • Transcript Requests – the fastest and most efficient

way to get your transcript sent to colleges.

Where do I go from here?

Help us to help your student! Be sure you and your child are communicating! We want to be sure that your student is prepared for their future after graduation. Your seniors should have already completed Senior Survey #1 for their Counselor during advisement. We will ask them to complete an updated survey prior to graduation. We know that not every student is headed off to a 4-year college and there are other options for students. Do you know your child’s future plans?

  • College – 4 year
  • College/Tech School – 2 year
  • Military – recruiter contacts
  • Work –
  • “Undecided” shouldn’t mean “I don’t have a plan” …

Choosing Your College

  • Do Your Homework!
  • Does it offer my major?
  • Can I afford it?
  • Will it get me to my chosen career?
  • College Site Visits –
  • “Preview Days” – Campus Tours – Parent Weekends.
  • Take advantage of these opportunities to visit the campus.
  • Is it too big? Too small? Too far? Too close to home?
  • College Recruiters On Campus
  • Students sign up in the Counseling center to visit with

recruiters who are on campus.

  • With the teachers’ permission any student may miss class

to attend a session with a recruiter here at Jenkins.

  • Students are encouraged to DO THEIR HOMEWORK before

these visits too!

  • Applying to College
  • Applications can be submitted in several ways but

most colleges now only want electronic applications (through their website,gafutures.org

  • r

commonapp.org}.

  • Nearly all colleges charge some type of admission

fee (but some colleges will waive this fee at certain times of the year or for students who receive free or reduced lunch).

  • “Apply to College days” November 5th and 6th , 2020

at Jenkins –seniors who sign up will be required to apply to a minimum of 3 colleges/universities. Counselors will be available to assist. Students need to be prepared with a way to pay application fees (if applicable).

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020

September 27, 2019 & March 31, 2020 8:00am The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. As an aptitude test, the ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success. Students are provided with scores on each of these individual tests and three Career Exploration Score composites: Verbal Skills, Math Skills and Science and Technical Skills.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020

The ASVAB also provides you with career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors whether you choose to go to college, vocational school, or a military career. Taking the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP), does not

  • bligate you

to speak with a recruiter or enlist in the Armed Forces. Once the school receives results, an ASVAB CEP program representative will interpret my results and help you to understand how your skills, interests, and values will assist with planning for college and future in the world

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020 Transcripts

  • What is my GPA? – Look at the bottom
  • f the transcript.
  • How do I know my Class Rank? –

Look at the bottom of the transcript.

  • Will I be an Honor Graduate? –

Honor graduates require a 90.0 at the end of the 1st semester of their senior year. You can check your GPA in powerschool.

  • How do I request a transcript? –

We recommend students take advantage of www.gafutures.org for most requests (these are sent electronically and insure quick delivery). Otherwise the Guidance Office will need a signed request form. Students 18 and

  • ver can sign for themselves. Under 18 will

require a parent/guardian signature.

slide-20
SLIDE 20

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020

Class Rank / GPA / Honor Graduate

  • Class Rank is based solely on your complete GPA and the number of students in your grade level.
  • GPA’s change only when credit is awarded – the GPA currently showing will not change until the

end of 1st semester.

  • FINAL SELECTIONS: Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Honor Graduates, Superintendent Scholars, etc will

be made following the FIRST SEMESTER of your senior year.

  • HONOR GRADUATE: Only students who have attained an overall 90 cumulative average or above

(with no rounding up) will be considered for designation as honor graduates. These designees shall be determined after the first semester senior grades have been posted. Only graduating seniors who have earned a college preparatory or technology / career preparatory seal of endorsement may be designated as honor graduates and ranked accordingly. Any student who has transferred in more than five (5) units from a school that is not accredited by an approved state or regional accrediting agency (Policy JBC(4) Transferring Credits) may not be designated an honor graduate, salutatorian or valedictorian.

  • SUPERINTENDENT'S AWARD:

Any graduating senior who has, at the end of the first semester of the senior year, a 95 overall grade point average (with no rounding up), as determined by the computer-generated Class Rank Report, and no Conduct Grades of "U" throughout the high school years, will receive the Superintendent's Award.

  • There is no “rounding up”! A GPA of 89.95 WILL NOT QUALIFY for Honor Graduate status.

WHILE WE DO NOT SHARE RANKINGS, HONOR GRAD STATUS, ETC., IT IS COMMONLY DISCUSSED AMONG THE STUDENTS DUE TO THE INFORMATION BEING AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENTS ON THEIR TRANSCRIPTS.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

HVJ Cla lass of f 2020 Community Service

  • “Doing the MINIMUM” … SCCPSS requires that all students perform 20

hours of Community Service prior to their senior year.

  • Remember that true “COMMUNITY SERVICE” is a chance to share

your time and talent with others.

  • Many scholarship opportunities are looking for MORE THAN THE

“MINIMUM”!

  • Be sure you document your service hours (we only track the minimum

– you need to track all of it).

  • Seek out a leadership role – being a worker-bee is OK but to get

noticed for scholarships you must GO ABOVE AND BEYOND the minimum!

Senior Week Activities … The Home Stretch!

  • By this date, Seniors will have finished their coursework , grades are

finalized and they are anxious to get to the BIG EVENT! Unfortunately, there is still work to be done.

  • Graduation Practice – (May 12-14, 2020) Every practice is

MANDATORY! Students who work will need to clear their work schedule for this week.

Each practice is important. It’s not just “marching in and marching out”. We cover many, many last minute issues for each of our Seniors (Transcript requests, exit surveys, military commitment forms and much more.)

  • Senior T-Shirt – often the most highly anticipated event (after graduation
  • f course!)
  • Senior Breakfast – a last chance to let off a little energy and share one

more relaxed gathering with other members of the Class of 2020.

slide-41
SLIDE 41

Senior Week Activities … The Home Stretch

  • Graduation Tickets – This is when those highly sought tickets

to the graduation ceremony are distributed! How many? We never know until Senior Week! Historically students receive approximately 10 tickets each. Need more? Get on the list for any extras – no guarantee but still we will try!

  • Fines and Fees –

Remember that old soccer uniform you forgot to return in 9th grade? What about that library book that’s been riding around in the back of your Jeep for 2 years? Any outstanding fines and fees must be cleared before your student is allowed to receive their diploma. We can’t stop them from participating in the graduation ceremony BUT we can hold that diploma and final transcript until any outstanding fines or fees are cleared.
